Title: 2000AD Forum Sketch Comp #4: SPECIAL BOLT-01 EDITION
Post by: Jim_Campbell on 08 May, 2021, 09:41:21 AM
Normal service will be resumed next month, with Tomwe's cracking theme, but I didn't feel like we could just press ahead as normal this month in light of the heart-breaking news about Dave.

So we're going to do something different.

This month, the theme is STRONTS.

Anything Strontium Dog related is fair game. We're not going to vote — I'm just going to leave the thread open until May 31st. Take as long as you like over your entry — if you want to use Dave's preferred medium of biro-on-Post-It, that's cool. If you want to give us some lovingly-rendered full colour wonder, that's cool, too, as is anything inbetween.

Not an artist? That's fine. If you want to write something, there's a place for that here, too. Doesn't have to be Stront-based — if you've just got something you want to share about Dave, share away.

At the end of the month, I'd like to gather everything together and see if we can't get a printed collection made up that I'm hoping some kind soul will forward to Dave's family. I can't imagine what they're going through, but I thought it might be nice for them to have some permanent record of how well-loved Dave was here.

Over to you, my friends.

I'm not going to disgrace the thread and this worthy project, by getting out the Microsoft Paint, but I thought I'd leave this photo here, from the 2000ad 40th celebration event in 2017. Dave is seen here with Eamonn Clarke, clearly having a great time.

I can't lay claim to knowing Dave well, but we did have a couple of art comp collaborations which involved me coming up with some random nonsense and Dave executing it far better that I could have envisaged. He was always kind with his time and talents and I remember him offering favourable words on my long gestated script 'Plan : Hit Earth'. So he was a dirty big liar too! Nah, just encouraging and tolerant.

I only met him twice at conventions and we shared a brief laugh and drink each time. Dave knew everyone and everyone was keen to be in his company. The work he has done in the small press community cannot be measured and his passing will leave a gulf that will never be filled.

I'm sorry his light has dimmed but he'll never be forgotten as long as people meet to drink and discuss comics. Condolences to all who were lucky enough to know him better than me and to his family, whom he clearly adored.

I'm breaking all the rules, but as this is non-voting...

I'm sure Dave wouldn't have minded (if anything I'm sure Dave would've been dead excited) but I coloured his Kid Knee from the last comp.

Whether you were a weirdo with a head for a knee, a geezer with freaky glowing eyes, a time displaced Viking, a vampire, a knobble headed drunk, a mutant freak with a fist like growth on your head or an over-sensitive alien with weak hearts, or even if you just felt like one, Dave would welcome you as a friend... and probably try to convince you to do something for Futurequake with his winning smile and infectious enthusiasm.

Wooly,  don't think there is a "right" colouring, as the colours are different on the back cover anyway - your version is very classy!

Less an entry and more a regret. Years ago, I talked to Bolt about doing a short story for Dogbreath using Whistler, the Strontium Dog character he created. He patiently listened and said he'd be happy to run it. I did a bunch of sketches and half a first page but never got around to doing the whole thing, mainly as I could never think of a decent ending. After a while, I felt too sheepish to continue and dropped the idea. I regret that I always found other things to do than finish it. But these are the sketches I sent to Dave of Whistler at the time, amazed I still have them to be honest but glad I do. (And yes, I knew I drew his head wrong - Dave never mentioned it)

You're very kind, unfortunately what little artistic ability I had has long since atrophied so the sketches will have to suffice!

Bolt's long-running fan character. There are some early Whistler adventures online:

He also cameoed at the end of Book III of The Life and Death of Johnny Alpha, which must have made Bolt's week/month/year.

I think that and him actually being Kid Knee in SD fan film were his most prized things. The glee that radiated from him when he spoke about them was almost a palpable force.

I've not written anything about Dave yet. Beyond this forum I had no other interaction with him, but he was always very supportive of my drawings and that is an example of the kind of man he was. He was an internal organ of this group and we all struggle to get along without him. My heart goes out to his family and those who knew him best.

I didn't really know what to contribute drawing wise, but here's a quartet of post-it sketches as suggested by Jim.

So many wonderful, wonderful 'entries' on this thread. I plan to start mine this weekend, but really its quite intimidating to try to put something alongside the quality here. The thing that will make me do it anyway. Well its for Bolt-01 of course, but also from the little I knew him he'd have wanted us to participate and have fun with it regardless of our respective talents.

That in itself is an incredible tribute to the man, as has been said - the best of us.

