Books & Comics / Re: Whats everyone reading?
23 July, 2010, 08:31:10 AM
Finally after many years got around to reading the post issue 50 Shade's. I can see why they weren't too well recieved but have to say I really enjoyed the first couple of stories and the last three parter was great. Ok so it lost a little (a lot) in the middle there, but even then had some great ideas. Love the Sinita + Suit relationship!

In some ways those middle issues had too much going on and I suspect I was missing a whole load on meaning and subtext and what not. Its just another of its was Shade and his madness what done it story and frankly it didn't grip me enough to work with it more. Added to that I'm far from Richard Case's biggest fan, just don't get on with his art on the whole meant I drifted in the middle there.

Still much to admire in these final issues and some great stuff in there and a fantastic ending that the series deserved. Good stuff.

Now I finally get to 'Flu', with apologises to Wayne who sent me it a while ago and even though it go elevated up the read pile has only just made it to the top... looking forward to this one...

Maybe they didn't like the whole "Statue of Liberty being blown up" business in the pages of the Armageddon: The Bad Man story which is bagged with issue 300...?

Hey well if it is this then DEA are reading the comic and enjoying it enough to keep it. Might be a surprisingly successful marketing drive!

Welcome and aboard and have fun.

Hope you enjoy catching up as much as I did. Started reading again about 3 years ago now and will very shortly have finished reading all the progs I missed in my 10 years + in the wilderness. I have to say its been mighty good fun.

There again, if 2000 AD's formally announcing the Dredd casting tomorrow, then that will get some needed media attention, and bring more cameras and bloggers to their booth.  Here's hoping!!

Actually that's kinda the point. Even if they did announce the Dredd casting or a 2000ad TV show (not that I'm saying for one minute thats going to happen) that'd been one story in a host of media stories at San Deigo. Where as it could be THE story at a different event (again I'm assuming a great deal here). A week of coverage over at CBR and Newsarama and other nerdworthy channels.

I Think a S&S sponsored presence at subsequent shows would have far more impact?

I use Barney all the time, but why has it stopped being updated, and will it ever be brought up to date, and what do I do about it if I spot mistakes?

I think I remember Wake saying that since the official website now carries much of the information that was held on Barney there was no point maintaining it that took a lot of time.

The only trouble is the official website already has a few gaps (issues 1675/6) as they struggle to keep things up to date. Completely understandable given the work they have to do.

Still its a shame that Barney is now only a complete record of the first 1650 issues and 32(ish) years!

This is something that worries about 2000ad at Comic con. Don't get me wrong they know much more about the value of being there and all but when you compare the 2000ad stall to Marvel's golden throne

and the 20ft Destroyer robot about to be unleashed behind it

You kinda think they might get lost in the crowd? Maybe attending smaller events might mean they have a bigger impact? But then Maybe going to Comic Con is about meeting with people in the industry?

Help! / Re: Cheap comic storage?

If your looking for bags boards and just cardboard storage boxes I personally go to Silveracre. For comics they are very expensive but for supplies they are really good value and the £7 cap on postage is a boon if you're doing a big order.

Jez don't do that. Got quite a fright at the thought of Barney being down. Invaluable resource.

Gah! I don't remember much about Shadows either, so was bowing to what I presumed was a superior knowledge!

Christ that's not the sort of thing you hear in reference to me!

Anyway have to agree with Tordelback as I mentioned on my review thread pestering 'Shadows' was a great strip, typical Milligan.

Likewise since I'm in an agreeing frame of mind James Stacey is spot on. Get the Prog cos its blooming fantastic at the moment and there's a nice little jumping on point (I assume) in the shape of prog 1700 just around the corner. So buy the prog now so you're fully warmed up for the new stories when they start.

I think you're refering to Shadows.

Not much info on Barney alas

But a really fun story from Milligan and as a yet perfected Elson Droid

Mulligan dosn't look like the type who has gone through 15 years in the toughest school on earth.

Just like Anderson!

Meanwhile, I might be picking up a second Tharg (at retail price) and was thinking about gifting it to a 2000AD creator... I dunno.  For some reason I thought it might be a nice gesture to stick it in the post to Mills, Wagner or O'Neill - just to say thanks for all the Thrills, and for bringing Tharg into the world.

Bloody hell that would be a very generous thing to do. Pat Mills is the original Tharg so he'd be a very cool choice to boot.

Was there even a hint at when that annoucement might be? I mean can I be blindy optimistic and think it might be this weekend at San Deigo?

Oh, its nothing San Deigo size (I dont think). Its a new ongoing 9 parter coming up in the prog that the writer and artist were cool enough to send me the first part of and come on and talk about it.

Ohhh I see. Intrigued to hear more when the time is right.
