Post by: Pete Wells on 01 December, 2009, 12:00:24 AM
It's Chriiiiiiistmas!

Here we go then guys, the 2009 Advent Calendar! Here is my offering for Door number 1...

I made a festive Judge Dredd film and contacted Toby Longworth, the voice of Judge Dredd in the Audio Dramas and the Judge Dredd game, to help out! He was a true gent so a big thanks to him! I hope you all enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it, you'll find it at the link below:

Pete, you can pat yourself on the back for that.  Honest.  I've dislocated your shoulder in jealousy, you should be able to manage it.

And well done on getting the REAL Judge Dredd too - thanks Pete (and Toby), you made my morning.  Brilliant work.

What else can I do but add to the chorus of approval simply superb. What a way to get the ball rolling.

Mind am I the only person who whenever I hear that Dredd music now expects Bluemeanie's wife to start a voice over????

Thanks guys, you've really made my day! Apologies for my rubbish drawings - see, I didn't want to worry Firestep Films too much, it is Christmas after all! I have to say, it took me fooking ages to do and there's loads of it I hate but I thoroughly enjoyed making it!

Toby was absolutely lovely. He couldn't get hold of a microphone so ended up recording the dialogue into his phone. I think it gives Dredd's voice a tinny, radio-esque quality, it's ace! If you ever read this Toby, thaks again!

As for the music, it was used in the trailer for the Dredd movie, but I'm unsure if it was used in the actual film.

So, thanks again folks, I love you lot!

Pete that was EXCELLENT! Although what really made it for me was my Papa (he was stood behind me watching it) exclaiming at 1 minute 20 seconds "Why's Judge Dredd holding his cock?"

Can't watch this yet as it's blocked at work, but I am intrigued to say the least! And also feeling inadequate about my little drawing if people are making drokking movies!

Cheers Jonny, sorted that unfortunate typo now!

As for Dredd holding his dinkle, in my head I had him leaping at the 'camera' almost like Spiderman. Once it was done though, I twigged straight away that it looked indecent but I was just eager to get the bloody thing finished. Hmmm, perhaps after his ten minutes in the sleep machine, Joe just has morning wood?

I'm coming to this a bit late but what fine treats I've found behind my little doors - sod chocolates (and double sod the disastrous one my folks got one hear which had rubbishy plastic "gifts" in them that'd make the cheapest Christmas crackers look fancy, like a tiny plastic hair clasp). Lucky I never got around to putting my name down as Dredd: The Ballbag Theatre Version would have looked silly beside Pete's (plus I only just thought of it).

Would it be possible to have a separate locked thread where the entries get posted for ease of perusal?

Haven't commented on this thread the last two days (shocking I know) but I am truly amazed.  Loved them both.  The Blitzspears pulling the sleigh were a great touch.  Any story with Ro-Jaws, Mek-Quake (with a fake moustache possessed by Torquemada) and Great Uncle Baal just can't be bad.

And remember, if the standard doesn't drop massively between now and the 19th, it'll drop sharply after Supersurfer's entry before shooting right back up again after one dire entry.

Now, I await your Easter story with interest....

Nice one Cthulouis another great Xmas surprise,I think  what's so good about the advent calender is that we have been able to keep to ourselves what we have done for it and thus making the surprises even bigger.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, Jamescor, LS, and CF are all brilliant. Got a little confused when so many things went up at once, then I remembered that some days have more than one person assigned to them. This thread just keeps on giving!

Not to get all uppity, but at some stage towards the end of Advent could we put all the exhibits together on a separate thread. Just because there's an awful lot of "That is really good" breaking up the pictures and junk.

Two days till "Ding dong, Merrily on DIE".

Not uppity at all, I agree (http://2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,26979.msg473879.html#msg473879). In fact, why not go one better - set up a blog? Folks have been saying they'd like a picture gallery affair for the monthly competition so why not blog the lot of the forum output? The added bonuses are that if you grabbed something from Blogger the images would all go into folders on Picassa (so you could have the image gallery too) and you can insert YouTube videos. A kind of 2000AD forum archive (or Tooth Speak Dump).

I could stick all the contributions up in of those fancy Apple web galleries, like I've done with the last couple of comps? Not sure how the animations would work ... I'll DL one now and see, then report back!

Title: Re: THE 2000AD ADVENT CALENDAR 2009

Here is my entry. I'm not drawing any faggy pictures. Unfettered by the 500 word confines of the short story comp I present

Batman/Judge Dredd IX: Ding Dong Merrily on DIE

PROLOGUE

There was a hand popping out of the ground, like it was escaping from Hell. It was desiccated and withered, like a zombie. Like a zombie escaping from Hell. It was Judge Death's hand. Judge Death is a zombie. Judge Death was in Hell. Emphasis on "was".  The emphasis is because he wasn't in Hell. Not no more. He wasn't in Hell any more. He had escaped from Hell. Judge Death escaped from Hell. TO KILL PEOPLE.

