Megazine / Re: Meg 464: Farewell, My Ugly
20 January, 2024, 09:47:29 PM
Neither the Meg nor them Prog are hitting the heights they did recently, at the moment, with great strips having finished and been replaced by ones that aren't at the same level.

Dredd was ok. Didn't realise it was so long since Anthony Williams had drawn for Tharg. It's good to have him back. He always does a decent job, but his art has always bordered on too cartoony for me.

I was expecting a bit more in how Spector wrapped up. Overall I've enjoyed it. Nothing wrong with more of an old school feel in my opinion. I'd definitely like to see more. Dan Cornwell's art suited it perfectly.

Maybe it's me, but the plot in DeMarco didn't make much sense.
Are we meant to know who the one-eyed chap is at the end?

Likewise a few of the things that happened in Hookjaw seemed a bit unlikely. As Mag said, I think you would tell someone if your boat had been taken over by pirates. And the Navy Seals just showing up felt a bit random.

I've read Under Siege before. It's not the worst IDW Dredd.

Tales from the Black Museum was good. One of the better ones and a good use of a classic character. I never would have guessed who that was from the cover.

Callable Justice TNG all seemed a bit random as well - stuff just seemed to happen for no apparent reason and didn't have much connection with what had just happened.

Prog / Re: Prog 2365: Battle for the Planet

Not a great Prog for me. Can't wait for Azimuth to come back.
Devil's Railroadand Enemy Earth do nothing for me. I'll never skip anything in the Prog but I just read them as fast as possible and move on.

Feral and Foe is a favourite of mine, but the last few episodes have not been as good as the start of this run, or previous series. Which is a bit of a shame. But it remains the best thing in Prog at the moment.

Thistlebone is still setting the scene, but that's kinda how it works.

Dredd is fine. Now I love Henry Flint's work, but no way is this any where near his best work. Sorry - not for me. I much prefer his work on Day of Chaos. And he has always reminded me of McMahon. But crossed with O'Neill. With a hint of Carlos.

But he's not the GOAT.

That's Bolland.

But Flint is top 5. Or there about.

General / Re: Best Dredd Strips of 2023 (Prog Edition)

1. Poison
2. A Fallen Man
3. In the Event of my Untimely Demise

Succession could, indeed should have been better, but suffered from being wrapped up too quickly.

There was no 2000AD artist quite like John Burns. He leaves a fantastic body of work behind him including Judge Dredd, the Bendatti Vendetta, The Order and especially Nikolai Dante, which will be long remembered.

Quote from: Le Fink on 20 December, 2023, 08:56:27 AMperhaps give a regular Search/Destroy adventure a try?

Yes this it what I'd like, regardless of who's writing it. If there are going to be occasional Strontium Dog stories, I would really love it if they just went back to Johnny has a warrant for the bad guy (or gal) and has to hunt them down on a back water planet. Like it used to be at the very start of the strip. With a twist of course.

I've just noticed the end of Fiends says "Constanta will return in Wilde West- coming soon".

Oh ok, but  we had the prologue to that back in Prog 2310, before last year's Xmas issue. Presumably it was meant to run this year, but got delayed.

I have a hard time counting anything that happened in Helter Skelter as canon. 😂

Dredd and Anderson crossing over to Deadworld is one thing. Let's call that the Dredd multiverse.

All 2000AD universes being connected as another thing; that's a 2000AD multiverse.

# # # # # # MASSIVE SPOILERS # # # # # # #

Thanks Jim, I'd forgotten about that.

So that explains it, it's some alternative universe version of Anderson.

But, what this also means is, all 2000AD stories, at least in the Dan Abnett version, are taking place in alternative realities that could be in theory be travelled to by anyone with appropriate dimension jump tech.

But it's largely ignored, certainly for "normal' stories.

So it's not a retcon of the whole of SinDex. Which is great.

Quote from: Magnetica on 13 December, 2023, 11:14:27 AMOnly read Azimuth.

I'd love to discuss what the implications of the ending is, but I think that really needs spoiler tags, but don't see them anymore.

Have they been removed?
Stick SPOILERS at the top of your post and have at it, I say. I thought it was a great twist, but didn't realise the Meg and Dexter's timelines were so intertwined. I've not read much of sindex though.

###### MASSIVE SPOILERS #######

They're not, and that's kinda the point. Up to now there has been no connection at all between Downlode and the world of Judge Dredd.

And now....is the implication meant to be that Azimuth is a simulated world inside Downlode that itself is simulated world within Dredd's world?

I kinda hope not, because that would basically be retconning the whole of Sinister Dexter.

Hopefully there's some other explanation for this, and I'm reading waaaay too much into it.
Can't wait to find out - the next series can't come soon enough.

I has absolutely forgotten that plot point. And the thing about it is, getting the artifact examined, was the whole reason they travelled to Godesberg in the first place.

Quote from: Fortnight on 29 November, 2023, 12:54:09 PMTrouble is, I don't know where to start! So much of the comics world seems so inter-twined, and series riff of others, and featured previously established characters, sequels, prequels, reboots, parallel narratives span across multiple series, and I've no idea what's what. If I start on something that looks interesting, I could easily end up starting in the middle of some huge saga and not even know it!

Yes that sort of thing has put me off trying Marvel and DC.

At one point I thought I would give Guardians of the Galaxy a try, as I really liked the film and it was written by Dan Abnett. But when I did a bit of research into where to start, it all seem way too complicated.

So I mostly just read 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine.

What does everyone think of the repro? Is it worth it, especially if you already have the old, smaller paperback versions?

Prog / Re: Prog 2360: The weight of the world

A bit dip in quality this week, apart from Helium and Feral and Foe which carry on in the same vein as before.

As to the other strips.

Not a big fan of this particular Dredd trilogy. Hopefully it will only be a two parter.

Enemy Earth carries on as before. It's the same standard as before, no better, but no worse. I'm just not a fan.

Which leaves The Devil's Railroad. The subject matter of the script has hit a real low this week. I really don't want to see this kind of thing, I was going to say in the Prog, but really anwywhere.
