Title: Loose ends
Post by: 2000AD Online on 11 December, 2002, 07:40:35 AM
Im in the middle of a rereading frenzy - starting with the digital archives, then on from prog 900 to the present and I`ve been noticing loose ends in Dredd`s stories.  For example:
- Judge Ekhart, who was turned into a monster and decaptitated by Dredd. His head was last seen murmuring `alive` in a to be continued kind of way
- Judge Death is wandering the Cursed Earth
- there is a vampire in the Undercity, terrorising the troggies
I don`t expect 2000 AD to clear them all up and I don`t expect anyone to have a complete list, but I`m interested.  Has anyone else noticed any conspicuous loose ends?  What`s the most interesting one?

cheers,

yours freezing in Japan

Floyd

The Terror from the East, that was foretold. That was still in Judge McGruder's time. Was that ever sorted out?

There was that other Alan Grant one with the man who flew off at the end.  The crystal skull one was probably memorable enough, but can't remember the other one (some thought should have been put in to scheduling of follow ups)

Which crystal skull guy was this then?  I don't remember this, what was the general story?

Also for loose ends, I think there was a story back in the days of the annuals, set in a Cursed Earth research lab.  There was two mutants, one woman who could move her hair in an extra appendage style way, and one guy with glowing eyes and a lot of psychic (?) type power.  Last thing I remember was her biting the bullet and him floating off into the distance looking all menacing like.  Anyone else remember this (or how it actually went?

Crystal skull guy (possibly) in "First Blood" 1277.

The other thing was "Fog Devils Of The Cursed Earth" IIRC in the 82 and/83 Dredd annuals(?). That one where the baddie's name is Essenby, and he's really an android called SNB.

There's First Blood from 1277 (crystal skull guy) which featured a character that ended up kicking Dredd's arse and running away.  Then the next prog was Unnatural Selection with another guy who seemed to be after Dredd.  I heard a rumour that the Crystal Skull guy leads into a forthcoming Dredd epic by Alan Grant but that could be bollocks.

'Terror from the East - hondo cit in the mega city 2 site maybe?'

Nope - it was supposed to be Sino-Cit, but the planned epic was scrapped. I'm working this plotline into the Judge Dredd RPG - elements have appeared in the core rulebook.

We also have the Stani-States (Afgani-, Kurdi-, etc), which are a hotspot of trouble, following the JD strip's vague trend towards drawing parallels to real life topics, just as the Apoc War drew on the Cold War, taking it to the Nth degree.

FAO Floyd,

Floyd, are you reasonably fluent in Japanese? I ask because I may be writing a Hondo City sourcebook for the JDRPG next year, and it would really help me to have a linquistics expert on retainer :)

IIRC, Judge Eckhart was featured in Crusade, a Grant Morrison/ Garth Ennis effort, and as such is unlikely to reappear in a Wagner strip.

That's if his reputation for ignoring other people's continuity is correct.

I really hate to even type these words after the fiasco, but did you actually receive and get to read the 'digital archives'?(shudder)
Were they ok?I thought the whole idea had been scrapped, hence the refund and apologies from rebellion

JC,

My Japanese is functional and improving.  My wife's Japanese is pretty much perfect, since she's been working on it for 37 years!  Consider me retained!

Cheers,

SNB- the Synthetic Non Being.  Yeah, I loved that- the original "fog Devils" was the first story I ever drew a strip to.  It was crap of course- but I was only twelve...

Wonder where it is now?

Like a scratched record I'll hammer on with this loose end...Nero Narcos. I reckon his brain is inside his old robo butler who just so happens to be serving Judge Edgar, who just happens to be in charge of the same penal colony that the Chief Judges Man is serving in. I don't know about you guys but i never bought Narcos never having a backup plan and just chucking it all in to have a one on one scrap with Dredd.

Im sure Matt Smith mentioned this at the of his talk at Dreddcon, saying something along the lines of The Cheif judges man will be reappearing next year......  I got the impression that some of the loose ends will be tied up.

Maybe all of them in a super-villian kind of way.  Like Helter-Skelter except (yes it's possible) even more OTT and hammed up.

If the Angel Gang fell in the lava and came out alive... then so did the Mutant. I was expecting him in that full length story 'In the Year 20thingy'(I don't own it curses so I only read it the once... isn't it his death scream or something?) Similarly, does Dredd still have a huge eagle burned into his chest or did he do an Alpha and mystically untattoo himself?

And what about Judge Albert Sherman? He's surely a frightening bastard by now. He should get together with PJ Maybe for an attack of the evil geniuses...

Hammerstein's knocking around somewhere too and he's the only person who could fight Dredd repeatedly and live.

Hmmm... who wants the Judge Dredd Revenge Squad?

does Dredd still have a huge eagle burned into his chest

After his Necropolis/The Dead Man scars I'd doubt you'd still be able to tell that he has a eagle mark on his chest...

It was huge! Plus it was pretty recent compared to the Dead Man. It took off both his nipples as I remember (badly).

Rogue Trooper has no nads. Judge Dredd has no nipples. What is Johnny Alpha missing?

I still think Judge Castillo and the other Judges who were replicated in the Lawcom story can be brought back. I think that they were not killed when they were put in that goo. If Anderson can survive three years in Boing(r), and the Angels can be healed after being shot and taking a lava bath, then Castillo and co can be brought back...

Um, well he does have that whole mutant blank eye  no-pupil thing...
