Sorry it took me a few days to get back to you...

Steve, the MAME X-Box Disk will only work in a modified (or chipped) X-Box (as far as I know!).  There are a number of different versions available - all pretty good.

WOD, I originally tried chipping my own X-Box - and failed miserably...I was burning myself and dropping solder everywhere...in the end I sent my X-Box to a company that specialises in such and they did a great job.  As I reside in Australia, the law is a bit up in the air at the moment with regard to having consoles chipped...as far as I know it is now illegal in Australia to get a console modded.  But it wasn't when I got it done about a year ago.  It's a grey area.

Not sure if anyone is aware...I've been running MAME on my XBOX (modded) for a while.  The original MAME executable is burnt onto a DVD-R, plus literally thousands of roms...all with a nice graphical interface.  Makes a difference playing all the old classics in the comfort of your lounge-room, plus the use of a nice hand-held controller.

However, it's a bit like it's PC equivalent in that not all the roms work.  But what the heck - 90 percent of them do.

Prog / Re: Mortis/Half-Life

With regard to how Mortis will come about...it would be interesting if they could somehow integrate the recent Death strip (final episode of 'The Wilderness Days') with Half-Life.

In the last couple of pages, we see the country hick riding the horse and getting sucked into the astral plane to do battle with Death...maybe the horse could somehow become Mortis?

Help! / Need the title of children's book from 70's
15 February, 2004, 08:07:52 AM
Howdy.  I'm trying to track down a children's book from my childhood days.  For the life of me I can't remember the title or the author.  Here's the info...the book would have been published in the mid/late 70's (possibly very early 80's).  It was a semi-large hardback kids book (aimed at probably the 7-11 age group).  The subject matter is as follows...the story (as I remember) was about a race to get to the moon (sort of Jules Verne type stuff).  Each page of the book would have a lavish and very detailed picture of an imaginary moon-rocket ready to blast off, etc.  The art work was very reminiscent of Tintin/Herge, Scarlet Traces, etc.  Extremely detailed.  Some of the picture were cross-sections of the rockets, showing very detailed interiors.  As I recall, some of the rockets were stuck in huge cannons/guns, etc.

Not really related to 2000AD, but the artwork, if I remember was something pretty special.

Not much to go on...but if anyone has any idea of the title or the author, please let me know.  Keen to track down a copy for my nephew.  Cheers.

General / Re: Thinking about quitting 2000AD...

Some interesting points-of-view.  Thanks for the opinions.  I completely agree that my idea is a bit drastic (and secretly I think I would be hard-pressed cancelling my subscription).

Blackbood, that's a good point about circulation numbers being a lot lower than when I was a kid.  I may have some problems finding even recent back issues (strange situation really when you consider that older issues are probably easier to find than more recent issues - must be something quite unique to Tooth collectors in a way).

I think Eagle may be the way to go...however, it will be an uphill battle out here in the colonies...but after all, it's the thrill of the chase that I'm after.

I also quite like the idea suggested (can't remember by who) that I keep my subscription going but leave the envelopes unopened.  Sort of a bit like Tom Hanks in Castaway...almost like a perpetual Xmas eve.  I don't think my mental will would be strong enough 'not' to open the envelope each week!  But it would be fun none-the-less.

Thanks everyone for the input.  It would appear I probably am mad ("but it's a good type of mad")

General / Thinking about quitting 2000AD
07 February, 2004, 06:54:04 PM
Howdy.  Not many of you know me.  Serial lurker and all the rest...yadda, yadda, yadda.  Been collecting 2000AD since I was a young nipper at school.  Anyway, to cut a long story short, I completed my 2000AD collection about two years ago (with the exception of #3 and #5 of the Judge Dredd Poster Progs which, by their very absence, continue to haunt me).  I shudder at their rarity.  Before you tell me to 'look on Ebay'...they ain't there.  They ain't been there for years.  Trust me, I check every second day.

I've also completed my collection living in both New Zealand and Australia (which is no mean feat in itself...other Australian and NZ boarders will no doubt know where I am coming from).  You boarders in the UK don't know how lucky you are.  But I digress.

At the moment I have a subscription to both titles.  Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to walk into my place of work and see the now familiar white envelope poking out from underneath the bills, junk mail, etc.  Subscription is such sweet joy.  I receive them the same day they hit the stands in the UK.  Bliss.

Yes, I also smell my prog.

However, a bit of the magic has disappeared over the last few years.

Don't get me wrong...the stories are still great and I am still heavily addicted to thrill-power.  But I miss COLLECTING my collection (if that makes sense).  I miss the thrill of entering dusty old second-hand book shops and hunting out the comics section (normally full of rubbish).  But every now and then I'd come across the 'holy grail'.  A pile of old progs.  And so the routine would be repeated...quickly thumbing through the progs...barely looking at the glorious cover art but rather concentrating on the prog numbers, hoping to find that elusive prog 534, etc.

