4 days to go and no thread?   :o

So yeah, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim out on Friday, anyone else retreating from the outside world to play in the land snowy lands of Skyrim? If my time on Oblivion's anything to go by, I may be some time.

I have been a pc shooter guy for many years but stalker and fallout 3 got me into shooty rpg's. This will be my first proper beards and blades rpg so I am looking forward to it.
Of course with 2 jobs and 3 kids under 5 it will be an exercise in frustration trying to find the hours and hours needed to do justice to it.

Do you have any experience of the series Lob? Which race should I pick, I like ranger/woodsman type chars.

Just Oblivion I've played, but certainly to death. The races don't really restrict what weapons you use, although they do give an advantage at the start e.g. More strength, better with swords n stuff, more agility, better with bows etc etc. I always went for a strong warrior type but it's the type of game where you increase your skills based on what you're doing, so unless they've introduced maximum levels for stuff in Skyrim for different races I imagine it's much the same. You can swap between melee/ranged/magic easily too so it's easy to be balanced. Still, if you prefer the shooty type, choose one with good agility and speed, can't remember which one's which but it'll probably be obvious when you're creating the character. If it's like Oblivion, you don't specialise right at the start either and you can always try out a few different ones before you get too deep into it.

Looks like it's a Bosmer you'd want, they start with higher archery.

Christ, I really cannot wait for this. I sank soooooo many hours into Oblivion, scoured the entire map of Tamriel, did almost all the sidequests, ahd property and loot stashed all over the place, and more enchanted swords than I knew what to do with.

By the end I was so fucking doublehard, I could smite anything and everyone into atoms with my lovely Daedric armour and array of spells.

My biggest challenge was coming up with cool names for my spells and weapons. I found I defaulted to 14 year old Dungeons & Dragons player, such was the paucity of my imagination

Flaming Enchated Sword? you shall be.........LAVASPITE!

I'm sure I had a Stormbringer (soul stealing one of course) and other made up stuff of a more amusing than plagiaristic variety. Now I need to switch it on and find out, if the PS3 will work. Getting Skyrim for PC, but wouldn't mind seeing what the console ones are like. All the demos have been 360 I think so it bodes well for that. Several discs though? Not sure but got the space to install it.

PS3 has black screen of death...  :'(

Had a what was supposed to be a quick go in the early hours this morning when Steam finally allowed me to play.  Only just got past the tutorial bit which took far longer than it should've because I was massively overburdened by the armour and weapons I looted (well I couldn't just leave it lying around for anyone to steal!) and was limping along at a snails pace.
On the plus side it meant my helpful guide ran ahead of me and dealt with any early enemies well before I got into combat range.

The good side: Looks purdy and plays like every other elder scrolls game so you know exactly what you're getiing.  Nice voice acting so far.  Like the lighting effect that give minor light blindness/darkness as you look from bright to dark areas and vice versa.  ore realistic than lens flare.
On the down side I need to fiddle about with the FOV.  The melee combat still doesn't feel as it could, there's no real sensation of weapons impacting enemies.  And the PC menu screens don't have mouse control (except the options menus) but you get used to it.

So far so good then.  Now to pawn my stuff and go looting and murdering or saving the world as it's known in more polite circles.

Well this is fun and all, but it definitely feels like a regression from Dark Souls.
