Agreed. Wasn't expecting flinty on art duties - what a lovely surprise to open up the meg and find that! And a special appearance from an old favourite too.

Also loving Neil Googe's art and Tiernan Trevallion too.

It's a cracking Dredd, absolutely hilarious! The bits about Mrs Gundefson's heart had me laughing out loud as did the 'M' word.

The thing is, I was 17 when the Meg came out and I still remember reading the first issue in the back of my mates' car on the way to a piss up camping trip in the lakes, all young and care free. Now, I'm a 'dult, spending my day in meetings, bossing kids about and thinking about my mortgage... Maaaan, Al Ewing got that story spot on.

And like an idiot it's just occurred to me that Al got America Beaney, Chopper, Midnite's Children, Gunderson from Young Death and Kenny Who all in the strip, all from Meg 1 I believe?

Also, check out the dude's initials and code on the last panel, he's a frickin' genius that Ewing boy.

Great Dredd, if odd colouring: Beeny appears to have switched race, for some reason (or got a major tan—unless it's a different Beeny).

Yeah, that was a nice touch - where other writers might ahve just wrote a story around that idea, you also had this great Dult/Juve thing that not only was very MC1, but also spoke for a lot of the audience - all those teenagers who started with the Meg now mortgaged and middle aged - spot on!

1) Where's the reference to Midnite's Children?

2) What's up with the initials in the last panel??

Al & Henry Flint on Dredd: AWESOME.

Anyone know why the Flint droid is credited as "Pencils"...? The art has fairly clearly been inked as well -- is Henry mis-credited, or is there an inker missing a credit?

Other than that: cracking Meg. Really, really good stuff. The Ezquerra features have been great, and I enjoyed the strips, which were just fantastic. Special thumbs up to Mr Carroll of this very parish for his contribution to this fine periodical.

Seriously -- the last couple of Megs have been as good as the title's been in years. Top, top work.

I'm also wondering how long it'll be before Ewing gets a longer crack at Dredd. Of all the writers to arrive (and go) over the years, his Dredd is still the one that feels most 'right' (or most 'Wagner') to me.

names in the book:
David Essex, Dan Duryea, Barry Took, Dot Cotton and Glenn Beck.

How can Chopper return to the Meg and no-one mentions it!

What a cracking Megazine for Comic strips, 12 pages of Al and Flint with fanny jokes a plenty without using CLiNT type o stuff.

The Carlos interview continues, Lily Mckenzie zips along with added nudie bits !! Hondo Cit is wonderful, enough manga style to flavour it but without getting in the story telling's way,

Black Museum: a fine tale of Dreddworld with added history!

And a Coming Soon the next Chapter of Warhammer, sorry Insurrection II Huzzah!

Anderson is nuts but in a good way,

The only flaws in the wonderous gem of a Megazine is a couple of in-depth articles about TV and flims I know nothing of, and a well written letter fi some Paisley Buddy ggggr!

Still... I spoke to the wonderful Denise and have renewed my Subbie for another year, the bumper crop has done its job here at Huffmansions.

Just popping on to say its the first time I've cast eyes on Balls Brothers. It was love at first sight. There have been many comic pairings over history; Morecombe and Wise, Dean and Lewis, and Stan and Olly; Little and Large and Hale and Pace.

I now profess to finding my new favourites; Wagner and Walker. (letteres and colouring not withstanding).

Lovely place - a Chillis, a Sizzler, a Taco Bell, a Carls Jnr, a Del Taco, a Burger King, a McDonalds, a Wendys and a Mongolian BBQ King all within a literal throw of a beer bottle - maybe I did and have gone to heaven? I did read 'The Lovely Bones' on the way over so that may be the case.

If I have snuffed it or if the Golden Gate gets microwaved tomorrow a la 'The Core' (read my deinite review) please someone step up to the plate and save the letters laurels from the Huff. You all know it makes sense, even Tom.

Dredd: Shakara was good, and Zombo too. But I've just really learnt to love the Flint-Droid. Atmospheric, detailed, loads of variety in his shots, pefect anatomy and facial expressions. And a unique style to boot, his aged chopper had such a Howard Chaykin vibe to him though, and that panel perefectly some up what I say about atmosphere and facial expressions, he nails exactly what is described in the narration. Also funny as hell script.

