Title: Blu-ray Minithread
Post by: Hawkmumbler on 22 December, 2018, 06:16:29 PM
Figured as we have a fair few cinephiles and film creeps around here parts, might as well set up a ' NCBD Megathread' minithread of out own! Picked up a few things over the last few months of interest...

Once upon a time in the West and Blazing Saddles - two extremes of the western scale both absolute stone cold classics.

Wild Bunch is pretty damned good too.

And Navajo Joe for good measure, it's trash but fun and by no means Burts worst movie despite his constant beating down on it.

I'm just trying to fill out some big gaps in my Western collection, and Peckhenpha, Leone and Brook's masterpieces where glaringly absent.

I've just realised I've not picked up Wild Bunch on Blu-ray, and probably time to upgrade Unforgiven from DVD to Blu-ray.

Picked up a few Warner Archives titles for the collection. Outland is a must for any fans of our Edgintons and Culbards BRINK.

Love Outland. It has a scrappy quality, good action, and a brilliant soundtrack.

Covered a few of these over at the Latest Filmies thread but here's the stuff I nabbed over January, mostly through sales....

A lot of nice films there. But Little Big Man stands out. Love that movie. If you enjoyed it worth reading the book too - and its sequel - both damned fine reads.

Colin, well I might enjoyed Little Big Man! Dustin Hoffman nailed a blundering yet tragic spirit of the West character who just couldn't catch a break. I'll be interested to pick up the books at some point.

Some lovely stuff, Matt.

Haven't seen Monkey Shines in a long time so I'll need to add that to the list, and i will hopefully have those lovely Carpenter editions when I'm a bit more flush with the cash come May!

Thanks.
The Carpenter box sets of the 4k, Blu, DVD and soundtrack seem to be sold out in most places, commanding prices of double. However, Studio Canal did release individual discs of these. The only thing you will miss out on is the postcards, poster and booklet.

I grabbed those Carpenter boxes too, Prince of Darkness just arrived yesterday. Was a little annoyed by the way the pre-orders went up, because initially it didn't look like PoD was getting the box edition treatment so I ordered the steelbook edition instead and wound up with both. Still, I have a friend who collects steelbooks who wants to buy it off me so all worked out in the end!

Also just bought the Arrow release of Miracle Mile, had been meaning to own it for a while and seeing it again recently gave me the prod I needed. Not watched it yet but Arrow's treatment of these cult classics has been great.

I did exactly the same except I ordered the standard blu ray and now have it unopened, unwanted, and unloved.

I'm mostly Digital now, for space reasons, but I would definitely shell out extra for John Carpenter's films.

It's mine and MrsoftheSpurs' original anniversary today (the day we started going out together, not our wedding anniversary (we celebrate both so we get two lots of presents a year) ) and she bought me these.

The 4K collection is building up nicely :)

The Marvel movies are 2 for €20 on Blu-Ray in Golden Discs at the moment.

Filled me boots yesterday, and really looking forward to re-watching Infinity War (w/o 4 nephews asking me questions throughout) before the sequel hits cinemas.

Man, i'm missing Fopp in Manchester. Went into HMV yesterday with money to burn but was so put out by the shite selection I only ended up slapping a tenner down for the DVDs of the Frankenstein Must be Destroyed rerelease and the Lone Ranger movie double bill.

Strangely sticking my head in the window of Fopp, all the stocks still on the shelves. Somethings a foot mayhaps...

The Glasgow Byre's Road Fopp was one of the stores supposedly closing down but there was a bit of an outcry and now it's remaining open. Maybe more will follow suit!

Halloween 4K (the recent sequel) just arrived. Really enjoyed it in the cinema so looking forward to a home rewatch.

The Oxford one's the same, which is a bit bizarre - obviously they're still paying rent on the unit, so why not keep it open?

It IS  baffling, and not unlike the famous Byers Road branch theres been a bit of a stir over it's closure, it was always heaving whenever I was in. Here's hoping it's a sign of it being given another shot.

I appreciate the sentiment. I spent many an hour in HMV as a young man looking at the album covers of Roxy Music for wanking material in my mind later on but I struggle to understand why anyone buys on the High Street anymore.

Love them or loathe them but Amazon, and the like have my business for their delivery, prices and returns policy.

To be fair, Amazon don't have the prices any more.  Having established a dominant position they now mistakenly assume that means they get to dictate prices.

I actualy found Fopp was consistently cheaper than Amazon, often a good few quid more so. The average Blu-ray price was £6 and their sales for cult labels rotated, meaning you could spend a pretty penny for a lot more than you can get at Amazon. Returns was never a problem for me either, staff where top hole.

It's true about Amazon's prices.

But there are plenty of other places like Zavvi too which do good deals.

It's a great mountain man movie and 'snow' western, and very much an 'every frame a painting' film. Redford is superb in it!

