Title: Prog 2175 - Semi Detached
Post by: Richard on 28 March, 2020, 01:02:50 PM
Judge Dredd: Hair of the Dog finishes perfectly well.

Skip Tracer, well the art is good anyway.

Survival Geeks returns for its last story, and for me this is the highlight this week. There are two massive and crazily-detailed panels that must have taken Neil Googe absolutely ages! The theme of this story seems to be the exact way that this series should logically conclude actually, as if the whole series has been building up to this. Can't wait to see how it pans out.

Aquila is suitably bloody, and promises more mayhem next week. Also it's nice to have an occasional alternative to science fiction in the prog, and I always love Patrick Goddard's art (can we have him on Dredd again please?).

Finally, I will spoiler tag this last one because I think some people will enjoy the surprise of discovering it for themselves. A new series starts called
Hershey, starring ex-chief judge Hershey,
by Rob Williams and with brilliant art by Simon Fraser, and I really like how this looks, with the unusual use of colour.
At first I thought it was going to be about what she did after she resigned but before she died, but no: it retcons her death in Guatemala and says she faked her own death and cremation. Well, sorry but fuck that. That's a big nope from me. That death scene was a brilliant and touching moment, and this story retrospectively unhappens it? This is the same mistake Garth Ennis made with Chopper, and it seems that lesson has not been learned. I'll still read it but I will never think of this as canon. (I wonder what Wagner thinks about people "improving" his stories?)
Finally, Damage Report gives us an insight into Tharg working from home during the coronavirus lockdown, and it sounds like we are lucky to get a prog at all! So congratulations Tharg and thank you!

When is the last time we saw Simon Fraser's work in the prog ? His last work I believe was in the finale of Nikolai Dante "Sympathy for the Devil" in prog 1791 (2012) and his last Judge Dredd was "In Control" in prog 1717 (2011)

I'm just happy to get the prog this week, with a great Dredd, and some lovely art throughout, that I feel now is not the time to dissect the surprise, no matter what I might initially think about it.  All praise to home working Thargs!

No prog for the few weeks / months (who knows?!) as there are no deliveries from England to the Emerald Isle 'till this virus thing has been resolved. And I've no interest in going digital as I prefer having and reading a physical copy. In the great big scheme of things I know this is inconsequential. But I'm still pissed off about it. Particularly as I'm going to be late finding out what the surprise new series is.  >:(

On the plus side, I'm going to have one hell of a case of Thrill Power Overload to look forward to.   :)

When I met John Wagner at Leamington he did imply all may not be what it seemed with
Hershey's death.
Maybe he knew. Maybe it was his idea. I do think as a general criticism 2000ad is guilty of going back to the same well too often.

Judge Death. Chopper. Mean Machine. Dredd/Batman.

I love having
Simon Fraser
back under any circumstances...

Agreed, so far at least.
If this had come maybe 2 progs after her 'death' I'd have welcomed it with open arms.
As it stands, I'm feeling a bit hoodwinked.
Still, could be worse. This 'big secret' could have been something Skip Tracer related.
Still, Simon Fraser back in the prog, and it was a good read.
Still, as the mighty Bish-Op once said* 'It's only a
fucking
comic!'

Anyway, what I meant to say was (withoout jinxing it)...

I am glad 2000AD has so far found a way to keep publicating (new word) - Since prog 195, I have missed three progs:

228 because my newsagent was a dick who as soon as I missed one week thought I had binned the comic..  228!!  Of all the progs to miss - I had been on a caravan holiday I think, last week of the school summer holidays, probably Brean Sands. I picked up my progs on a Saturday, as they were held at my nan's newsagents, who we visited every Saturday...

543 - that was bad distribution I recall - newsie didnt get any copies in, let alone my standing order and I tried Nostalgia and Comics, but no luck - I think I snagged it a few months afterwards?

Around about prog 622 I stopped my standing order and started a weekly ritual of going into town to Nostalgia to get my prog every Wednesday - I recall there was a particular "short cut" under missing bit of the Holiday Inn next to N&C, that if I ever went over in my haste, would guarantee the prog would be a day late, so I had to catch myself to avoid doing it...

Prog 889 - a relaunch prog with a free gift that came out the week I was in New York and curiously sold out of N&C

With 1246 I went Subby, possibly due to Alt.comics 2000AD or whatever it was called, and seeing people discussing the prog days in advance....