Just a couple of sketches of Stronts for Dogbreath script proposals from my friend I found lurking on the computer- 'one's that got away. I am working on something hopefully a bit better though. The first one was for a script being worked on for Dogbreath, but the writer (Alec) lost heart with it- I think he felt it was probably too long to be of use. I had the first three episodes and tried to convince him to finish it- I had drawn a load of fast sketches trying to work out the character and a filtered down drawing from that, so some of it is just 'bits of stuff'- I did them as I read through the script but it was just one of those that got away so I don't think I sent it to Dave for a look. S/D Agent 'Darkness' Kang Ban Sok- blind and with some sort of mind mutation.

This one is S/D Agent 'Khtapodi' from another script called 'Metamorphosis' that was a Middenface McNulty/ Cthulhu/ Innsmouth on an underground industrial planet. With war droids' mash-up kind of thing. It didn't make the cut so I didn't bother to show it to Dave. I can't find the development scribbles that went with it anyway.

If any of it is any use for filler illos, feel free to do whatever with it- if not it's fine, they were all done on different sheets and assembled together to send to the Writing-bot so they can easy be broken up again. You can see a little of the type from the script through from the other side in some. Hopefully I'll have something more substantial than a few scuzzy warm up sketches by next week.

Dave was one of the first people I met when making comics and Although my relationship to comics changed I always had time for Dave and never stopped contributing to FQP. Comics went from a potential job to a way to socialise and Dave was a big part of that. Friendships became the most important part of making comics for me and being friends with Dave was a huge part of that. I will miss working with him but I will miss seeing him at shows most of all.

My own tribute, not particularly good I'm afraid. Quick headsketches across little notes like I used to watch him squirrel away at endlessly at cons, like what would fall out of your envelopes when he sent you comics, he was brimming with these little square drawings and they were like his creativity really. Boundless, endless. And he would always just give them away for nothing, like his time. I'd amass so much of them but I kept each one - they're priceless to me. I'll keep these too.

It is. I reached out to the pro community to see if anyone wanted to be included and I was, well, not exactly surprised, but certainly humbled by the responses. There will be a few bonus entries in the tribute book when I start to pull it all together.

Bittersweet as it's been, it has been a pleasure watching this thread unfold amidst everything. Fantastic work straight from the heart from all.
And Uwe's Alpha Dog is a proper Strontium Dog.

This is for Dave from me and my friend Alec Robertson, FQP scriptbot. I'm not really the words guy, so I'll just submit this drawing of a couple of characters we worked on for Dogbreath- 'Big' Harry McShane and La Perra Estroncio, 'Noseless' Laura Gonzalez. They wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Dave.
They may not be Strontium Dog canon, but they are Dogbreath canon and that's pretty damned cool too- though there is that panel in Dogs of War with a tantalisingly familiar noseless-looking girl in the background just behind Dave's Whistler...

Two very old friends getting the opportunity to work together on their own S/D strip was like a dream come true- that also wouldn't have happened but for Dave.
There are some things you can never repay, but it would have been great to have a little longer to try. Goodbye Dave and thank you for everything.

Alec did/ does actually have a couple more scripts round about Harry McShane that goes more into his background during the Mutant War. There was also one he wrote explaining why the Scottish muties looked like ridiculous national stereotypes.

There's been another Laura Gonzalez & Slabhead script he wrote sitting waiting for me to be in a position to draw it before he submitted it, it has a nice 'dark farce' feel to it IMO.

When I couldn't even hold a pencil firmly enough to draw with, Rich suggested I try script writing and after a while I ended up writing a Gonzalez story myself that's still sitting on my old laptop HD waiting too.
I did think about submitting that script to the thread but it's 3 parts (15 pages of strip)- too long really and I'm pretty sure Laura's potty-mouth and the tone of the story wouldn't be appropriate for the purpose of this thread either, so I won't.

A very personal one from me. I did various Futurequake and Something Wicked strips for Richmond and Bolt, but it was the recurring adventures of Sun & Moon in Dogbreath that was our longest collaboration. I think it was Bolt who earmarked me as the artist. It was definitely Bolt who lettered the strips, of course, and Bolt who came up with the logo idea. Early strips in particular involved a lot of back-and-forth between the four of us via email, as we thrashed out details and ideas, and to be honest those chats were my favourite part of doing the strips. We were all having great fun (even if none of the readers were!) Bolt and Richmond even 'let' us have the cover of Dogbreath 23, where we homaged Trainspotting through a Strontium Dog filter – a really proud moment.

