Ok, I ask for info again.  I'm losing track of all these chief Judges they seemed to have had over teh years, (they got hrough them quicker than Italy does govts).

I know we've had Mcgruder (retired, then came back)

Cal, (got killed by gravity)
Volt (no Idea)
Silver (Someone said he became a Zombie)
Hershey (Still going, but should really think about life insurance)
Fargo (no Idea)
And Dredd (alternate universe, I think)
Can anyone fill in the gaps, who else have we had, what happened to them?

Slippery PD

Silver, Griffin and Volt (?) where al killed by JD
McGruder also falls into that catergory.

So if I was hershey Id get rid off dredd.  he seems to kill or at least be influential in the deaths of all the recent Chief Judges.

Um...how, what did they do to PO the big D?

CAUTION :  SPOILERS FOR JUST ABOUT EVERY MAJOR DREDD STORY!!

Chief Judge Fargo was lonng time back, and the other 'historic' Chief Judge was Solomon, who was about when the Judges took power in 2070 - IIRC, Fargo was before him?

When Dredd started Chief Judge Goodman was in charge, then Cal assassinated him and took over.

Following Cal, Griffin took over (killed by Dredd when he was brainwashed by the Sovs)

Then McGruder, who resigned and took the long walk

Silver was then elected, and lasted til Death took over and killed him.  He did return as a zombie, and dredd 'killed' him again, though that perhaps doesnt count.

McGruder returned at this point, having helped Dredd end Necropolis, she resumed power, but went crankier and crankier until her attempts to impose Mechanismo Robot Judges led to her resigning a second time (she was not killed by Dredd - Dredd saved her from euthanasia by taking her on a last hotdog run into the Cursed Earth, where she was killed by Muties or bandits)

Then Volt took over - he commited suicide at the end of Doomsday scenario, having failed to protect his city from Narcos.

And now Hershey...

So Dredd has killed Cal and Griffin and cremated the (albeit animated) remains of Silver.

Now that makes 9 (counting Mcgruder and Silver twice as they both came back again [even if it was for about 20mins in Silver's case]) not counting Fargo and Solomon as they are pre-history.

So we've had 25 years, so lets see we divide 25 by nine and we learn that the average life expectancy for any Chief Judge is erm...gets out calculator... 2.8 years.  That is not a good omen for Hershey, no wonder Dredd always turned it down!

Hey, I also noticed Silver was elected!?  If democracy is good enough for the Judges, why isn't it good enough for the Cits?  And didn't we see a reference to an elected counciler a prog or so back?  Is democracy making a sneaky comeback in the big meg, is JD going to be happy about it, is this a plot line yet to come, should danger mouse have a strip in 2000AD?

Slippery PD

Thanks Watcher.  Having no back progs to go to is a real bummer and my memory does get all confuddled.

I personally liked Volt he should have stuck around longer, McGruder was another fave.

I cant help feeling that Dredd will have something to do with the  death of hershey, if it ever comes.  But the judges really need some stability now, so it probably wont be for a while.
:-)

The whole 'Judges or Democracy' thing was settled in Progs 750-756, and there's always been a sort of low-level Mega-City democracy in the form of elected bureaucrats, councillors, city-officials etc.http://www.2000adonline.com/covers/2000ad/thumbnails/754thumb.jpg">

>>If democracy is good enough for the Judges, why isn't it good enough for the Cits?

There's always been an elected City Council in Mega City One.  There's also Block and Sector councils.  They also have an elected city mayor (We've seen two of these - Jim Grubb and, of course, Dave the orang-utang.)

None of these things really have any power. (Or not the kind that's going to feature much in JD stories; there's only so many Dredd stories you can spin out of civic planning applications and public debates on sector transport services.)

Stories which have featured Mega City civic politics usually show it to be massively inefficient, corrupt, overly bureaucratic and just about good for nothing at all, much like any other local council.

I'm sure other can add things or point out any mistakes but I'm sure it can be used a start to the definitive list of Chief Judges. Once the thread is complete maybe it should be stored somewhere as this one of the questions that pop up from time to time.

basically the Cheif Judge has been either elected by the council of 5 or by senior Judges.

How about the definitive list of deputy chief judges now, Billy?  ;->

Does Hershey have an deputy?  I don't remember there being one since, ummm, whatsisname got killed off in Die Laughing.

El Spurioso

Bloke in Die Laughing was Herriman?

IIRC, the council of five now consists of:

Buell, Head of SJS
Niles, Head of PSU
McTeighe, Head of Tek and Med Divisions
Ramos, Senior Street Judge
That-Bint-Whose-Name-I've-Forgotten, Head of the Wally Squad.

Shenker is still the head of Psi Div, but was expelled from the Council of Five following his division's failure to spot the Narcos thing on the horizon.  I can't rmeember whether the deputy CJ needs to be one of the council or not..

satchmo

Hollister, head of Wally Squad, possessor of a truly magnificent afro in Sin City.

Devons Daddy

DEMOCRACY????
they had it and voted in DAVE, remeber, the orang utan who was assianted by his campaign manager,
he was mayor for two terms i think. those of you in the prog 534 club may be at a bit of a loss here,.
but trust me a very important moment in mega city history.
I AM VERY BUSY!
PJ Maybe and I use the same dictionary, live with it.