MIDDLELOGUE

It was Christmas in the Dredd household. He had invited Guthrie along for Christmas but Guthrie had turned him down. He was stuck with Rico, Vienna and Dolman. He didn't mind being stuck with them but he was still a bit upset that Guthrie had crapped out on him. A bell rang, Dredd's house bell. He answered the door. He couldn't see anyone. He tried to close the door.
"Hey douche face, down here."
It was Walter the Wobot.
"Walter?
"Yes, Walter. But I had surgery to get rid of my speech impediment. Now I am Walter the Robot."
It was Walter the Robot.
"GO AWAY."
"Remember that one Christmas where we exchanged gifts ? I want to go back to that."
"We can never go back to that."
"Oh, alright then."
Walter left. Went he went round the corner Judge Death who was hiding there shoved his hand through Walter's chest  because he had a new robot killing power that he was borrowing from Idi Amin who he met in hell. He had no intention of giving it back because Idi was a dick, although he did have some cool stuff. Because he had the cool stuff people pretended to be his friend.
"Yesss. One down, eight to go.  The eight I have lefffttt to kill are Dredd, Rico, Anderssson, Vienna, Dolman, Batman, Robin and Guthhhrie".
All eight of those people suddenly felt a sudden chill.
"I'll just turn the heating up Joe."
"Not too much Dolman, it said it might be picking up outside fairly soon and it's not good for the boiler if we keep messing around with the heating."

Before he took his final climatic revenge, Judge Death decided to go on a hedonistic rampage of debauchery, death, devastation, desolation and destruction. He hired a prostitute and fucked her (not drokked, fucked. Fuck), paying her a lot of extra money that he had earned in the illegal gambling casinos of Mega City One. He cheated to take all of the other gamblers money, and then he killed them all to see if they had kept any extra money for taxis or drinks so he could steal that as well. He paid the prostitute extra money to bring her kids along so they could watch, scarring them mentally for life. In one case he scarred one of the children physically for life as his nemes (semen spelled backwards as it does the opposite of normal semen which creates life) turned out to be acidic and it was flying everywhere. Then he went out to a restaurant and demanded he be served veal. Veal. Then he decided he actually wanted to kill those children after all and went back and murdered them. Afterwards he was a bit upset that he'd spent that extra money to mentally scar the children that he was going to kill anyway but he rationalized his decision, using cold,  rational thinking in the same way that all of history's great tyrants and mass murderers like Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin (more on him later (and earlier)) and Richard Dawkins did. His rationalization (that word again, like "family planning" or "nicemurder") was that the mental scarring had kept the kids from moving because they were suffering from Rigor Horroris so at least then they wouldn't run away. Like Anakin Skywalker, he had become a child murderer who had crossed the line by killing younglings. Then it turned out that veal didn't really agree with him and he got temporary diahrrea. He hired another prostitute and relieved himself on her chest. Then he decided to put some more money in her payment jar so he could do a Boston Pancake. Of death. Then he killed her then stole all the money in her payment jar and went back to Dredd's hab block. He had abjured from alcohol this evening because he didn't want to forget his main job and the location. The rampage was over. It had passed in a continuous blur, like a really long paragraph that an incredibly intelligent, handsome, sexy and precocious young man had added into a fairly thin story at the last minute, channelling Joyce in a stream of consciousness style and surpassing Joyce because he was even better than Joyce and Pynchon and Proust. Maybe as he was writing it he recalled that twice he had seen the word "Joyce" and assumed that it meant the TV programme or book was about James Joyce but it was actually about Joyce Grenfall. We may never find out.

It was Christmas in the Wayne household. He had invited Guthrie along for Christmas but Guthrie had turned him down. Wait, thought Batman, why have I invited Guthrie along. He lives in a different dimension and we're not really friends. It's almost as if someone has brainwashed me from a distance in an attempt to lure me into the Dredd dimension so they could murder all of their enemies which would include me and possibly Robin as well.
"Come along Robin and Batgirl we are going to another dimension to find out who would want to lure me to another dimension." They didn't need to worry too much about Gotham because Guthrie had killed the Joker once and for all in Batman/Judge Dredd VIII.

Batman was in the Dredd dimension but they had teleported in front of Judge Death so that  Judge Death could sneak up on them.
"Hey, what's that smell."
"It's probably just Dredd farting, Batgirl."
Robin and Batgirl laughed at the joke and high fived each other. Little did they know they might not be laughing so soon.

Judge Death snuck up to Batman and was about to kill him when Guthrie who was in Jet mode dramatically flew in through the window and dynamically rammed him through a wall.
Dredd and co rushed out to see what was going. Guthrie and Judge Death fighting in mid air was what was going on.
"Oh my God, Death has a new robot killing power, Guthrie doesn't stand a chance" said Robin.
"He's not a robot, Robin. He's a shitting cyborg." replied Batman
"Yeah." said Giant, who had just entered. Everyone just stared at Giant as if they were plotting to kick him in the balls for making redundant comments.

