Title: What other stories would make great films
Post by: nukem11 on 19 October, 2008, 12:15:34 PM
My choice are

Slain which would be awesome like how they did 300
Rouge Trooper would be wicked
Finn hes wicked hero, I think he could be popular if his story was made into a film
Ace Trucking and co
Durham Red

Gerry Finlay Days version of Dan Dare maybe? Nobody seems to like that version but I thought  Dave Gibbon's art was awesome particularly the scary one against the vampires when Hitman loads up just in time to blow them away. Must have been the first time I saw someone shot through the head in a comic book.

Flesh-gory version of Jurassic Park hopefully satirizing capitalism.

Harlem Heroes-hoop dreams meets the Gridiron type of thing.

Strontium Dog has to be a movie no matter how crap.

Strontium Dog would make a great tv series, each episode he hunts down a bad guy, throw in the cool weapons, cool spaceships, cool villans, cool planets and a story arc spanning the series linking it all together.

That would be cool.

Get Paul McGann for Alpha, stick a big beard on that bloke who was in casualty and alien3 for Wulf, bit of cgi for the gronk... sure fire hit!

I suggested a Stront TV series once and someone threatened to murder me.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Matt LeBlanc is Nikolai Dante.

That is a grand idea and probably the easiest one to do. Durham Red might make a good film but vampire flicks are two a penny. Still if it's a good script and not "re-done" by coked up chums of the director for Hollywood, I think it would make money. (says he like  a capitalist pimp!)

The only one that really springs to mind is Button Man. As a medium-budget crime thriller with a strong lead actor and a capable director, it certainly has the potential to succeed.

Shame the BM movie that was being touted a couple of years ago seems to been abandoned.

I just feel with all the comic book films getting made now 2000 ad needs some attention since they've done some wicked stories and has some great characters apart from Judge Dredd of course.

The stories and characters are just something different from what people have seen unlike the typical super heroes.

Jonny Alpha - Jimmy Nesbitt. Strontium Dog the Bountyhunter.
Judge Dredd - Josh Brolin. Old Dredd - Nick Nolte.
Nikolai Dante - Robert Downie Jnr.
Nemesis the Warlock - Princess Anne.
Judge Death - Paul O'Grady.

And it was going so well.

What about if there was a 2000AD film stable like what Marvel have at the moment?

Similar to the 'Gotham Knight' Batman shorts that came out before Dark Knight, you could do the same but with a series of 2000AD Future Shocks, they'd really suit a short animated format.

While trawling the net for old T.V. shows from the seventies and eighties.

I found a reference to a old Australian soap called 'Number 96'. Which is abit like a cross between a 'Carry-On' film and 'Coronation Street '  but it's set in the small high rise set of apartments near the inner city street of Sydney, N.S.W.

I never watched it myself cause it was alittle before my time or the time when I was aloud to watch alot of T.V.

It was famous for having alot fo nudity in time when nudity on telelvsion was a no no.

//http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_96_(TV_series)

Despite this after watching some parts of episodes up loaded to you tube.

//http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zihiEFONJZA&feature=related

In amongst the bed swapping, there on going plotline about pantyhose strangaler killing single young females
Who turened out to be jealous older women
and a bomb planted somewhere in the building on the last episode to end the entire series.

From what I had seen I found the series to be endearing in the same way that parts of Judge Dredd story might be.

I could very well imagine Number the 96, the the same building as a part of Mega City one. Planted int here as it is.

Paart of the city block, the  whoile city block, including the pub and deli that was regular location nearby.

As a Spinoff series.

'Number 96 in MC 1'

Not really being sure if it would need the sex and nudity to make it more popular.

yeah, but then  you'd have to make a whole bunch of Corum and Hawkmoon movies and tie them all together into some convoluted series - "Coming in 2019 - Eternal Champion XI - Count Brass!"

I'm not really seeing a "down" side here, unless Ang Lee is directing all of them............................

There has been some serious talk of 'The Elric of Melnibone saga' on this forum.....

MoorCock 's Miscellany,

//http://www.multiverse.org/fora/forumdisplay.php?f=57

I beleive Paul Bettany is being considered for the role.

Thats if it's true.

BTW, isn't Michael MooreCock found to be held in contempt by Pat Mills?

Hence the Elric is found to be a inspriation for Elfric from Slaine.

Yes, I wouldn't mind Slaine film with all of the villains included.

Not sure if it can be done justice judgeing by the film making standards of people who end up making these types of films.