It's also the origin of this time and tried gif.

-Night of the Hunter
-The Hired Hand
-My Darling Clementine

Oh, and I splooged out on some Eureka! goodies for completing another year at Uni.

-Drunken Master

I really need to add Night Of The Hunter to my collection. I've seen it maybe once, but it was absolutely brilliant. Hell of a film, and some performance from Robert Mitchum.

My anime blu-rays (and a couple of DVDs).  My latest purchases were the original Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy and the complete series of Shimoneta both from HMV and surprisingly both cheaper than Amazon.  And I've just realised my copy of Kabanari of the Iron Fortress isn't in the picture.  Bugger it I can't be bothered taking and editing another pic.

And yeah, sat in and watched it again this morning. It's that rare, beautiful feature that I can honestly say requires no changes what so ever. It's a perfect thriller, and a wonderful movie.

That Mignola art is gorgeous.

Haven't seen the movie, but I think it might be worth a rent as i generally love Neil Marshall's work, and it has been disappointing to hear all the negativity and criticism surrounding the movie.

It's a tragic case of studio interference. An excellent director, a solid cast, and some not half bad effects. All wasted in a butchery of post production and reshoots.

Yeah, there are so many pieces in place that are right and if had all been allowed to gel together nicely it could have been really great which is frustrating. There are enough moments and scenes that I enjoyed that if I completely disconnect it from my beloved Del Toro adaptations I can enjoy it as a messy schlocky comic book movie. In a weird way it's much closer to the comics in terms of the actual nuts and bolts of the world and the story, but it doesn't capture the look and tone the way Del Toro did.

I will say that as much as I wasn't keen on them rebooting and recasting it I thought Harbour himself definitely wasn't a problem, thought he did a good job with what he had. Would be interested to one day hear Marshall's side of the story.

I didn't feel a description was needed! A superb boxset from Kurosawa and some deliriously lovely French New Wave stuff no one will give a toss about!

Also picked up a few other things but just couldn't be arsed today, looooong 48 hours.

That Kurosawa box set is great.

It totally is, have a double bill of Seven Samurai and Throne of Blood lined up tonight with a dram of whisky in the lines, absolute bliss.

Anyway, so since when did HMV start doing monthly reduced Criterion offers??!! Absolute bargains!

I loved Horrors of Malformed Men - and I'm sure you will too. Horror Express is of course another cracker - "Monster? We're British, you know."

Horror Express is a classic.

Saw it first on BBC 2 in the late 70's.

Telly Savalas improvised acting throughout the final act is some of the most enjoyable of his career, he hams it completely up to 100 and is loving every second of it.

"He knows that a horse has four legs. He knows that a murderer has two arms. But still, the devil must be afraid of one honest Cossack!"

Three Films By Sammo Hung

If you like action flicks, this new BD set from Eureka is an absolute must - and the transfers are retina-meltingly gorgeous.

I really hope we get more of his 70s/80s/90s out on UK blu.

Don't know the other two but Eastern Condors is great.

Yup, got that on order. Eastern Condors, Iron Fisted Monk AND Magnificent Butcher (aka the best unofficially Drunken Master sequel) makes this an absolute essential.

That being said, i've still not picked up the Once Upon a Time in China Trilogy, Project A Part 1 and Part 2, Meals on Wheels and Two John Woo Movies sets yet, Eureka have been doing gods own work!

Yessir, they really are.

What I wouldn't give for them to put out Spooky Encounters 1 & 2 and Pedicab Driver!

I've still got to grab their other Jackie/MA sets before they go OOP.

Always annoying when one region gets a better edition than another!

Just bought 3 From Hell (yeah I know how people feel about Rob Zombie movies, but I'm a big 1000 Corpses/Rejects fan!) and the UK version is regular blu-ray but the US version is 4K. Handily the 4K disc is region free, but there's a feature length doc on then bonus blu-ray disc, and that will be region locked.

So basically the only way for me to get the movie in 4K and the doc is to buy the UK and US versions. I've done it, but just wish that 4K disc was included in the UK release to save that hassle and expense!

All 4k UHD discs are region free.

And we always get a blu ray with them in the UK because of the extras won't fit on the 4k disc.
It is annoying that other countries don't follow our lead in this regard.

It's been a while, but I seem to remember Tomb of Ligeia being something of a standout.

One I haven't seen, I adore House of Usher and The Raven, Corman and Price made the definitive cinematic versions of Poe's (and a not half bad Lovecraft) works.

It is a standout. I think mainly because it's the only one filmed on location.

That's awesome! It's made me realize I've seen hardly any Godzilla films.

I also realized recently that despite identifying as a horror buff I've never seen most of the original Universal monster movies, so went looking for some on Amazon and found a boxset with a eight of them for a measly £13 (looks like it's gone up a couple of quid since I purchase). Really looking forward to getting stuck into it.