Guthrie and Judge Death flew through the air as they fought.
"Givvvve it up Gutttthrie, I have a robot killing power."
Guthrie smirked, as if he knew some sort of secret about Judge Death's robot killing power. He did know a secret and he was going to tell Judge Death the secret.
"You mean the one you borrowed from Idi Amin?"
Judge Death blanched, or he would have done if he wasn't already pale from being a zombie. Probably if you stared long enough at him you might be able to observe the nuances of Judge Death's skin tone and work out from there whether Judge Death could be said to be more or less pale than he usually is. But he would probably kill you first. Just for looking at him.
"Idi's one of the good guys now, Psi Div have been planning a trap like this for months and I'm the one to spring it!"
"Well actually I'm the one who issss ssssspppringing it, you're jussst the stupid faggy robot who comes along  with sssome gunsss."
Guthrie's face went from being jovial and smirky to no nonsense and tough, befitting the change in his attitude. He opened his mouth to speak.
"Fuck you. I'm a shitting cyborg."
Guthrie fired a massive laser cannon. Judge Death couldn't scream as it was also a soullaser cannon and his soul was destroyed as well.
On the ground Dredd, Vienna, Rico, Dolman, Giant, Walter, Batman, Robin and Batgirl wondered where Guthrie had got a soullaser cannon from. Their questions were about to be answered as the spirit of Idi Amin flew up from the ground.
"Hey Idi, thanks for lending me the soullaser cannon and for lending Judge Death the fake robot killing power (that's why Walter wasn't really dead). But why did you do it?"
"I've been stockpiling cool stuff in Hell for years. I couldn't get into Heaven by being peaceful as it's not in my nature so I had to do it by being violent but in a good way. Now I have helped destroy the most evil being in history so God is letting me into Heaven. Thank you Guthrie and everyone else."
Everyone else smiled and laughed. Anderson came out of Guthrie's cockpit and summed up what everyone else was thinking. "No Idi Amin, thank YOU". They all smiled and laughed.

This was the story of how Idi Amin became a hero.

EPILOGUE

Satan went into Idi Amin's stockpile of cool stuff. "This may come in ... useful." He said with a possibly evil intent.

If you're wondering why I didn't work "And what would that be, you fucking turd?" into this I actually did but in a more subtle way that no doubt you're too stupid to see.

Nice one roger.
This one took blood sweat and tears, and they insisted on playing domino's on more than one occasion and at one point Sophie Godzilla'ed them. I wanted to do all our figures but time got the better of me so had to settle for roughly half.
Sorry its not Christmas or 2k related but this is my passion for you to share.

Ha ha ha Roger, what a heartwarming Christmas tale! Nice that you got a Boston Pancake in there, it's not Christmas in the Wells household without at least a couple of them! I thought Death having 'nemes' was inspired too, great stuff!

Top work from Vzzbux too, it must have taken you ages! As I read this thread whilst still sleepy so I didn't get the 'domino' reference at first. For the record, it IS Christmassy as I bet almost every boarder on here got Star Wars figures for Chistmas!
Cheers guys!

Oh, I didn't get a chance to get on the computer yesterday so can I just say a big thanks to Kevlev for saying such lovely things about me? I'm genuinely flattered fella! Also, look at THIS, it demonstrates how amazing Mangamax's entry was yesterday, well done sir!

Cor! A tripleheaded Christmas BEAST of an Advent window today. Roger, Vzzbux and Colin, you're all gents. That's gotta be your Christmas card this year Colin, genius. Thanks for finding the time amongst work and sorting out the aftermath of the flood.

And Roger, you're a very sick boy Roger. Funny. But very sick.

Boo-ray everyones' is great and I thought we were just going to do a crappy picture like those that we used to find in the papery advent calendars of my youth.

Anyway mine is a bit more Eastery than Christmassy but bear in mind if he had'nt been built in a stable we couldn't be nailing him up a scant 30 years later.

With all the ado I can muster...

Heh, that's given me an idea - I might revisit my art comp entry from last Christmas on the 24th - will robots in a stable do? And cracking ro-jaws gag BM!

I'll be posting mine for the 11th shortly after midnight tonight as we've got men in white suits and masks coming round first thing in the morning to seal off the flat and remove (possible) asbestos. May be a bit hectic tomorrow! Spent today clearing everything out of the kitchen (some very yucky things in the back of little-used cupboards - or maybe that's more suited to the "something weird" thread).

Okay, it's officially the 11th so here goes - I started the picture in good time but had to do a last-minute rush job on Shakara's arms and body unfortunately. Dedicated to the ECBT2000ad podcast guys (and with apologies to Henry Flint). I hope those who don't listen in still get the Lego-head reference.

I'm not a regular listener (although I should be) but the penny dropped like it had been dipped in butter. Great stuff - I can imagine Shakara doing the washing up and singing "Lucky that my breasts are small and humble, So you don't confuse them with mountains."

Henry Flint will still hunt you down and make you look at the things in his head.

DDD - A corking, rymtastic tale there! Superb!
Monarch - If you're gonna do both the script AND art for Cannon Fodder III, then bring it back indeed! I'd love to see that one. ;D

Oh, and MGB. I'm slightly disapointed that you missed that extra twist in the pic. Instead of "huh?", you could have put in "burp!". Repeat offender! gettit?!

Excellent additions - God knows how Christmas can live up to this though, at least with crappy advent calendars it'd be a disappointing build up to a great day but now I am unsure what presents can top all this. You reading this Santa? Seems you need to pull out all the stops this year!!

And Colin is right - always go for the gag if you can ;)

Anpther two superb entries there. MGB, I love the angle at which we see Santa scoffing and only a part of Dredd's head! Bhuna You need to get this produced out of stained glass and sell it to the Church of England and they might get some converts!

Plus I reckon these could be added to the possible Christmas cards that Tharg has to make for next year ;)

Anyway, here's one for all of you who have office parties to attend. If I'm being honest, the idea was actually Lady Festina's and I was egged on by the usual suspects in the Wednesday Night Chat Room. So I take no responsibility for lowering the tone of the calendar :) None whatsoever  :-\

Okay, my go.

