Help! / Firefox vs Yahoo
01 September, 2008, 11:17:28 AM
Ello folks, I'm hoping you can help me out with a random tic my pc has developed.
I've been doing my browsing with firefox for quite a while and e-mailing work-related people with yahoo for longer. Just recently though, every time I click on my inbox, firefox encouters a problem and needs to close. I've cleaned my system top to bottom and got rid of everything I don't need, cleared the offending mailbox out (using IE) and scanned everything to buggery, but it's still happening.
Anyone had the same prob or know what the heck to do about it?

Help! / dtp software?
02 December, 2007, 10:51:48 AM
Here's hoping you guys can help me sort out a bit of xmas!
Booga's after a Silent Hill walkthrough for xmas. I don't think he minds which but I've had no luck in finding any of them. So I'm going to make one. I've found lots of sources for each game and even a very nice font, but as yet I have no way of putting it all together. Can anyone recommend a bit of dtp software for the job? I'd prefer free stuff as I don't yet know how much printing and binding will cost. 30 day trials or such are fine too as I don't think I'm likely to use it again. Also, I haven't done anything like this since college, so something straightforward would be lovely!

Of course, better ideas are also welcome!

General / Calling all artists (again!)
10 October, 2007, 10:25:26 AM
Shamelessly and hopefully reposted for those without Myspack and Arsebook...

Calling all pros, amateurs and anyone who fancies having a go!

In short, I need some artwork doing for a series of posters, flyers and other assorted promotional things to do with my various rock nights. Reply if you're interested and I'll send you the full details. Goes without saying, but small-press rules apply. however, if someone awesome wants to take on the whole 'branding' project, I'm sure something better can be arranged.

Also, how would I go about arranging to use an existing bit of art fairly and legally? Do artists hold their own copyright, or is that a publisher thing?

Cheers all x

Help! / Quick techie Q...
09 February, 2007, 07:23:16 PM
Hey guys. Just on the off chance one of you can help.
I'm having trouble with a RAR file of a TV prog. I've managed to find something to unpack it with, the picture quality is excellent, but I don't seem to have any sound. The thing turned up in about 50 installments and I'm wondering if the soundtrack is 'packed seperately' or something? Or do I just have a duff file? Once unpacked, the files are plain old wma's.
Any ideas?

Off Topic / TUNE!
07 August, 2006, 07:35:35 PM
I was just perusing the awesome 'blow your cred' thread and thought it's about time we had a new 'what are you listening to?' type-thread-thing to go with it. So here it is. Put all your recommedations, favourite tunes, new bands, stuff we might have forgotten about and general musical queries here for some off topic entertainment.

Right then. Everyone should 'ave a listen to...
Eagles of Death Metal - Death by Sexy
Simian - We Are Your Friends
Wolfmother - Wolfmother

Let us rock. Or do the 'big fish, little fish' dance. Or gaze at our shoes... oh, you get the idea!

Off Topic / Can you help save Eric?
13 July, 2006, 08:27:40 PM
Greetings board.
First off, this *may* only be visible to you MySpazzers, but please do have a look-see.

Below is a link to the adventures of Eric the Happy Stormtrooper, a quality little web comic I stumbled on a few weeks back. However, it seems emporer Lucas has got wind of it and is now trying to take Eric's creator to court over copyright infringement or somesuch. Hopefully, as Eric bears little resemblance to your actual Stormtrooper, all will be well but this has got me upset. Like the Lucas monster actually needs the cash! Anyways, if anyone knows much about these kind of legal issues please let me know, or message the man direct from here. This strip's the nicest bit of fan-fic I've seen in a long while and I'm really hoping there's a way to keep it going.
Help me 2kAD boarders, you're my only hope... sort of.

Off Topic / Look at me! I'm back!

Hello board, how are we all?!
As Planet Tanky enters a new age of peace, quiet and five minutes with nothing to do, I thought I'd pop back for a nosey...

So, what did I miss? Who's been where, done what, gone off on one, accomplished superhuman feats etc? What's the goss?

A special HELLO! to all new people who weren't here when I went off for a study break.

In attempt to stay vaguely on topic, Leatherjack = ace and Red Seas = WOOHOO!!!! It seems to be still unclear as to whether Rogue Trooper has a willy. (see, I have at least been keeping up with my comics!)

Hugs all round!

Hey board!

All's been well hectic here on Planet Tanky for a while, so i've not been around much anyway, but due to loads of stuff going on, i'm going to take a break and give up the board (and mucking about on the net in general) for a bit.
Mainly it's cos I have stacks of coursework and an exam in october which i'm well behind in studying for. I'm also doing lots of extra hours at work, which'll be even more hectic once all this late license malarkey comes in :/ On top of that, I seem to have fallen back into my old punk rock ways and have a new band on the horizon. And i guess i should sleep occasionally too!

Anyhoo, BIG apologies to LMS and Byron, cos i really don't think i'll have chance to do any small press stuff for a while. I'll still be reading all the mail from the EiN newsgroup and hopefully i can be back on board for issue 3 (if that's cool?) It looks like i'll once again have to miss dreddcon, being pre exam n all that, but you're all hereby requested to have a large spirit of your choice for me!

I guess i should really finish on some shout outs...(cue Sublime-esque reggae soundtrack...)

Luv, hugs and peaceful fun times to Bou, hope you get some quality happy time x

monkeys in hats to all the off topic crew - keep it surreal guys! :) And speaking of monkeys, Trouty - you can have the flying ones from the last board war - they might come in handy :)

OI OI! to the board punx! Someone drop me a line if this band thing ever happens, ok? x

Big thanks to Byron and Dudley for their services to homework and going above and beyond the call of duty!

