31. ALEC SHAW
PLAY TILL YOU DROP!

Appearing in the infamous Action comic that ran for only 36 issues in 1976 before being dubbed the "sevenpenny nightmare" and withdrawn because of its dark and violent stories, Shaw's tale involved the seamier side of football. A striker for first division Rampton City, Shaw was blackmailed by Vernon Grice, a reporter for the Daily Comet, over pictures of his father taking a bribe. After twists and turns involving a car's brakes being doctored and a shooting, Shaw's father was cleared. Our hero went on to score a hat-trick to seal the championship for City as well as scooping ?5,000 as the league's top scorer.