I decided that i would try to raise awareness of Thrill-Power by, for the last five weeks leaving wrapped up copies of 2000ad around the country. Inside each of these I left a post-it saying that this was a gift from the 2000ad board and that we hoped they enjoyed there free copy of 2000ad. I also asked them, if they did enjoy it they would be more then welcome to join us here, but none of them have seamed to have done that.

I wonder if any of them were blown up as suspicious packages? Which would itself be a result (not that I or the forum would condone such activity if the outcome was wasting the time of the emergency services and scaring the general public).

COMPETITION TIME!!!!

Having neither the talent of many here, nor the charitable genius of Gavin my calendar window will have something a little different and I don't just mean spelling and grammar errors. I'm running a little competition. I even have a little (and alas I do mean little) prize. The first person to correctly name the 8 creators in the picture below wins the prize of no. 3. The original is an A5 convention sketch by... well that would be telling wouldn't it.

For a bigger picture go here

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_YrqDf9DfKks/SxzMEauStJI/AAAAAAAAAUo/g-YHfhsp3wI/Final%20calendar%20peg.JPG (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_YrqDf9DfKks/SxzMEauStJI/AAAAAAAAAUo/g-YHfhsp3wI/Final%20calendar%20peg.JPG)

A couple of the artists aren't 2000ad related so I've left signatures in to help (one is therefore blindingly easily). One isn't even an artist so I've left the signature and a hint.

Anyway good luck to anybody who cares to have a go.

Christmas is all about quizzes and games and afternoons off - fantastic. Yet another reason why this board is so cool, after 15 days and multiple entries, I'm still amazed at the concepts cropping up. Well done indeed! (generous too, as that's a nice sketch!)

Oh, and I don't know about much else but 5. is Brett Ewins and 6. is John Higgins. (I think).

As for the quiz - great idea but I'm a words person rather than pictures (sorry). Now, if there was a bumper Christmas crossword, I might have a chance.....

Fantastic idea Colin, I love it! I'm usually pretty good at artist spotting but sketches are muuuuch harder. I think I got (in no particular order):

Geof Darrow, Colin MacNeil, Brett Ewins, Simon Bisley, Sean Phillips, possibly Charlie Adlard - though I'm doubting myself and maybe Simon Harrison, though that's a long shot too...

Bah, the sketches section of Barney is knackered too!

1  Mike Collins

2  Geoff Darrow

3  Sean Philips

4? I can see a name  M-something or other
  but I don't think it's Simon Bisley.

5  Brett Ewins

6  John Higgins

7  Simon Harrison

8  Stumped. Got no idea about this one!

Could 8 be John Ridgeway? It doesn't look amazingly like his work but the Luke Who (i.e. Kirby) clue may point to him! Loving it Colin!

Reckon 4 is Green Arrow, by Mike Grell, and I'm still convinced 8 is John Constantine by Will Simpson.

And I'm wondering if 1. is Mark Millar...

Cheers!

Class stuff. As they all are. I've enjoyed every one so far. Here's my pathetic attempts to guess the artists.

1. Mark Millar
2. Geoff Darrow
3. Jock
4. Basset McGillicuddy (according to the signature, even though it looks quite Bisleyish)
5. Brett Ewins
6. Steve Yeowell (no idea really)
7. Simon Harrison
8. Glenn Fabry

1. Mark Millar.
2. Geoff Darrow.
3. Carl Critchlow (but it isn't, gaargh! It's got a Critchlow neck though)
4. Mike Grell.
5. Brett Ewins.
6. John Higgins. (Hmm, still not certain)
7. Simon Harrison.
8. Will Simpson.

3. Jim Baikie.
4. Mike Grell. (not that I'd know - which in fairness disqualifies me anyway) I thought the signature was J. Cooper!
5. Brett Ewins.
6. John Higgins.
7. Simon Harrison.
8. Don't agree with the Will Simpson entirely - The chin and lower half maybe, but I think the hair must be by Nicky Clarke.

No not him.

I just got the fear that this artist didn't actually draw the thing that Colin did first. He certainly did some of the story in which it happened and I can picture him doing it BUT that might be my befuddled memory???? I haven't got my Progs to hand as I'm in work (very demob happy last day tomorrow) - though another clue is the Progs themselves wouldn't provide the answer.

McNeil did Dredd/Alpha first in an annual, that means it's one of the four artists who worked on Judgement Day... five if you count one of them twice.

Right, now that's cleared up...

I think I was supposed to be after Logan so I hope he doesn't mind. Now I may have got the wrong end of the stick with this, as mine isn't 2000 AD related at all - so I apologise for that too. However, it is certainly very Christmassy, so here goes...

It's a video of my amateur choir doing a rather spiffing version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" from last weekend at Coughton Court (http://www.coughtoncourt.co.uk/). The video is crap as I've had to compress it loads to get under Vimeo's 500MB limit, and the autofocus goes in and out a bit - but you should get the idea.

I can't seem to embed it here, so click on the pic to see the vid...

(http://www.aptronym.co.uk/wassail.jpg) (http://www.vimeo.com/8197924)

It goes on a bit, but is worth sticking with. The first time I saw it (before I joined the choir), I was blown away, so I hope you enjoy it too.

Through BICS and involvement in the Judge Minty film I've met quite a few boarders this year, and it's been great fun. So here's to all of you and yours this Christmas!

Cheers,

M@

But you are all awesome. As others have said, this thread is great for variety, quality, and general festive spirit.