It's like most film makers these days just use cookie cutters and mind grinders --speaking metaphorically-- to process the these great ideas into medioca productions.

I was going to champion a Meltdown Man movie (it'd be a lone voice, I know) but said film made now would probably be 'appropriated' by the furry brigade, which would just be all kinds of wrong.

Hell Trekkers, but following on from the 'What would you tolerate in a Dredd movie?' thread, no connection to Dredd would be necessary.  You have a roster of horror movie regulars who want to escape an oppressive government in a city sheltered from the post-apocalyptic wasteland beyond it's walls where mutants, cannibals, and escaped medical/science experiments add to the danger of plain old radiation poisoning.  It could be a mix of The Hills Have Eyes and Wacky Races, complete with Terry Thomas-alike character and his cowardly mutant dog.
Actually, fuck that, just make a Dastardly and Muttley film.  Really - fuck Hell Trekkers.

Peter Milligan's Shadows would make a good film, even on a BBC budget.  A good mix of emo and sci-fi.
Mercy Heights is a no-brainer if BSG is what they aim for rather than Babylon 5 (which I have always considered a poor man's Babylon 5).
Another vote for Meltdown Man, too, despite the danger of being seen to encourage furries.  I have the original live-action Jungle Book film in my head thinking of this, and talking animals with a bit of grit might be a thing kids would latch onto.

I was thinking since I would like to see a Finn more than any other I thought Danny Boyle would make a great director for it and Cillian Murphy as Finn. They've worked together before and since Danny Boyles done loads of British film he could make Finn really well since its based in Plymouth.

Also I think Ron Perlman would make a great Jude Dredd if they ever decided to make another.

I think there's something to be said for what the Terminator guys are doing right now. A tv series and movies in production concurrently. The show - produced quicker and for a smaller budget - keeps the franchise current while we wait for the movie.

So in an ideal world we could have a Dreddworld series not actually featuring Dredd himself. This could be on air in 2010 getting everyone ready for the movie. Then the movie itself then a second season perhaps incorporating elements introduced in the movie.

I say all this knowing it's a ridiculous pipe dream but I did say "in an ideal world"

A man can dream can't he?

On a more realistic - possibly - note, I'm going to throw in another vote for Strontium Dog. I know it's been tried before and didn't get very far but look how long it's taken to get Watchmen made. It's gotta be worth another go.

I actually think I'd prefer TV shows to movies though. Not as high profile I know but they offer a much greater scope for character development and slow burn arc plots.

You'd need someone tall with a big nose for Wulf. How's about Stephen Fry?

He'd have to toughen the fuck up though. You can't have a prancing viking.

Unless it's the musical version of course.

If it has to be a movie I'd like an origin movie. First half based on Portrait, second on Blood Moon. I think Jason Dohring would nail a 20something Alpha. He can turn on a sixpence between comedic and tortured and he's paid his tv dues. I reckon he's due to break into movies.

Which is a shame. This guy can ACT. If you haven't already, check out Veronica Mars. Ridiculous kiddy show gimmick of a premise but played completey straight and as a consequence one of the most intriguing and affecting shows of it's time. Jason Dohring, in what I believe was his first major acting role after drama school, completely steals the show.

Or maybe you know all this and your comment was simply intended to point out that he's not much of a name. In which case I apologise for waffling, but he's still great

I just "Batmam : Dark Knight" and thought that they had managed to ripp off Strontium Dog as wellas Judge Dredd. As we all knew about the Lawmaster like bike he was riding.

[spoiler:340yf1sw]Now there's the sonar thing he did with the mobile phones.[/spoiler:340yf1sw]

Which admittedly suits his personal theme, but seemd liked such ripp off of Johnny Apha strontium rays when
Batman was doing the white eye thing with his mask. {/spoiler]

Wondering I should look for any Slaine, Nemesi the Warlock , Rogue Trooper, ABC warriors, Durham Red, The V.G., Ace Garp, Dr and Quinch.

What we need are some of the more "limited" series type adaptations and Finley-Day's are the best for this, Fiends of the Eastern Front, Harry 20 on the High Rock, the V.C.s. even Black Hawk!

Can't believe Flesh hasn't got more than one mention. As discussed elsewhere for me the combination of cowboys and dinosaurs is a sure win.

Having just re-read Firekind I'd like to see that given a go. Not sure all the subtles would survive but with its strong basic core story done well this is a film that could work on many levels.
