Ooh, that looks cool. Don't remember it, but I'm surprised I never played it considering I loved Heroquest, Space Hulk and all those Games Workshop fantasy and sci-fi games when I was a youngster.

What about 'Talisman'? That game was my favourite fantasy board game. I have it somewhere....and the Chainsaw Warrior one. A trip up to the loft is in order, I think.  ;)

Talisman was an extraordinarily good game.
I've seen it (or at least what I assume to be it or a version therof) in my local comic shop recently.

Games Workshop did some cracking board games in the olden days- their Dracula and Mummy boardgames were cracking fun.

I still play the Dredd one - cos it's arsom - & the Rogue Trooper one - not quite as arsom, & sometimes the Dr Who one. Games Workshop used to do wicked stuff.

Oh yes, I have the Dracula one, too. Epic game! :D

Ah, there's no board games like those old Games Workshop board games. The best thing is that they're perfect for starting the little ones out; my 8-year-old and I play Heroquest every Friday night and she loves it.

Not just little ones - my other-half loves the Dredd game, yet doesn't really care for the comics.

When I was a kid it was all about Top Trumps

I specifically remember the Horror ones!

I've got the 'recently' published FURY OF DRACULA by Fantasy Flight Games. It's an excellent design, but only works with the maximum roster of Players; the rules reckon two players can manage, but it means one Player has to handle more characters than he can realistically handle. I also have Games Workshop's Dredd, Rogue Trooper, Block Mania and Mega Mania.

I have some ARKHAM HORROR boardgames by Fantasy Flight, and a badly-written game called GHOST STORIES (the rules don;t make much sense. I need to remember to sell them all on eBay due to a lack of co-players.

There were so many. Block Mania was a particularly fine example and Rogue Trooper was fine too. My favourite however was 'Kings and Things' that was hours of fun and the way it was designed meant no two games were close to the same. Oh and cute design with Killer Penguins. Can't get better than that.

I always thought the Arkham Horror games were supposed to be good (I've never played any).

Recently I bought the Last Night on Earth zombie board game and it's great fun. I'm going to grab the expansions.

Games Workshop games I've got: Heroquest, Advanced Heroquest, Mighty Warriors, Battle Masters, Space Hulk, Space Crusade, Advanced Space Crusade, Blood Bowl (2nd edition) and Dungeon Bowl.

Other cool games: Fantasy Warriors (a Warhammer-type game), Crossbows & Catapults, Weapons & Warriors, Lionheart and Waddington's Bigfoot game (ha).

Jesus christ I used to love crossbows & catapults!

I remember seeing it in catalogues - I never had it but it was of those things I used to obsess over as a kid (like scalectrix), and the longer went by without having it the more I obsessed.

When I was a kid, I used to go round to my best mate's house with a board game tucked under my arm (Mysteries of Old Peking anyone? Lost Valley of The Dinosaurs), and I remember that his mum would always laugh at me because her son had the latest megadrive or commodore amiga and she thought it was hilarious that I was turning up with a board game. What a cow.

Me and my mates used to break up our regular saturday D&D sessions with the occasional board game day. Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper were the favourites, but I vaguely remember playing Space Hulk too.

There was also one that involved customising cars with armour and machine guns etc - the "pieces" were just cards about 3"x5" showing the outline of your car, on which you placed various upgrades as you bought them. Don't think there was a board as such. Does this ring any bells with anyone?

Crossbows and Catapults was the business! I never used to get cool games like that, but it was a birthday present one year and I played it absolutely non-stop forever. Great days...

I remember owning a game called Diamond Hunt too (all about travelling the world searching for hidden gems) and that was great until my Mum chucked it in the bin one day, for no reason whatsoever. Tsk.

Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs! I hadn't thought of that game in about a quarter of a century! With the lava from the volcano creeping across the board, and your little chaps with pith helmets seeking Aztec coins! For a Ray Harryhausen-obsessed lad, it was like living out a dream.

Arkham Horror and Prince of the City are good games but suffer from the problem that they take far too long to play.
I tend to avoid games now that take so long to set up that by the time you're ready to start you've lost interest.

Good, quick games (that is they take less than an hour to set up and play) include,
Grass,Nuclear War,Ave Ceaser,Family Business,Pit,Der Ausreiser,Career Poker,Andy Capp (though its official German name is Willie Wacker and tends to give people the wrong idea),Warlock and Unspeakable Words.

I'm sure I've more but not about to go through the cupboards right now :)

I played Escape from Colditz, once, in installments, at a youth club, for an entire year, and never finished the damned thing.

Did you ever play that Star Trek: The Next Generation Board game that came with a video? Good times.
Dug that out a couple of years ago, made a fun drinking game.

There were in fact two different games, the original from Invicta: Escape from Colditz Castle- there was a 3D model version too.

and the later Parker Bros version: Escape from Colditz -sonsored by one of the original escapees.

Hmm, it's similar, and the box looks very familiar, but I think it was Car Wars I was remembering - but I may also have mixed it up in my mind with the crappy paper cars from the Dredd RPG:

If it was Car Wars, you'll defintely remember the the sub-A5 black plastic snap-shut box it and all its wonderful expansions came in.  The cardboard car tokens were about the size of your fingernail, and while I seem to remember drawing my own 'customisation sheets' rather than using a card template that may be just because we used up any originals...  ah Uncle Albert's Auto Stop and Gunnery Shop Catalogue (2035 ed.), how I miss you.  Stonking game.

I made friends with a kid i didn't particularly like just to play Crossbows and Catipults.
Stratego was another favorite of mine, then i graduated to Axis and Allies (expensive, i had to save up for months to get it).
I loved board games as a kid but was also a big computer game fan which was a bit strange amongst my computer obsessed friends who just didn't get the same thrill as me playing board games.
Of course this all led to the natural progression of getting into Warhammer when i got my own job (like hell my parents could afford that stuff) and i now have a cupboard with thousands of dollars worth of plastic and lead in it that never comes out to play anymore.

Battlecars was great -- I used to play it a lot at a mate's house. I don't remember ever having anything as involved as the miniatures and buildings shown on your link, mind. What was particularly memorable was a pretty minimalist set of rules that allowed for very fast play and a pleasingly frenetic tone to the action.

But, out of all the boardgames from years gone by, nothing touched this:

Pretty cutesy looking at it now, but back then i was morbidly fascinated by the artwork.

I had this too but with different box artwork (wonderful glossy seventies/early eighties mopheaded youngsters ISTR) and it was called 'Ghost Castle'. You had a spinner and if it landed on the skull you had to drop a little plastic skull down the central chimney and it could go one of 4 ways, setting off various traps. Bloody brilliant.

I had that too (hopefully still do in some dusty corner). I remember the skull, ghosts and traps and things were glow in the dark. Very cool, but pretty pointless because it's impossible to play a board game in the dark. Great game though.

Set in a Bananna republic one person plays El Presidente and awards the position of head of army, airforce and navy to the other players. Then its just a matter of deal making, currying favour and staging coups!
