Though maybe that thread should be moved here until we have established whether it is a game, the tv show or whatever?

Well, it's quite obviously the promised kids' tv show- which, if I'm remembering correctly, was supposed to be a tv-version of 2000AD itself, which multiple episodes of different stories under the umbrella 2000AD title. I just nearly wet myself watching that! My boys are going to go apeshit! I sincerely look forward to buying them action figures, pyjamas and posters and hopefully, he says crossing everything, a new (weekly?) "kids" version of 2000AD, just for them.

But that is really fantastic. Let's hope the announcement at BICS is as confident as we all hope it to be.

Just been reminded of the proposed 3rd wave of Twoth action figures.....

Every Squaxx who didn't buy any is directly and presonally responsible for the failure of the line and, by extension, of my lack of Mek-Quake killdozer-playset.  The ABCs were due to have the third wave of figures to themselves I seem to recall and the absense of Mekkers on my shelf makes Slaine, Alpha, John Constantine, Spider Jerusalem and Cloud out of FFVII look lonely.

That reminds me, must go looking for the missing Twoth figures....

And just how cool would a poseable plastic Deadlock be?

For that matter, how cool would a talking Mek Quake be?

And furthermore, am I the only one who thinks Deadlock has the voice of Terry Thomas?  ;)

Actually, the line did very well. The company canceled it due to a conflict of intrests. ( A company called Marvel Toys selling figures of characters made by anyone but Marvel)

Am I the only one concerned about 'a kids version' of this?
The grittiness and violence and moral ambiguity of the Warriors are their biggest appeal for me. I don't want a watered-down version.

They should make a series of hour-long DVD releases - similar to what Marvel are doing with the Avengers animated features, and Planet Hulk. Then they could make it more to to the original spitit of the comic.

It would be very difficult to follow the timeline of the series (is there one anymore?) but I would like to see the Volgan War, The original Mars series era, the Termight / Gothic Empire era (minus the complication of Nemesis), the Black Hole, the Hekate storyline, and the current Mars Era all covered, and include all personnel changes, so we see the deaths of Happy Shrapnel, Mad Ronn, Hitaki, and Morrigun, and the various incarnations of Steelhorn. You could really get a story which spans a thousand years without all the time travel mess. You could even get a Ro-Busters flashback in there to set up occasional appearances by Ro-Jaws...

Why? Big shooty robots fighting! Merchandise potential! What's not to like?

I've never felt the ABC Warriors to be particularly 'gritty' to start with, and using robots means you can maintain a level of violence in an animated show much higher than you could with human characters.

Cheers

And a good story is a good story even if its aimed at kids, as DCs cartoons so often show.

Yeah. If this is to be  'kid friendly' show, it doesn't bother me. ABC Warriors has always been about the characters and the comedy in my book.

I'm quite up for a kid-friendly version myself.  It was very friendly to many of US as kids, after all.  And because they're robots, you can do pretty much what you like compared to the kind of restrictions you'd have with humans, aliens etc....

What's wrong with 'kid' (I hate that word) friendly?
Roald Dahl wrote childrens books, but few could be described as friendly!
And then there's Star Wars, where we cheer as a teenage boy blows up a space station and murders millions of government workers...

Title: Re: ABC Warriors trailer by Firestep films
Post by: gdarmo on 28 November, 2009, 09:31:24 AM
Its not so much the violence aspect - I was thinking more of character traits like Blackblood's duplicity and betrayal and Mek-Quake's psychotic killing sprees. I don't want those to be lost, just to send out a nice moral message, as is common in most animations.
Title: Re: ABC Warriors trailer by Firestep films
Post by: Mike Gloady on 28 November, 2009, 09:34:25 AM
Oh I hope not.  Blackblood and Mek-Quake's peculiar character traits are one of the main things that set the series apart from other comics that attempt to do similar things...

Still, being a traitorous bastard isn't, in and of itself, the sort of thing that'll get you stuck in adult's-only territory.  And Mekkers could always just destroy STUFF (he is a bulldozer after all) and always be just one lucky step away from killing innocent bystanders.
Title: Re: ABC Warriors trailer by Firestep films
Post by: HdE on 28 November, 2009, 02:20:58 PM
Of course, all this talk of 'kid-friendly' animation might be completely wide of the mark.

It might be crude and funny as hell. Sort of like the Young Ones - if the Young Ones was a sci-fi series with big robots and aliens in it.