Tomorrow I journey to the internet deprived land that is my parents house, and will not return until after Christmas, so while I will have a big bumper thread of windows to ogle at, I will sadly miss the 24th mass chow down. Hoping to have a doodle ready to add as the festive season draws to an end though.

Heh ...! I nearly gave Slaine a line about Christian iconography in the service of capitalist ideology subverting the purity of the Pagan ideal ... but I thought that might be pushing my luck!
Would be a bit too Pat Mills  ;D

Excellent work. C'mon Tharg, more Inspectre is needed.

It never even entered the tiny transoms of my mind to save all my praise up in one big gush of superlatives - too late now.

Really would have saved multiple posts and trying to think of suitable comments for each. I'm just making it worse aren't I?

Is it a good idea trying to save all your congratulations till the end? Surely folks want to hear what we think of their efforts as each window opens?

Well done anyway, Jim! :)

Thanks all for watching and for the kind words

As a confirmed capitalist, can I just say how offended I was by your song bringing Christ into the picture and thus spoiling my enjoyment of our traditional period of rampant consumerism? Please think carefully before introducing concepts such as peace and love into a beloved holiday where they clearly have no place!

Cheers!

Ha ha maybe I'm just in a good mood because I haven't yet hacked my way through the wandering zombie hordes in search of yuletide gifts. So far I've indulged in mulled wine, mince pies with brandy butter and staring and falling snow.

That will no doubt change soon enough...

First full page of comic art I have attempted for literally years and years. Now I swear I started this before I got Prog 2010 and saw the page with Dredd getting a snow ball in the conk. And I had a dream this would happen, believe it or not. Anyway...

Without further ado, I present my entry. I did intend to do two, a story and a painting, but seeing how it took me forever to find my paints and the fact it's been nearly two years since I've painted anything at all, I decided to just use the story. So yes, hope you enjoy the cheesy festive funride I've toiled away on.

Merry Dreddmas.

Or

Judge Dredd falls into a collection of plotholes.

It was a cold night in Megacity One. Not a regular cold night though, hardly. It was one of those nights that chilled the air so frightfully that a gust would feel as if thousands of pins had pierced your skin. The streets were filled with noise, assorted chatter blending into the constant whirring and grinding of various machinery and vehicles. Bright neon lights shone from all angles. Advertisements, warnings, traffic signs, all of them combining into an array of colour.

Things were much different in the back alleys however. They were dark and quiet, where so much as a faint cough would echo on and on until it finally died out. A group of dark figures slowly plodded down these alleyways, obscured by a thick haze rising from the manholes and sewer gratings around them. Footsteps rattled back and forth down the narrow passage as it finally became clear that two groups were meeting in the very centre. Dark eyed youths squared each other up, exchanging venomous glances and hateful stares. A young man from one of the groups took a bold step forward out of the grey cloud, his bile coloured Mohawk shimmering in the faint light. He sucked his lip and drew his head back before thrusting it forward, spitting a mighty globule onto the boot of another in the gang opposite.

The splat of the spit hitting faux leather was as loud as an explosion. A moment of silence followed, accompanied later by quiet mumblings from both parties. Another stepped forward from the fog, meeting eye to eye with his rival, the multiple studs and rings protruding from his face jingling and jangling with every step. "Spud", the Mohawked one grunted, a foul sneer spreading across his face.

"Cork" replied the other, getting as close to his enemy as possible. They stared at each other for a minute, brows lowering, seeing who would divert their gaze first. Spud suckled quietly on the ring embedded in his lip, bobbing his head left and right, the corners of his mouth turning upwards into a wry smile. In an instant, he landed a punch upon Cork's jaw, felling him quickly. The factions shuffled forwards an inch, the mild chatter between them dying into a sterile silence. Cork rubbed his jaw and looked up at his grinning attacker. He quickly leant back and drew his leg upwards, thrusting it out forcefully, kicking Spud right above the groin. The young man yelped like a wounded animal before collapsing into a wheezing heap of leather and studs.

A slow throaty whine came from either side. It began to build itself into a mighty roar, growing louder, deeper. A primal war cry for a primal activity, a bloody nostalgia of violence and hate. The groups meshed into a sea of heads, their self imposed generals fighting at the very core of this brawl. Bone met sinew, blood and spittle mixed into thick bile that seemed to coat the walls and ground, this simple back alleyway becoming a warzone, a sacred battleground, the coliseum of the modern age.

Megacity One, a civilization that thrived on law and order, even at the price of civil liberties, was famed for its notoriously efficient lawmen. They stalked the streets and the skies, proud figures of authority dressed in a uniform designed more for showmanship than practicality. They were the Judges, and they were the sheriffs in this burg. From the shadows, a figure emerged, adorned in regalia befitting a golden deity, a shining chain rattling against its solid chest with every step. The light struck down upon this figure as it exorcised itself from the shadow, purging itself of the darkness. The badge resting on its chest appeared clearly now, no longer a vague shape in the darkness, and in bold engraved letters, it read 'DREDD'.

Like some great juggernaut, the Judge stomped forwards. Slowly, he brandished his weapon and fired it once into the air, the crack of it echoing through what seemed like an endless labyrinth of corridors. Hush descended over the adolescents, their heads slowly turning towards the imposing figure advancing on them. They quietly uttered his name, a wave of terror washing over the crowd in mere moments. "Violent public disturbance, ten years" Dredd rasped, "Incitement of violent public disturbance, eight years, unauthorized meeting to conspire a public disturbance, six years..." he continued, rattling off an expansive line of crimes to charge the juvenile delinquents with. Dredd came to a halt, behind a darkened visor his gaze narrowed, carefully scanning the crowd of scared, young faces.