Well first and formost.

The Phoenix - I salute you
2000ad - I salute you

Let's all get to our door steps 8pm this Thursday and clap the tireless work of those on the frontline of keeping me utterly entertained during these trying times... and watch as all the neighbours watch on wondering why the beardo from 47 is a week late... but we'll know, we'll know...

And boy Tharg doesn't half know how to make interesting time even more interesting. I mean we're in a world rocked by plague, huckering down hanging onto the illusion that society as we know it will be fine ... or that Liverpool might finally win the bloody league*... as we wait for the zombies to finally show their lazy arses... I mean they should be here by now right, or has genre fiction been fibbing to me all these years... will they give us a 50% discount on eatting our brains for their woeful timekeeping and then finally as if the world can't be rocked anymore to it very foundations Tharg runs a story that may or may not have been agreed to by John Wagner and may or may not have been planned all along and may or may not rob us of a story we have already read and has had it wonderful impact on us to give us a new story we know very little about now. A story that I will note has wonderful art by the brilliant Simon Fraser - that colouring is just devine - and the first part of which - the four horsemen rousing aside - is really good.

I'll let
Hershey
stand and fall on its own terms and may or may not judge it then.

There are more comics to enjoy here too. Dredd is a fun and frothy number with fun and frothy art.

QuoteGrumpy Blake: Rodan Exty...is he being kept at the morgue on Level 32?
Other bloke: Looks like it.
Grumpy Blake: Then that's where we need to go.

An there we have the problem with Skip Tracer Nolan wants to go and investigate the evidence from a corpse (or experience to acknowledge his capabilities to be fair) and rather than say that he has to say it in 'cool hard man pointed speak' like above. Other than that sort of thing its actually pretty good.

Survival Geeks oh don't you go foolin' me again you tease you. All fun and wonderfully entertaining opening epsiode, glorious art and funny character moments only to let me down further down the line... still this was great so you know maybe I'll trust it this time...

Aquila damn Patrick Goddard gives good Roman art and Masada colour me excited. Enjoyed this, let see how it goes.

Overall a pretty damned good Prog but this line-up has to maintain and that's were the trick is. Still at these trying times lets just be quietly amazed that Tharg can give us this much thrillpower and for that I salute you.

*I swear the lengths to which the red mancs and the blue noses will go to, to prevent that happening...

Prog was waiting for me last night so I made a brew, got settled and thoroughly enjoyed.

I know the surprise strip is going to cause a stirring, but I do believe it should be judged on its own merits.

Thanks to TMO and the droids for not skipping a beat. For more years than I care to remember this mere comic has been keeping me company in times good and bad, so I take great comfort that it managed to arrive this week.

Thanks to all the command module droids wherever they may be.

#PraiseTharg!

Full story here (https://forums.2000ad.com/index.php?topic=46347.0) and on the 2000 AD blog (https://2000ad.com/news/spoilers-whos-back-in-2000-ad-prog-2175/). Notable bits:

Co-creator of Judge Hershey, John Wagner, said: "When discussing the new series with Matt Smith and how it might fit in with Guatemala, I suggested Hershey's death could just be a subterfuge – I had no plans for Hershey and am happy to see others take her in new directions, so there's a little clue in Guatemala, that I don't think anyone spotted, that things were not as they seemed! And who doesn't love a good old story of revenge?"

[Rob Williams]: ""John agreeing we could tell this story, and to fit it in around Hershey's 'death' in his story was important."

First time digital-on-the-day for me, and a great prog to be doing it with. 2000 cheers for Tharg and his tireless mechanical minions.

Initially growling at the Secret Story especially as there appears to have been ample room in the established timeline to tell this sort of tale. However, Fraser on Dredd(-ish) is always a winner for me, and this is exquisitely told by both him and Williams, so judgement is reserved.

Survival Geeks steals the week's top spot with art that seems made for zooming and panning, utterly beautiful. After a rocky start I grew to love this strip, and I'll be very sorry to see it go.

Dredd looked eye-scorchingly divine and wrapped up well, but definitely could have used a third part to include some giant fleas and other HIStK mini-perils - even a Banzai Battalion reprise! - to really make full use of the Rinus Limpopo Quinz Revisited concept.

Aquila has really stepped up a gear with all the time jumps, and the prospect of both the JPF Crack Suicide Squad in action and an imminent pyroclastic finale. Goddard is quite brilliant here, balancing a light openness with rich detail.

