Title: Message Board ettiquete
Post by: Demon Chicken on 16 December, 2004, 04:12:56 AM
OK, I can see this isn't going to work but, I'll persevere.

Can we come up with a few simple "rules" for behavious on the board?  That way we can ask Wake to make people agree to them when registering and we won't have all this sc*j*/newbie hating stuff going on?

1. Irony is very difficult to identify from written text.
2. Please try and learn to spell/ use proper grammar, I'm sure English is most people heres first language
3. Spend a quick moment to check the content of your message before posting it.
4. Don't rattle Johnnyeyebrows' cage unless you want bitten
5. Don't mention the war.
6. Remember to consider the "subject" heading of your message before posting.
7. Don't randomly post pics/links/etc. without introducing yourself first.
8. etc....

Is this a good idea/bad idea?
Actually to be frank I don't care what you think so :P to you all! Especially Wils coz he smells of wee!

I'd add that if someone specific is annoying you it's probably best to just block their messages rather than get into  a protracted argument with them. you can do this by entering the chatroom and typing:

/kill username

Where "username" is the name of the user you wish to block.

Give people the benefit of the doubt unless they've made it completely obvious that they mean to annoy/offend.

This should apply to boarders you know as well as new boarders.

If you make a mistake apologise.

Listen to what other people say.

"i am truly sorry.
and i find sorry the hardest word to say"

If you truly are then dont post unless you have something that needs to be said.

Posting "i agree" above adds nothing constructive and annoys others.

You've posted nine threadsand over 100 messages since joining. When I joined I posted 1 thread and about 5 messages.

If you truly are sorry then I welcome you to the board and look forward to hearing your opinions. If you mess around and agitate people then you wont last long.

Thats all I have to say.

Jared.

Good idea, just as long as it doesn't get too facist... :)

Do we have any T&C's that have to be agreed to I can't remember now... ?

of comunism but not actually use comunism itself.

"I'm sure English is most people heres first language"

That should be "I'm sure most people here's first language is English"

Or where you being ironic...;-)

Oh and the winking smiling can flag a joke for the hard of humour but don't use as a 'get out of jail free card' for abuse

You only object to number 8?? Christ, I'll have trouble with most of 'em. I can't spell for tofee (sic). my grammar is bad (and i'm too old to learn), If I lose Irony (and sarcasm) i'm stumped, I don't have long enough breaks to double check posts (I usually post from work), and half the time I forget to put a subject heading at all!

Help!! :)

Mind you, I don't know how to post pics so's I should be safe there!  ;)

Oh, and Johnny's a pussycat.  :)

I`d suggest a simple list of do`s and don`ts that can be sent to new people. The board runs pretty well the way it is, but there`s no reason why new people should have a clue about net etiquette, so a simple advisory email might be a good idea...Things like
- lurk for a while before posting
- just killfile people you can`t stand
- don`t be a bastard
- label your post (eg Spoiler, Off topic) etc before starting a new thread

and so on....that`s my idea

 'Don't act like a cunt'

? What lay on my side, purse my lips in a provocative way and recite shakespeare?

This killfile business, how do you know someone has kill filed you?

PERSONALLY I don't see we need to have these rules but I'll go with a majority decition if thre is one.

It seems like there wasn't talk of 'rules' until someone showed a need for rules to be shared with them. I think normal rules of social engagement apply. and common sense. Spelling though? I'm skrewed!

I don't like the idea of rules per se but there's no problem having a few guidelines. There could be a link to them near the 'post message' buttons.

Take a look at the guidelines suggested for the 2000AD Yahoo group

I actually find swearing a bit annoying. There's a time and a place for everything but this whole "I'm swearing because I'm angry/cool" attitude is a bit tedious. Creative swearing is better and made up swear words are best.

Ass-spelunkers.

For the first time ever, I agree with Jared Atchoo-ie.

My insult of the week, which has a peculiar mix of non-aggression, quaintly schoolboyish overtones, a pleasant "rolls-off-the-tongue" syntax and a catalogue of uses, is:

Nobber.   (pronounced thus:  "NOB-uh.")

Try it.  It's very liberating.

Yes, it sounds great.

But shouldn't it be spelled with a "k"?

Knobber.

Depends whether you want the Cocksmokers and Shitehawks to start pronouncing it Kuhnobber, your royal Flangeism.

....although thinking about it, Kuhnobber isn't too bad either.  Maybe a rare sub-strain of Nobber hailing from the North, which deludes itself with Megalomaniacal Icthyoid fantasies?

i hate rules, but in loo of common sense i guess we have to have them.

but i suggest we deal with problems in the same way i do at work, get very angry silently, pull faces behind the irritants back, moan & whinge & back stab to other people, whilst maintaining a front of surly, snappy terse replys... oh yeah & the rolling eyes in front of other people, yes the mature open approach, solves all my social problems.

spelling ? oh pleeeeese !

Don't think rules or guidelines are really needed, mostly we seem to sort things out ourselves after a bit.