Unrest at the opposite end of the group began to break out, murmurings getting ever so slightly rebellious, malicious whisperings about rushing the Judge circulating through the bloodied and beaten. Surely this many people could take him down with relative ease?

"Cop it!" one cowardly voice cried. That was all it took, just one scared little man with a mouth working faster than his mind. Both gangs turned away from Dredd in unison and pelted their way up the remaining alleyway, the stragglers of the group hauled to the front by the more athletic of their ranks. The lawman grunted bitterly and took a heaving step forwards, but before he could give chase, a solid lump of granite rained down from the sky. The block exploded somewhat upon impact, a fine chalky dust spreading into the air, fragments of varying size scattered about the rough pavement.

Dredd tilted back his head and looked skywards briefly, a darkened ghoul moving back from the very edge of the roof of the Van Cleef block. He turned his attention back towards the escaping junior felons, their figures getting further and further away, dissipating into the murky and swirling vapour. It wouldn't be long until they hit the perimeter of Judges surrounding the multiple exits to the maze of alleyways anyway, but the shadowy apparition upon the roof troubled Dredd more than a gaggle of spotty youths.

High upon the rooftop, a large, hulking shape heavily waddled its way towards a contraption hovering a mere three inches off the ground, the jets beneath it quietly hissing and casting a violet light onto the dull grey cement. It was coloured a violent red, curved at the edges, and a collection of small golden spheres lining the edge of this obscure mode of transport. It was some kind of sleigh. The hissing exploded into a continuous hum, the carriage slowly gaining altitude while its driver glared down at the sprawling metropolis below. The levitating machine flew off into the chill night air, the unsuspecting masses beneath going about with their daily lives oblivious to the impending danger resting right above their heads.

"Pull your vehicle over!"

The thundering revving of a mighty engine roared behind the sleigh, a bright, white light cast over the garish red monstrosity. Dredd sped up, his Lawmaster getting ever closer. "Pull over, or you will be shot down!" he spat, lip curled into a snarl. The driver of the other vehicle didn't move, not even a twitch, it just continued sitting at the controls of its flying machine. A low inhuman chuckle filled the stagnant air as hundreds of tiny red and green spheres spilled from an opening at the back of the sleigh. The spheres tumbled through the air and collided with the Lawmaster like a child had thrown a bag of marbles at it, dozens missing the mark and plummeting downwards into the street.

Warning lights flashed, a multitude of sirens wailed, and the radio began to switch itself on and off frantically in an electronic fit. Dredd knew there was something terribly wrong with his vehicle roughly a minute and a half before it started losing altitude. Quickly, he stood on the saddle of his trusty steed and leapt out into the air, arms outstretched. He grunted a throaty animalistic grunt as he managed to get a grip on the very back curve of the sleigh, wrapping himself around it tightly, one leg awkwardly flailing around as he struggled to mount the vehicle. Battling against wind resistance and gravity, the lawman triumphed and hauled himself over the edge, silently slipping the weapon at his side from his holster to his gloved palm.

Dredd looked at the assailant sitting apathetically ahead of him; it wore a deep crimson coat with a white fur trim and a matching ridiculous hat. The chinned crusader seethed silently, fluffy hats had been banned in Megacity One for well over twenty five years. He pressed the barrel of the Lawgiver up against the back of the felon's head, "Land this thing, or I plug you and land it myself". The head of the badly dressed villain jerked to the right an inch with a heavy 'clunk!' Slowly, it rolled around to face Dredd, it's metal maw wide open, two glowing red orbs for eyes, and a display of sparks spilling from every facial orifice.

"Ho-ho-ho" it said in a metallic whine.

"Grudd" Dredd sighed, "You have got to be j-"

His sentence was cut short. The robotic menace swivelled it's body around to align with its head, and in the process slamming it's outstretched claws into Dredd's ribs. He tumbled to the left, gasping for air. He raised his Lawgiver and stared at the monstrosity, intent on blowing it's rusting head clean off. Oddly enough, it stared at him back, it's eyes either sorrowful or blissfully ignorant about the incoming attack about to be unloaded on its face. Dredd decided it was simply ignorant and fired, creating yet another hole in the machine's noggin. It shot back for a moment before tilting forwards on its cylindrical base, it rolled to the left, then back to the right, then it spun clockwise for half a second singing a collection of pop songs all at once, the result of which sounding like a cat being mutilated by a very sadistic teenager who considered cutting himself a hobby.

"Ho-timer activated, charge now live-ho-democracy lives on, the Judges must die-ho" it burbled, two pieces of audio overlapping and cutting each other out.

Dredd started at the soulless metal man for a moment, it's body jerking wildly, flailing around in a strop like an irritable child. Suddenly, it stopped, it's innards whirring, a faint crackling side echoing from within its core. Like a kettle boiling, a rising screech began pouring out of it, faint distorted fragments of a sentence intertwining with the horrid scream.

"Take off sequence initiated, escape protocol 5
".