Lilly Mackenzie: Didn't see that twist coming, some really good stroytelling. Hard to see where this is going, didn't love it as much as earlier issues but it's defintley still go me intrested.

Hondo City Justice: Didn't like this installemnt as much either, not sure why though. Maybes becuase we've seen pretty much everythign here in the frist 2 parts. Except the tiwst I guess, didn't see that coming again.

Tales From The Black Museum: The art caught my eye and it was an entertaining story, but it was sort of a non-twist.

Anderson: This was pretty nuts! That guy commiting suicide and the vid slug, wierd. The way Boo Cook shows it makes it even wierder he has very unique style, but he also makes it clear with dead on storytelling.

Articlaes: I have BSG still to watch so wont be reading the one on Caprica, I never really take to the move reviewers style, Tom Savini interview was okay. The Carlos one was superb again though. Such sappy but well deserved tributes, I agree with every word they say.

Top Thrill: Dredd

Had a nice lie-in reading this today, great Meg, really really good.

Dredd was perfect for the occasion, I loved the whole idea that someone in a juvie gang, no matter how respected, will be cast out from the tribe when they become a man. And that line about cults to Mrs Gunderson left me chuckling away in my pyjamas.

Lilly Mackenzie is getting more and more interesting as it goes on, its very different, and by that I'm not entirely sure what I mean. I like it though.

Loving Hondo City Justice, my favorite stuff in the Meg has always been when we get Judges from other parts of the globe and see how they do things. I particularly love the way that with it being set in Japan the storyline takes on all sorts of Manga/anime style turns, and the really rather nice artwork reflects that brilliantly.

Tales From The Black Museum is another constant highlight for me, and this was a particularly good one. The art was really nice and the idea of Judges gone mad in some bunker, totally unaware of the war being over was brilliant. It was almost a shame the way things ended, as I would have loved to have seen Dredd come across them on his travels at some point, as its an idea that could easily carry a longer story.

And to round it all off Anderson was great fun. I seem to remember Anderson when I was younger being particularly dark stories, with all sorts of creepiness going on, and over the last couple of years her stories are more like kooky adventures. Doesn't bother me though, although I get the impression this one had the potential to be a bit more old school if it had art by say Arthur Ranson. Boo Cook is fantastic though so I'm not grumbling.

Hondo city seems to balance gawdy manga trash comic with 2000ad storyline really well.

Dredd is loads of fun, ala Cults feed and punchline and the neo-stereotypical comic ending. It is a bit cosy, cosy nudge, point wink stuff, that makes me cringe slightly. But thats just me. Cool.

The art on Black Museum is impressive. Kind of Kev Walker crossed with Coleby. Story is nice and eerie and I do enjoy a scifi style creepshow.

And Tharg's message about strong female leads are well supported in the two heroines not being very impressed with any of the male awareness in either of the strips. Anderson looks like she's about to get crept up on from behind and Lilly's showing that guts is not the only area a woman gets her strengths from. Strong front held in the face of a potentially, intimidating humiliation

would disagree with the 'cosy, cosy nudge, point wink stuff' bit, the story reads well enough without any prior knowledge of previous strips the cosy, cosy nudge, point wink stuff is there but only if you know it, it never gets in the way of a great story.

A simply excellent Megazine top to bottom, if my only niggle is the overuse of that moire pattern in the colouring of the Anderson story (which itself might only be niggling me because was previously a little distracted by its overuse in a previous Dredd... Robbie Morrison? Set in space?) then that should be a sign of the startlingly high quality of the Meg at the moment - long may it continue.

I assumed it was a set-up for the
cult joke
, but knowing the Ewing droid he has probably spent far too long working out the reference and if he isn't planning on using it at some point he soon will be.

And the cosh renders batsons spoilers useless. Doesn't bother me as I have already read it.
Whats the connection with the names in the book?
DAVID ESSES. DAN DURYEA. BARRY TOOK, COT COTTON AND GLENN BECK.
I don't have issue I to hand so can't reference.

V

From memory, I think the names were
DAVID ESSEX, IAN DURY, BARRY TOOK AND DOT COTTON.
It didn't occur to me that there was any significance, I just assumed it was your regular celebrity block names.

Although,
Ian Dury did appear in the '95 Dredd film
.

