If I remember correctly is was a fan campaign by Trek fans that made Paramount green-light the Star Trek Phase II series which eventually evolved into Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Between ST-TOS series 2 and 3 there was a fan campaign to bring it back. Allegedly (according to wikipedia) it led to one million letters being sent.

This is REALLY good. If we do get a sequel it has a ready made promotional campaign in this alone...

If we do get our beloved sequel made I hope it is properly marketed this time as I feel this was one of the major failings of the first film not suceeding at the box office. As stated befor it already has a form of free advertising from all the petitions and film sites getting behind it.