Like a firework, the robot shot upwards with a grating whizzing sound. It swirled around in the air aimlessly, heading higher, and higher, and higher still, the sparks erupting from the bullet hole lighting the ill fitting velvet jacket and hat. The ball of flame began to slow down, the mighty jet beneath it failing. It was suspended in the air for a moment, frozen in time. Finally, it began to sink downwards, steadily gaining more and more speed as it plummeted towards the city beneath it. The next few moments were a blur for Dredd as he struggled to land the sleigh. As he finally managed to steer the contraption low enough to scrape the very top of a residential block, everything around him became overwhelmingly bright. He glanced up briefly to see a ball of light where the robot once was, still hurtling towards the ground at an alarming speed.

There was an almighty bang. It rang out through every inch of Megacity One, no crevice or corner left deaf to the noise.

Heavy boots trudged through the gathering snow, the sound of children laughing and adults conversing amongst themselves about explosions and arrests filled the air. Dredd brushed the white flakes from the armour draped over his shoulders and stared upwards. Whatever type of bomb the robot was carrying was certainly unconventional, if it were a bomb at all, but what had actually happened to the machine was entirely unprecedented.

A glowing sphere floated calmly in the air by its own inherent state of non-mass, casting a white light on the city below. The shower of snow started beneath the sphere, indicating it was some kind of weather modulator, freezing the water vapour in the air to create the white cascade. Atop of a block nearby lay the manic machine's sleigh, landed awkwardly but safely by the lawman despite the explosion blinding him temporarily. Dredd sighed and looked on; it was a peaceful scene that would have melted his heart if it were not made out of the coldest stone. He turned away from the gathering crowd, pacing ahead with a sense of authority, letting his features soften once he'd strode out of view. He'd let them enjoy the snow for now, even if the luminescent orb would inevitably be shot down long before its power would fade.

Questions still hung heavy on Dredd about the demented robot, why did it edge the lump of granite from the top of the Van Cleef block? Why did it spout a message befitting a democratic protestor? Why did it claim to have a bomb when it didn't? And who in the world created it in the first place? He figured they could wait for now, other matters concerned him. Besides, it was Christmas after all.

AARGH!  I've been trying to do that crossword all morning - I keep starting to fill in an answer before realising there's too many or not enough spaces. And the crossover between 54A and 52D doesn't seem to work (If I've got 52D right!)

It's about 60% complete and I'm stumped for the time being - I may do a search of this borad later to try and track down some of the missing answers. Still it's kept me amused on another deathly quiet day at work!

Just filled out the grid and it all seems to fit, although i admit the numbers are hard to read.

Two mistakes.

2 down has and extra box
42 down should be 1990 not 1999

Nice story Christov. Think that's the first robot Santa we've had.

Almost finished Logan's crossword (I thought something was up with that 2 Down). Only stuck on 19 and 34 Across. I'll probably kick myself when I see the answers.

Surely "get whet with gene" is
Hackman
, while "the first was corrupt, the second a stickler" is
Rico
- but they need to cross at the second letter (I must admit I did want to say
Gene Vincent
at first, which would fit, but 'snot his name!)

I'm so glad that 2 down has too many boxes, as I was positive I had that right! All the other occasions where I've started filling one in that doesn't fit are because I was simply wrong!

By the way, I used to have an eccentric auntie who always finished the crossword - she'd add extra boxes if there weren't enough, colour them in if there were too many and split them in half if cross-letters didn't match, but she always completed it and would not accept that she ws doing anything wrong!

EDIT: Oh wait, I take it all back - it's not
Hackman
it's
Kingdom
! I apologise for impugning the reputation of your fine crossword!

Regarding the (well deserved) complements on the thread, I know that when I did my entry, each and every one made me really happy and made the work I'd put into it so worthwhile. That's why I've made a point of commenting on each one. So, while they can be a bit tiresome to read, they are very important!

I will be doing a new, comment-free thread on Christmas Day containing just the advent entries to be marvelled at by all!

Well we've just reached the 23rd so before I go to bed, I'll post my contribution.

I'm no artist, and not much of a writer either. However, three years ago with the help of Michael Carroll (http://www.michaelowencarroll.com/3d-dredd.htm) and Simoney Badges (http://www.simoney.co.uk/) I produced a piece of Judge Dredd merchandise which was extremely well received and which has been out of stock for the past 18 months. This is about to change. I'm extremely pleased to be able to announce that a second batch of licensed Judge Dredd badges is currently being manufactured and I am expecting delivery in mid January. The badge has been retooled and will be sold for £19.95, but until the twelfth day of Christmas, anyone who preorders from THIS LINK (http://www.termight.co.uk/dredd.php) will only be asked to pay the old price of £14.95.

The photos on the Termight Replicas website are of the original badge, but I've just received this image of the new master.

@COMMANDO FORCES The main difference is that I've got rid of the "gritty" texture inbetween the feathers. It is now only around the name.

@pauljholden Is the Prog 262 (http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=prog&page=profiles&choice=262) cover the first appearance of this Robin Smith artwork, or do you know if it had already been used (e.g. on the back cover of an annual).

@Jim_Campbell I'd be interested to see what a bullet did to this badge, but I'd want to shoot from a decent distance in case of a ricochet.

I've just measured the hole on the Robin Smith cover, and it's just over 7mm diameter if the height of the badge is 90mm.

Seriously, I'd be happy to sacrifice a badge to see what happens if it gets hit by a bullet and I think it would need to be 7.62mm at 25 metres (or possibly 50 for safety).