Dan – 'the Emperor' – had been building gradually toward a final confrontation with Johnny Alpha, where he held them to account for that whole 'Journey into Hell' fiasco. A few adventures before we got there, however, Dan vanished from the internet – so suddenly and completely that I've often wondered if something didn't happen to him in 'real' life. I hope not. Whatever the reason, that was the end of the Sun & Moon outings. I thought idly about pitching the final scripts myself, but by that time the momentum was long since gone. I did one or two more unrelated strips for Richmond and Bolt, but I'd been growing really dissatisfied with my strip work for a while, and reluctantly decided I wasn't really cut out for comics. So that was that.

It was lovely to give it all a bit of closure here, and pay tribute to Dan (wherever he is), their beloved co-creator Carlos, and of course poor Bolt, who – with Richmond – made it all happen in the first place.

Thanks all. I hadn't really intended it to be anything other than a tribute to Bolt, but then it got me wondering whatever did happen to the Emperor, and realising that we'd also lost Carlos since I last drew Sun and Moon... it became something really cathartic to do, a very personal laying to rest of that time in my life. Hope nobody minds.

(It also reminded me why I stopped doing even hobby comics - God, they're hard!)

And yeah, if Matt's stunning piece is the final contribution, that's more than a fitting end to some great tributes.

I met Dave in 2007 at my first ever con in Bristol, before that we'd been chatting away on the 2000AD Forum for years. I was LARF he was Bolt-1. I'd been through a rough few months in my life and I had to push myself to go, I was very nervous and worried about being a wallflower through the entire weekend. Dave invited me to come out with him and some others for a beer and food, and every con thereafter that's how it was. Two like-minded middle aged men, obsessed with a comic from their childhood that had shaped their lives since the late 1970's, staying awake till the wee hours drinking over priced beer in hotel bars and getting excited about art, stories, fantastic flights of sci-fi & fantasy, and all else that fell into the cracks in our lives between cons. A wonderfully kind, generous, caring and considerate Squaxx Dek Thargo that I will greatly miss. Rest in peace mate. Splundig vur Thrigg.

Hello all!

I've not posted on this board for a verrrry long time, but I couldn't help but lurk this thread.
Good god damn there's some truly zarjazz tributes to my old man here. I've been, understandably, not really with it recently. It's been a massive shock to the family and ofcourse his extended family which is you lovely lot. I've had the pleasure with of meeting a lot of you and seeing my dad around you, now I recognise the privilege of those moments. He really lit up around his people and I'm so grateful to you all for letting him shine that way.
My dad wouldn't let me read the prog till I was fifteen, and only after he'd read it too! He introduced me into tooth and I'll forever be grateful because those comics informed the art style that I have now.
I've had a go at a whistler myself and I've gotta say I know now why my dad would often curse the fact he invented a character with a feather Mohican.  That being said I couldn't not do something for this comp.  my version is based on the card I made for his 51st birthday where I pitched him the idea of a future whistler whos adventures had to led to him getting cybernetic aids to keep him bounty hunting.
I wanna pass on that from my mom, sister and brother we all want to Thankyou for being there for my Dad.
I'm sure we'll all see him at the bar in the great con in the sky one day.
All my heartsies
Mini_Bolt // Danny

Cracking good pic, Mini-Bolt -- and I love the idea of an older Whistler with cybernetic augmentation!

And Flip-R's pic (which is also excellent) reminded me that  I created the Whistler logo, all the way back in May 2004: Dave asked for something reminiscent of the classic Strontium Dog logo...

Paying back all the creativity he got out into the world is going to be the work of a lifetime.

Thanks Owen. Yes, I couldn't figure out how to post an image and had to ask for help.
I'm not on here much anymore and between colonoscopies, surgery to my (of course) drawing hand and Family Guy deadlines that were piling up, I only got to this today. I didn't know Dave very well but we bantered quite a bit when I was contributing stuff to Zarjaz! over the years and I knew what a good decent and humble skin he was. Quite shaken by the news, even now a few weeks later. This isn't much but wanted to pay my respects anyway.

Folks... I was meaning to post a quick update this week, just to let you all know what's happening with this.

It's Dave's funeral at the end of next week. I'm going to start pulling the book together over the coming week, with a view to getting it printed up and sent off to Dave's family after the funeral, so we'll call Monday 28th the absolute last call for anything anyone wants to get in.

That being the case, we'll kick off the next sketch comp in the first week of July.
