Film Discussion / Re: Dredd (2012)

I'm not sure if it's fair to count distribution but that and marketing apparently cost $80 million, so almost twice as much as Dredd's production budget. Then you have a tenner spent on Dr Doom and probably $50 million on that one set they near enough shot the entire film in. And no doubt there were misc items like glass hammers for 9k a pop.

Kinda funny that this entry hasn't been removed from the wiki page yet..

"A sequel is scheduled for release on June 9, 2017 in 3D.[93]"

I used to be gutted about the lack of sequel for a critically praised Dredd film which didn't do very well at the box office, but today I'm just glad I'm not a Fantastic Four fan.

$200 million down the crapper.

I'm guessing Alex doesn't read this but it'd be interesting to know if the potential for Dredd came to mind while watching Fury Road (if he did). I know the budgets are different but maybe focussing on the crazy characters of the cursed earth rather than an epic mass car chase would bring costs down a bit and also work to Dredd's strengths. Plus I recall Mad Max having a few production problems which may have seen costs rise.

Swearing in as a lowly MP. It must be soul destroying for a few seconds, before pondering 'What other jobs in Britain guarantee me a whopping five year salary regardless of how crap I am at the job?'.

Sackhoff may have been a good pick for Judge Kaplan had the role been expanded a little a'la Dredd Vs Lex. Though it's probably a good thing it wasn't. There's a couple of reasons a cliched cat fight wouldn't have been preferable to what we got.

Though now that there's a slim chance we won't get a sequel it's nice to think about a slightly extended cut with stuff like this added.

I kind've enjoyed the first one for what it was but I knew the second would annoy me, regardless of Hasselhoff. Better to leave the memory untainted.

Cavill sez no. It also looks like they used the British date format but it's difficult to say seeing as they switched the year around.

So what Garland's saying is that he reckons there's at least one more Dredd film in the tank. Sweet!

Funny thing is that I can imagine this feeling less incoherent to non-fans stumbling across it. It's fun and wacky, and the good is often as strong as the bad (the former mostly occurring early on), but the complete disregard for canon is quite jarring/off-putting. But worse than that, it's an inferior retelling overall. I understand there may be difficulties condensing the original origins into a 25+ minute video while not making it feel like a recap, but I'm sure it could be done without requiring the whole thing be thrown in the bin.

That said. While it bothers me that some may take this is as the real origins of Judge Death, I thought they at least portrayed him really well under the circumstances (from childhood onwards). Definitely a thumbs up on that score.

How did you watch those?

I'm not really arsed about the intricacies of the legal debate but I would've thought this could be seen as a good way of testing the waters for animated Dredd (and other characters). It's free and someone else does the donkey work.

Yeah, I'm definitely not liking aspects of that animation style. Characters seem to jarringly flop around like they're made of liquid or something.

Though on a more positive note, I'm definitely more interested in the story side of things. It does look viciously fun.

There's quite a contrast in quality there, I think. Backgrounds and 3D stuff looks great but the 2D characters/animation are not to my taste at all. Not that I won't watch it, but still...

As soon as I saw the screenshots I knew I'd be a decent story I'd be most banking on.

I think he's teased us long enough now. Let's go find him and punch the palms of our hands menacingly.