I miss having to walk up to some old bloke in the shop (who clearly is past his own use-by date) and trying valiantly to bargain him down a few dollars.  I miss the feeling of getting home with my bounty and to then find the gap in my collection...delicately placing it between prog 533 and prog 535.  You know the deal.

So my intention is this.  I am considering quitting 2000AD and all related titles for a period of about three years.  I know what you are thinking.  Maybe a touch too drastic.

But consider the advantages...sometime in say 2007, I will make the conscious decision to start collecting again.  Like a butterfly coming out of it's cocoon.  I will have no idea what has happened in the stories during my sabbatical (i.e.:  what has happened in Dredd?  Is he still around?  Was he ever replaced? Did John Wagner bring Johnny back to life?)  You get the picture.  Complete ignorance to what has happened from 2004-2007 (maybe even longer?).

Once I have made the decision to start collecting again, it will be like dying and going to 2000AD heaven.  In three years time, there will be at least 150 progs missing from my collection (not to mention end-of-year titles, megazines, etc.)

A serious overdose of thrill-power would be forthcoming.  I cannot begin to imagine what sitting down with say 150 unread progs would be like.  I would think an experience unparalleled.  Not only could I hunt down these progs in second-hand bookstores, but I could no doubt pick up the odd prog via Ebay.

Anyway, these are my thoughts.  What do you think?  Is there method to my madness?  Or am I just clinically insane?

"Come on ladies, get bidding..."

He has got to be kidding.  I think the Prog 745 is more realistically valued!

He is requesting that "photographs/information" are sent to him - someone should send him a scan of Demarco/Anderson et al.

Ahem...

Hi, my name is Krakajac and I'm a bona fide lurker.

I've been lurking now for at least a year and read the message posts every day.  I must have made at least 4 posts in that time.  One of those posts was telling Sc*j* that I thought he should be strung up.

I recognise that I have a problem...but they say recognising that you have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery.

I live in Oz by the way and will be taking bets on the World Cup in due course.  England 33-1 to win the cup.  ;)

"Two men enter...one man leave."

Could someone please post a pic of the comic?  Living in the Melbourne-Sydney Concurb, we haven't been blessed with 'Striker' as of yet.

20 pounds to the first person who can get a shoddy line drawing of Judge Striker published in the Nerve Centre (just like the old days).

Paul, don't rule out the XBOX either as an option...if the Dredd vs. Death game is released on the XBOX (as the powers-that-be reckon), it will look a lot better than the other consoles.

I have had an XBOX for over a year and can definitely recommend one.  I have a mate who has a PS2 and whilst it is also a great piece of machinery, the XBOX, in my opinion is a better option (i.e.:  it has a hard drive and support for XBOX Live).

However, I'm not sure if the XBOX supports the Eye Toy games that you are keen on.

Welcome to the world of console gaming...you've taken your first step into a larger world ;)

Off Topic / Re: Annoyed at Lucas?
05 July, 2003, 05:22:49 PM
What is missing from the prequel movies?

I think the vital component is the complete and utter lack of ARGUEMENTS between the characters.

The original trilogy had everyone having a go at everyone else...R2 bleeping 3PO, Solo cursing 3PO and Chewie, Leia cursing Solo (initially anyway), Skywalker and Solo continually arguing (at least in ANH)...whilst all the action was occuring, the main characters were having a dig at each other...

In the prequel movies, everyone talks calmly...the Jedi almost appear asleep, even in the action scenes.  I think Lucas could have improved the whole tone of the prequels by portraying the Jedi as more 'swash-buckling', maybe even along the lines of Nikolai Dante...Obi-Wan's character could possibly have been an exception and played off the flamboyance of other Jedi such as Mace and Qui-Gonn.  Everyone is way too calm in the prequels.

Secondly, the stories of both TPM and AOTC were too complex and based around 'political intrigue'.  The original trilogy were simple action romps with good guy vs. bad guy.  We knew who the enemy was.  The prequels are clouded with regard to who is good and who is bad.

However, when all is said and done, both TPM and AOTC are in my DVD collection.  I for one think the sabre duel between Obi-Wan and Maul is a highlight of all five movies.  Yoda's effort is another thing all together.  I cringed in my seat :)

Damn you.  Damn you all.  Can't you see I just want to be accepted?

LOL.  Nup, I'm just an ordinary dude living the good life in the Oz Radback.  However, to aspire to WAGNER's levels of greatness would be a thing to behold to be sure.