Which it isn't.
Title: Re: ABC Warriors trailer by Firestep films
Post by: gdarmo on 28 November, 2009, 03:10:25 PM
I suppose the 'kid friendly' possibiliy comes from the fact that the animation company doing the ABC clip also produced the red button Doctor Who : Dreamland feature. I just don't want 2000AD to prostitute its characters too much so that they become the "must have kids toy" for next christmas. They need to retain some sense of 'underground cool'.... Doctor Who is now aimed at 11 year olds, but anyone marketing 2000AD material should avoid that strategy...

Post by: Bolt-01 on 28 November, 2009, 05:04:18 PM
Micro-Bolt is only ten- and he 'loves' the warriors, so Grud forbid one of Thargs top creations should be so successfully marketed that it causes the comic to go up in sales. Or are you suggesting that Tharg should pander to an increasingly aging demographic, simply because we've been here longer?

Without new readers the comic will die, and so will the IP's. If the cartoon is done well I don't really mind if it is aimed at 'kids'

Well said.

Let's be honest, 2000AD was at its most subversive when it was serving up anti-authoritarian messages and rebellious anti-heroes to 125,000 eight-to-twelve year old kids every week ... whilst those days are gone and I think there's not much chance of getting them back, I'd happily sacrifice the adult trappings of nudity and 'real' swearing if it meant that I got a Prog I could safely pass on to my mates' kids when I'd finished with it ...

Cheers!

Jim

Absolutely. My eldest is 9 and has been soaking up the Beano for yonks now.
This year he's been immersing himself in Janus Stark, Black Max and Adam Eterno.
Looking forward to the next step of the Tooth, but going with the first 50 Progs or so - high adventure, brilliant concepts and art, thrills on every page.
Everything a sprog that age needs.

Spot on. A friend of mine has two boys (6yrs and 8yrs) who have got a big box of earlyish progs which they love. Maybe a new title for younger readers would be a popular scheme, it's been suggested plenty of times before. These cartoons are a great idea and you never know maybe there will be a related comic to go with it.

On a similar note, has anybody seen the Johnny Alpha animation design Ben Willsher (Wils) has done?

Post by: gdarmo on 28 November, 2009, 06:19:41 PM
I suppose my earlier posts have looked a bit ageist against the kids. That wasn't really my point. As you have rightly pointed out, our love of comics was instilled at that early age. I was buying Starlord, 2000AD, Buddy, Spike and Victor throughout the early 80's when I was 8 and loved them. Only 2000AD remains that really harks back to that era of great British comic output, whilst keeping itself fresh to readers of all ages. It is easy to forget that it was a kids comic when we are seeing more adult art in the likes of Slaine, Nikolai Dante, and Necrophim these days...

Therefore, my label 'kid-friendly' isn't really suitable to make my point, so I withdraw it.

What I really meant was that I don't want to see an sanitised version of the Warriors. They shouldn't be made into a politically correct version.  The majority of material aimed at 7 - 13 year olds today just seems a little too... well.. nice. Clone Wars and Doctor Who and the Marvel Kids comic lines are all examples of this. And the equivalent TV output is specifically aimed at the young. There is no complexity to it. Can you honestly see a BBC executive approving a scene with Blackblood drinking oil from tortured and slain robots? I don't. Kids are just not exposed to that anymore in children's TV output or magazines, I just don't want 2000AD characters santised in that way.

All I am saying is that the 2000 AD animated should have an appeal to an older audience as well. If it was pitched at 15 year old anime fans for example, then it would bridge a gap and appeal to young and old, and still introduce teens to 2000AD as a publication. There is a happy medium. Just don't turn it into another "Ben 10"...

I've only seen snippets of Samurai Jack, but that IS pretty full-on on the old gore, innit?

Turning it black and the bugs into robots is a pretty simple way to get away with it too.  Nice.

If we had ABCs and Alpha I'd be amazingly chuffed.

No danger of Dante, Sin/Dex or Button Man though sadly.  Not if they're aiming for all-ages (which surely makes the most sense).  Maybe next time....

I'm also guessing that no-one has the balls to tell George Lucas that he 'can't do that in a kid's show'.

I heard a rumour that the first Transformers film was going to pull a much higher rating untill Spielberg flexed his muscles and demanded a PG-13. Wether it's true or not, who cares? The film was shite regardless...  ;)