Honestly no idea, I always assumed the badge was a Bolland design, rather than a Robin Smith design (at a guess, Robin Smith did the cover in house, basing it on Bolland's Dredd badge, thereby saving a little money...) Certainly Bolland is the only artist to consistently draw the badge in that way (especially with the raised bits on the inner shield...)

If i'd not gone huffy and destroyed the original (better) version, this would be finished.  But I can't promise it wouldn't be rubbish.  Had to start again thanks to getting in a strop.

You'd also have seen Joe, Blackblood & Deadlock as the three kings, Happy Shrapnel as a shepherdess (his fondness for lady volg clothing you see), Mongrol & Mek-Quake as sheep (a screen in the chest of the Mekkers-sheep would have read "baaaa") and Seth the blitzspear in place of the star.  The scene would have been set outside the Piston Broke (Khronicles of Khaos) and we'd all have seen Hammerstein's lovely snowman jumper that's oddly far too small for him.  And Ro-Jaws' speech would've had ABC letters from the logo craftily shoehorned into those over-large gaps.  Ah, the joy of failure in public.  Oh well, hopefully you'll all forget about this crap I've just typed and I can finish it for NEXT year.  And maybe make it less rubbish.

You did good, Mike. I like it. Better get a move on though if you want to finish that drawing you describe for Xmas 2010.

Great funny, flip-r  mk2. The mind boggles as to how the idea came to you.

Mike, I'm chuffed we got to see some of your vision and the description sounds hilarious! I'd love to see Hammerstein in that jumper!

I'll be back with lots of treats today!

Excellent, excellent work fellas!

Righto then, I wrote to some of Tharg's artdroids and asked them to contribute to today's 'door'. A few said they would, several of them sending their pics direct to me and others saying they'll post themselves.

Here we go then:

Nick Percival:

Nick sent two amazing images, the first was this horrible Zombie Santa, yuck!

And secondly, this great promo image for his forthcoming Graphic Novel 'Legends: The Enchanted' (preview issue#0 out Jan 27th from Radical Comics folks!!)

Jon Davis-Hunt:

Jon sent this fantasticly cheeky picture of Tempest, it's ace!

Karl Richardson:

Karl sent this beautiful 'sketch' of Dredd, the talented git!

PJ Holden:

Finally our very own PJ sent this gorgeously hypnotic Anderson picture:

Ho, ho, ho! Thank you so much to those fine artists, I'm sure everyone on the board appreciates the time you've given and will join me in wishing you a Merry Christmas! Remember guys, one or two more droids may be contributing!

I'll be back later on with another little film...

And heres my final entry for the advent calender

I present to you the trailer for CANON FODDER III: beautiful chaos coming to the 2000adonline message boards in 2010

*small note due to the fact my brother ended up in hospital during the making of this it isn't as perfect as I would have loved it. The opening dialogue done by me in perticular isn't very good. Hope you enjoy the look at my character designs though*

Brilliant work, everyone!

I had a few ideas for the calendar but never got the chance to do anything with them:

1. A typical Fleetway/IPC comic Christmas street scene, with a whole lot of 2000AD characters sitting around a big table with bottles of pop with bent straws in them, wobbly jellies etc, done in a Leo Baxendale sort of style.

2. A three panel Kingdom strip; the first two panels show close ups of Gene hacking & slashing, the last revealling he is actually 'helping' Leezee unwrap her Christmas presents (the presents are totally destroyed).  Needs some way to work in a line like "Your mouth is full of mince pie."

3. An instalment of a Strontium Dog strip.  The recap reveals Johnny & Wulf have gone back in time to stop Trritterax the Time Changer (or something).  Wulf scans the night sky with binnoculars, we see a hazy dark circle. "By the Gott, Johnny!  He has managed to black out the Starlight beacon!  Without an intense light at low level those people on the ground will never find their way here!"  Alpha fires an electro flare, cut to long shot where we see three guys on camels pointing at the bright 'star'.  Alpha checks in with McNulty on the radio.  McNulty is guarding someone, but we don't see who.  Alpha asks if there have been any disturbances.  McNulty answers only a kid with a drum who threatened to wake the bairn, "so I shoved the drum up his bum."  Meanwhile, the star has allowed the three wise men to find the stable.  We see their backs as they enter, revealing a peaceful nativity scene (with McNulty in the corner).  Throwing off their robes the three wise men are revealed to be the three Stix brothers.  "Next prog: Gold, Frankinsense and Murder".

I had another idea to do with McNulty's Christmas diary ('Strontium Blogs'), but it's gone now.

Happy New Year, everybody!

Three brilliant ideas there Dash, particularly 2 & 3, I'd love to see them next year! Just think, you could have a whole year to work on them...

The unused idea lurking around my brain, which has none of the wit of Dash's, was a Torguemada's helmet Christmas tree with 'sphere-ised' boarder's avatars as the baubles.

Well, I don't know if my artistic abilities would live up to a years worth of anticipation, but at least I may learn how to spell 'frankincense' by then! (More embarassingly, I was going to call no.3 "The Jerusalem Job", forgetting for a moment that it has to be in Bethlehem!  :-[  "The Judean Job" doesn't have quite the same ring to it).

Is there another thread that shows just the pieces of work? Some of them have disappeared, such as PJ's Anderson, and I'd love to see them.  That'll teach me to be a Johnny-Come-Lately I suppose.  At least I got to see Anderson's titties though.