Another good  prog. Since the start of the year the prog has been very good. 2020 is so far a great year.

The highlights for me is Aquila and Simon Fraser's art and return on the strip that we will not name. Adding to this some nice work from Googe on Survival Geeks as well.

With all the doom and gloom world-wide thank you for Tharg and team for giving us a ray of light.

Gonna nail my colours to the mast and say that, for three reasons, this is one of the best progs ever.

1. The fact that it's here at all, a testament to the phenomenal effort put in by Tharg's droids under the most trying of conditions.
2. Because I'm reading it after ten days of lockdown and working at home and beyond the fact that I'm lucky to have my family with me (and they're still healthy), it's one of the few things that's made me happy.
3. Even if 2 were not the case, the quality of the strips alone is still enough to make it magnificent...

For starters, Hair Of The Dog; it might be one of those slight two-parters destined only to fill future Case Files but this part is the only single instalment of a strip I can remember that's made me laugh out loud ('WHOOMMMMF'/'FZZZT') and brought a sentimental tear to my eye (the lovely final page). The brace of double-page spreads in Survival Geeks, one of my super-favourites of recent years, is sublime and Aquila is thunderously good, exactly what a historical epic comic story should be. It's nice to see that Dan Abnett isn't the only droid who can pack a prog with more than one strip! And while Skip Tracer is pure schlock I'm not averse to a little schlockiness, especially if it contains full-frontal wizened zombie attack action. Also, isn't Dylan Teague's colour pallet to die for?

And finally, the strip-that-shall-not-be-named. All I can say is 1. it's ace, and 2. it's comics, this sort of thing happens, people die and are resurrected for all kinds of expedient reasons. Don't tell me people would be happier if the last we'd seen of Judge Death and The Angel Gang had been at the conclusions to Judge Death Lives and The Judge Child? Long-running strips need to keep coming back to their bankable assets and I don't see anything wrong with crow-barring in a little plot amendment to facilitate this. I read Guatemala last year, it was brilliant then and it's brilliant now, and nothing that happens subsequently will change that.

So, all I can do is give massive kudos to everyone involved in getting this and future progs out to the squaxx. Command Module crew, we need you more than ever right now.

I read Guatemala last year, it was brilliant then and it's brilliant now, and nothing that happens subsequently will change that.

It's not the same. Judge Death didn't die in his first story, he was trapped in Boing. Bringing back Mean Angel the first time worked; bringing back the rest of the Angel Gang in prog 958 didn't work and since The Three Amigos they've never been seen again.

Reading Guatemala won't be the same again, because the next time we read it, we'll know that we're not really seeing the big event we thought we were seeing, and that diminishes the significance of that entire scene. Imagine if they brought McGruder back? Would Death of a Legend still be the
same? "You deserved better."

To my mind, saying people come back from the dead all the time in comics is just another way of saying "it's only a comic so it doesn't really matter." If I thought that, I would have stopped reading comics. It happens all the time in American comics, which is why I don't read them. It very rarely happens in 2000AD, and when it does I usually don't like it. One of 2000AD's strengths is that death is usually for keeps.

Is that really the case these days, though?  McGruder and Wulf stayed dead (zombie attack version aside), but almost everyone else has come back now, either as themselves or a clone/secret son.

Neither Judge Death nor The Angel Gang got a send-off that approached the sentiment of Dredd's final farewell to Hershey.

It's not the same. Judge Death didn't die in his first story, he was trapped in Boing

I did say in Judge Death Lives :) - which saw what looked at the time very much like the end of the Dark Judges.

I think undead superfiends get a pass.

I think it's sitting in my mail pile, ready to be read, and I haven't had any time today, due to work, and I'm now due to watch a film with Mrs IP.

Sigh

Catching up on the Progs...

Don't like to be negative, but:
Hershey's cheap and unnecessary "resurrection" is the dumbest thing to appear in 2000AD since Johnny's corpse was revived by some talking stones.
First episode left such a metallic tang on my palate I don't think I can continue reading the story.

If that didn't work you (and it definitely didn't for me) you're really not going to enjoy where the story goes next.

Noted.

Think it will be a series skip so, along with skipping the Regned Progs.

And yet I'll still read 'Skip Tracer' in a desperate attempt to absorb even a few Rads of Thrillpower.
What a world.
