"I wonder how well the new VCs would have been received if there had not been a fondly remembered ancestor back in the comic's golden era?"

"That doesn't really make much sense does it? It's a continuation of a story, if there hadn't been a previous story, this story wouldn't have existed, certainly not in this form."

The whole point of the recent wave of 2000AD stories is to increase sales based on the nostalgia factor right? Trying to bring back readers who drifted away years ago? The new VCS is using the name of the old series to trigger the nostalgia factor. A simple equation.

"Ian Gibson is great - I don't like the Halo Jones idea as a 2000AD serial.. :)"

Please stop saying that! You're being weird.

As Strontium Dog is.  I'm not sure what the problem is.

We all know it's a retro season, designed to bring back back old fans and maybe to get Rebellions new found intellectual property into the public consciousness.

VC's for me is working as a strip, whereas the old one never really did it for me.

I though most of you folks liked Ian Gibson, though apologies for posting it on a VCs board.

I'm genuinely interested why you see a difference between the two - apart from the obvious CG colouring. Why do you think the new version is superior?

Lets hope they keep on rolling out those old skool thrills. Robohunter anyone? Or how about Mike McMahon back on Slaine?

Robohunter only if Wagner and Gibson were the creators, but I think we're all in agreement on that :) I'd like to see Sam with a new supporting cast, treating the last Gibson Slade story with Hoagy/Stoogie as the last word on that relationship, tying it up neatly. Perhaps if the older Sam had a teen sidekick who kept embarassing him with his youth and energy?

McMahon sadly doesn't seen to draw in a Slainelike manner any more (though his style changes so often he might come full circle any time soon :) I always thought the great American artist Mark Schultz (of Xenozoic Tales)would be a superb Slaine artist and maybe even author too?.

Pat Mills will never recind control of Slaine though. I turned off to the character after Treasures of Britain. I had high hopes for the new series until I discovered who the new artist was.

VC's was, for me always a bit of a no go zone, even with GFD and McMahon, Leach and Kennedy, future war and all the rest of the ingredents that or me usually make a tasty comic pie .

I never thought that much of most of the characters, thought the story was a bit bogged down, the story gets pretty interesting towards the end.

The new one, despite some initial reservations (based on previous exposure to Abnett and the VCs) and the fact it's not exactly groundbreaking...

I think it's well paced, genuinely exciting, funny, great graphics of course, flint really is a new classic AD artist.  For me it's written as an old style series, lot of material packed in, each episode ends on a great cliffhanger and each episode also contains a readable story .

Also it features heavily around the two characters who for me really meant anything from the original series.  With a gang story such as Bad Company it's harder to relate to a  lot of characters, with a few strong characters and some extras thats a lot easier.

Theres no point me going into a deep psychological ananlysis of why I liked it, but for me it was the best strip in the mag this week (1303) and nobodies as shocked as I am. But I believe it's due more to tellling a story in a traditional AD style than the fact it's a revived AD strip.

I appreciate many people don't feel the same, and if they want to criticise it for merely not being any good that's fair enough.  After all I'm happy with my comic pie.

True. Though I personally don't much too care for it, I'm not remotely opposed to its continuation in 2000AD for some time to come. It's not trying to be clever, just fun - what 2000AD should be about :)

Clarification: Ian Gibson is indeed great.

I'm weirded out by the way you don't like Halo Jones as a long-running strip, that's all.

I was being sarky. You're entitled to your opinion.

Forget it.

The worst piece of shit I've ever fired.

As Samuel L Jackson said "If you positively wanna kill every last mother f***** in the room" then you can't beat the AK47 but its still not a patch on the SLR.