It might just be some neurons randomly firing off (the buggers do that) but something is niggling me about
Barry Took
block. It wasn't one of the main blocks in Block Wars and I suspect there is some Megazine significance there but I can't put my finger on it (although a perusal of the early Megs might give you the answer that you seek). Given the way everything else has significance is don't this is just random and given the sheer number of block names it would be no surprise.

Then you might be interested in the Henry Flint collection going cheap in the Mongoose sale:

Dredd vs Aliens is also good if you haven't read it.

Dredd is loads of fun, ala Cults feed and punchline and the neo-stereotypical comic ending. It is a bit cosy, cosy nudge, point wink stuff, that makes me cringe slightly.

would disagree with the 'cosy, cosy nudge, point wink stuff' bit, the story reads well enough without any prior knowledge of previous strips the cosy, cosy nudge, point wink stuff is there but only if you know it, it never gets in the way of a great story.

Absolutely Huff. I were just advocating a position. Glad you picked it up, as I'd forgotten to mention how wonderful these last 3 megs have been. What a brilliant conjunction to have been a witness to.

I would like to take this chance to praise everyone involved from covers to covers, postcards included. All 3 months have been given substance, style and indepth trivia beating off the turning of green to umber, with the onset of the deathly seasons; Autumn and Winter.

Thankyou Bet Pack.

Balls Brothers was pa-rit-ty crazy. Kev Walker has some pretty good cartooning skills.

Cheers,

That is what really struck me - all the tasty cartooning going in including (what I believe to be) a lot of handdrawn SFX, those plus the dynamic layouts and the top quality art pack a real... punch. It is pity we don't see more of that these days.

Yeah, not everyone can do realism like Bryan Hitch so It's a shame so many people disregard anything stylized or cartoony. Love artists like Staurt Immonen and Timothy Green II who have the right balance. I think Simon Fraser is one of the top guys for AD aswell for the same reason.

I wish those would become part of the 2000 AD style guide. I can't stand the generic SFX, which were splattered all over the Prog at one point. Awful stuff.

The other half just read the Balls Brothers supplement in the bath. She loved it and says "Bring back the balls brothers!" Me? I read it back in the day. Re-reading it now....yeh, very good!

Bought the meg last week and only bothered to read the Charlie the Squirrel interview. Just been through a pile of megs and read "Cadet" and "Judgement Call", thinking nobody can write Dredd worth a damn but Wagner. Then read "Twenty Years to Midnight", and realised I was wrong. Al, that was brilliant. Superbly paced, hard-hitting and very funny at the same time. You maybe don't have Wagner's streak of pure evil, but there are no girls' comics do do your apprenticeship on these days. Fabulous performance by Henry as well. Just the set of Jimmie's mouth and his patchy stubble are so completely right. Chopper as a chat show guest looks subtly broken. Nobody can draw wee America like Colin MacNeil though, so good decision to keep her helmet on.

I'll get round to reading the rest of the mag at some point.

Right. Decided to FINALLY jump on as a result of the new Megacast.... And reckoned the 20th anniversary Meg was a good place to start. One purchase from Clickwheel later and I have to say I was VERY impressed. Particularly the Ewing/Flint Dredd. Don't want to just repeat what's been said before, but let's put it this way... "Roll on Meg 303!" :D

While 'tidying' my comics heap, I started reading The Balls Brothers free GN.  I thought I'd read it all before, in fact I thought I'd read this collection before, but apparently not.  The second story was running in the Prog when I returned from my Long Walk at the end of the 90's, and I liked it well enough for the art, but couldn't really see the point.

Reading it all together last night, I thought it was a little gem of a strip - funny throughout and with some really outstanding art.  I particularly enjoyed the "DiggleCo Human Waste Management" shit-filled lorry.  I can see why there wasn't any more (what else could you do with the characters?), but it definitely ranks as one of 2000AD's better humour strips.

Hah!  I resemble that implication.

Nah, I'm a actually a big fan of many of the funny strips:  Sooner or Later, Lobster Random, Bonjo from Beyond the Stars, Droid Life, all tickle my receptors.  I'd agree that pure humour a very hard thing to get right in 2000AD, but when it works it's magic.

Have to say I was really pleasantly surprised with Balls Brothers! I was expecting something I wouldn't even finish, but instead I went through in one go! Wish they were all like that in fact!