More big thanks and hugs to Noisy for constantly sorting out my techie nightmares!

/[backslash] for Jared, rocks for Tweak, pirates for Mr C and more hugs for everyone! Some of you i'll see on MSN or somesuch, everyone else, have a wicked summer and a wicked dreddcon.

Byeeeeeeeeee!

for now ;)

Help! / cd burners
21 July, 2005, 11:10:44 PM
Hey all. Anyone up for an off topic speed challenge?

I need to find a 'download for free' cd burner that will let me make ONE LOUSY CD in the next 90minutes. After that - what's a good cheap one i can beg, borrow, or buy if absolutely necessary?

You all rock, in advance, Tanky x

Off Topic / The Tourist Trap
24 June, 2005, 06:39:01 PM
OK board, here's a bit of off-topic silliness for a Friday afternoon...

Tanky is skint. My hometown (Bloody Portsmouth) is currently under seige from hundreds of boats (some are VERY cool, it has to be said)and thousands and thousands of tourists, who are probably gonna be around for about a week.

So. What i'm after is all your best scams, money making schemes, and ways to generally fleece tourists out of their money. I have at my disposal two housemates, and possibly a press-ganged boyfriend.

To get the ball rolling, the best one so far involves me and my dumb housemates dressing up as pirates, writing a bunch of rude sea shanties and going simultaneously busking and drinking.

So it's over to you. Anything goes, and the best suggestion may be enacted next week and posted for your viewing pleasure - but remember - we really don't want to hurt anyone and would rather avoid getting nicked!

Off Topic / Apologies! Any literary types about?
08 April, 2005, 11:31:37 PM
Hey all.

Sorry to do this to you all on a friday afternoon, but i'm having an educational crisis!

Basically, i have an overdue essay to write and so far out of about 20 pages of notes, i don't seem to have anything to work with, unless i'm being a dumbass, which is likely. So, i was just wondering if any of you lovely people can, or would like to help. There's a pint at the next convention and my undying gratitude in it for ya's!

I have to explain, in a crap load of words, why 'Frankenstein' is considered a gothic novel and 'Great Expectations' is considered a realist one.

Oh wondrous all knowing board, only you can save what remains of my brain - over to you!

No need to keep this thread going if you don't want, just a quick post to say a big thankyou to those of you who sent me an e-card this morning. I'll not embarrass by naming names, but it was very sweet and you've cheered up my day!

Bless ya's!

Another off-topic offering, but i think there's a few fans here...

On another thread a while back, a lovely boarder (i forget who - sorry) drew attention to the impending reunion shows by 90's grebo mad bastards Pop Will Eat Itself. Well as a direct result,me, housemate #1, an armchair anarchist and an unspecified other have scored tickets to the show on 25th Jan at Shepherds Bush Empire.
So is anyone else going? Fancy meeting up for a bevvie and a good ol' fashioned bouncy mosh like the indie kids used to make?

Off Topic / In defence of the off topic thread
30 December, 2004, 04:43:48 PM
Hey all.
I realise that this could have gone on Noisy's latest, but not wanting to drag yet another thread off topic i thought it best to start my own.

With the departure of Logan, it seems many of us are getting a little bored with the board and quite rightly demanding more on-topic threads. Firstly i'd like to explain why i for one usually find that pretty difficult.

As has already been mentioned elsewhere, non-subbers like me are usually too late to add anything to the new prog reviews. Frankly by thursdays, there's nothing left to say, and no-one wants to read the same opinions over and over, right? (and before anyone points out the irony there, i'll move right along).

I'm perhaps not your typical boarder. I've been reading since 1013, I can never remember who drew/ wrote what, unless it completely grabs me, and i originally came here out of curiosity shortly after getting my first home pc. I quickly realised i was completely out of my depth when it came to joining in most comic related discussions (many thanks here to all who've answered one or more of my stupid questions) but it's thanks to all the silly games we play here, like monkey in a hat, my little pony and Q+A that i felt included and have since met some Really Nice People and decided to stick around. Next year, i'm even going to at least one con.

One more idea that just occurred to me is that an off topic thread can be seen as a sign of a healthy online community. After all, you wouldn't want to share personal problems, new born babies, great news and bad with a bunch of people you felt uncomfortable with.

I'd like to draw your attention now to this year's boarder awards 'best message thread' nominations (I never get the links right, but it can't be far away!) At time of posting, the 'off topic' and 'vaguely related silliness' type threads are outnumbering the on topic ones. If this is because you've not voted then do so. That says to me that this place would be very different without our friend 'the off topic thread' and not nearly as much fun.

A message board by definition is only as good as the people who visit and the content of our posts.
All of us make this board what it is. So if there's something you don't like, what's stopping you changing things? Start a thread that does interest you. I bet you won't be the only one.

Cheers.

Help! / slightly 'iffy' tekkie question
03 November, 2004, 11:39:31 PM
Hey all. Need some tekkie help (again) and i'm not sure who else to ask as the fella that recommended i try this has naffed off on holiday.
Unfortunately, i suspect what i'm trying to do may be 'a bit naughty' so apologies if i'm a little vague.

I've downloaded a 30day trial of a piece of software, and 'apparently' you can also download keys which allow you to turn trial versions into full versions. I think i've managed to get one, but i need to know, am i likely to damage anything on my pc, how can i be sure its the right one and how i get this key thing to work?
Alternatively, is it likely that the same file sharer will have the full version of the software in question and is that likely to be damaging/ dodgy as well?

any help or ideas (that don't involve actually buying expensive stuff!) appreciated
cheers!
