I enjoyed Hyperion a lot, but for some reason could never get into Fall of Hyperion, so went no further.  Have to give it another try  someday.

The revelations at the end are astounding!
The philosophical conclusions it reaches about how an all-loving God could call Abraham to sacrifice his son is breathtaking!
There making Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion into a film you know. How the Hell you can condense the two into a single movie is beyond me. Though I'm a-praying the Judi Dench will play CEO Gladstone. And as long as it somehow involves John Hurt I'll be happy

You know, this reminds of a forum called Newspeak Dictioanry.
It was the first forum I ever joined. Ah, what fun it was. Hours of debate on politics, religion, philosophy et cetera.
'Till one user, called Mephistopheles was flamed by a use by the name of Carldiesturmer. He responded.
Enter months of insults and allegations of sexual deviancy as the Americans say.
The Moderator, Big Brother. Banned both users for a while. Naturally, they both cam,e back, and the resulting flamewar killed off the forum forever.
It was a crying shame really.
Anyway, the point is, PLEASE don't let that happen here!!!!!

Dredd: Brilliant. Loved the image of the huge Russian with his little pinky sticking out. And I say scone as in stone.

Red Seas: Loving it. Though am I the only one to link giant sprin-legged robot guy with Spring-heeled Jack. Now there's an urban legend if there ever was one!

Counts as one choice: As has already been said, best thing in the prog. The "Pick up the soap" line was hillarious.
I will now never be tempted to jopin one of those clubs!

Defoe:

Defoe has nice art. As for the script, I despair, I really do. This really is poor stuff. When this run started I thought it had turned a corner. I didn't enjoy it but I could see how it would appeal to those more attuned to the whole alternate history/horror genres. Now i can't see how it would appeal to nyone. Stilted dialogue, far too many characters and pacing that would make Heartbeat look like 24. Awful.

I couldn't put it any better myself. Defore just doesn't work for me.

Still can't wait for the new Stickleback!

The History of Modern China: 1850-2009.
My Dad bought it for me since I'm studying Mao's China at college.
Really didn't enjoy it a t first, but after making myself read a chapter a day of it for the past few weeks, have really gotten into it!
I'm at the mid 1970s at the moment. Chairman Mao, the 'Great Helmsman' has finally, finally,finally died!
Deng Xiaoping is slowly rising up through the Parties ranks again after being discredited and purged durring the cataclysmic Cultural Revolution.
I'm also not far off finishing Cities in Flight by James Blish.
As soon as I hve finished it, I'm going to start on Valis by Philip K. Dick.
When I finish the China book I intend to finish Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche.
And try and get hold of Endymion omnibus by Dan Simmons.
Anyone here read Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons?

Cradlegrave - the Main Event. I'm sure I wasn't the only Squaxx who was waiting for the last episode of this strip with some trepidation, especially after the ending of Dead Eyes. Let's face it, the build-up to this episode had been so well-written and intense, there was probably a 50/50 chance it would disappoint. And, at first, I did feel a little let-down. I felt it was a little rushed and I wanted more explanation of what had happened. Then I read it again and decided I was completely wrong. The writing and art were absolutely spot-on. I think the climax was perfectly paced and the ambiguity simply made things even more disturbing. I was also impressed and unsettled by the strangely upbeat tone of the last page... Who would think cradlegrave would have a happy(ish) ending? Cradlegrave isn't just the best stand-alone thrill for a long, long time - it's one of the finest British horror stories I've ever read. Thrill of the Year? Quite possibly - and much kudos to Tharg for running such an uncompromising story. A classic. Trade paperback (and movie!) soon, please.

(For what it's worth, my take on the story is that Mary's despair at her lost childhood and the decay of Ravenglade somwhow opened her to cosmic forces which mutated her body - although, ironically, the "mundane" horrors had reached such a point that the coming of Lovecraftian Chaos actually acted as a purging of human evil - in effect, she became a kind of inverted Mother Goddess, eating her corrupt young. Which is why she's so weirdly sympathetic.)

Despite the unquestionable brilliance of Cradlegrave, though, I have to admit that the story I'm simply flat-out enjoying the most at the moment is Defoe. For whatever reason, this story simply works for me, totally. The combination of twisted history (a period I'm genuinely fascinated by), black magic, weirdly credible steampunk technology (the Puckle gun was actually real, as were the round and square bullets) and full-on zombie action just hits the mark every time. Okay, I accept that the dialogue can be a bit clunky and expo-heavy but, for me, it still works in the context of the strip. The Clockpunks, the Verbiest, Defoe's sneering "Bit fantasmagoric, innit?" and his loss of faith all hit the mark and Leigh Gallagher's artwork is superb, the perfect match for Pat Mills' script. I think this is the best script Pat Mills has put his name to for a very, very long time - a really fine piece of British horror/SF. Once again, all i can say is: Trade paperbacks (and a movie) soon, please!

I agree with the notion of the Lovecraftian element, (though that is because I'm a HPL freak).

I really am trying to like Defoe. I like Steampunk. I like Alternative history. I like horror. I like magick (I insist on archaic spellings whenever possible. I even write Mao Tse Tung instead of Mao Zedong!). I like conspiracy theoris. But I just can't get on with it. Maybe I'll read through them again come the end of this Book. I hope I can get into it.

Just a thought, perhaps instead of deporting the mutants the Judges take to Thrid Reich extermination of them instead.
Perhaps Dredd goes on the Long Walk, and comes accross the equivalent of the gas chambers.

Flash-backs to English lit. and the compulsory reading of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Thankfully the other books on the syllabus were Brave New World and Romeo and Juliet, both of which I loved.

Are you kidding me? Day in the life is a terrific read!
Though, being a sci-fi nerd I prefered Brave New World. Along with 1984 naturally. Thats one of the reasons Savage has been a favourite of mine since he said 'Oranges and lemons say the bells of St Clemmens.'
And any way, if Marx was right (which he was) then the Communist state will eventually emerge naturally anyhow, without any need of bloodshed. Revolutions almost never result in what they intended.
Russian Revolution: Went from Lenin's wisdom (sought of) to Stalins insanity.
French Revolution: France ended up in just a bad state as it was under the King.
Mao's Revolution: Ended up as a dictatorship which brought about the Great Leap Forward/Famines and the Culutral Revolution.
English Civil War: Dictatorship under Cromwell as 'Lord Protector' which became a hereditary title, making the regime completly hypocritical.
Though that being said, the American Revolution did succeed in creating a working democracy.
Perhaps no one has all the answers (except for me )

I bought Dredd vs Death for 20 quid along with Rogue Trooper and Final Fantasy XII.
The Dredd game is my least favourite. Why? Because the bloody thing won't save! I've tried dozens of times. I press save. It says 'save succesful'. Next time I try and play it, no save file exists on the game and I have to start all over again.
I press the memory card icon, and it has the save file there, but it does not bare the name I entered like it has for EVERY OVER GAME I HAVE! Its just a string of numbers and letters!
It can't be a lack of memory ont he card because:
a) It would say
b) Over games that require more space than the Dredd game can save
Has this happend to anyone else?
