Greetings Squaxx. Welcome to the latest incarnation of the Galaxy's Greatest Internet Forum Based Art Competition. It's time to buckle on those brain boosters and initialise your creative subroutines. Crack open a new pack of Crayola and get an adult to tie up the back of your art apron. We're going back, way back, to childhood and the realms of the imagination.
The last comp saw the debut of a fresh faced neophyte of the forum, Mr. David Frankum, who swept all before him in what was a seriously high quality field. As behooves his status of reigning champeen, he gets to choose the subject this time round. We all remember the books of our childhoods, and it's a good thing too. Because David has gone with this...
QuoteA Children's book adaptation of 2000 ad.
Choose a well known children's book and adapt it to a 2000ad story or character. You could draw the artwork in the style of a certain children's book or pick a scene in a children's book and change it to suit the 2000 ad universe. Anything goes... the sky's the limit.
I think that is fairly clear. So, you want "The Very Hungry Klegg", you go for it! "Noddy and Big Ears: SD Agents", that is also fine. Cast your minds back or rifle through your kids bookshelves, there's a huge range of inspiration in children's fiction.
The comp will run till
8pm Monday the 23rd of May.
Don't eat the crayons.

And the comp reminds me of thishttp://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,29219.msg535904.html#msg535904 (http://www.2000adonline.com/forum/index.php/topic,29219.msg535904.html#msg535904), where a lot of people much better than me did a lot of really good piccies.
I did think of that Doc, and Mike Carrol's excellent Mr.Dredd. Just a reminder that this is a new comp, so new entries please.
I've got one half decent idea so far. Can't wait to see what people come up with.
I have an idea for this so I'm afraid my crap efforts will probably be returning to the comp.

Me too, but the sun is too tempting today to sit indoors and draw.....to the beach! ;)
I've been racking my brain about this one as the scope is enormous. But I think I've just has a 'Eureka' moment! Fingers crossed!!
I have an idea. Just need to find the time...
Even I have an idea for this one.
Now to turn the idea into reality 8-?
This should be interesting; I had better get my thinking cap on and try raising my game.

System suggested I add the mighty mutie fish which I did by ,ahem, drawing around a CD disc.It was originally just going to be a submarine and titles.

New Pen for me Wacom! So without further ado here's my entry for the comp.
:o excellent!
Hi,
Glad to see that you're all excited about the new competition. I was a bit worried at first about my idea but I'm delighted by the response. Looking forward to seeing your take on a 2000ad/ Children's book cross over.
Zarjazzer: That's awesome. One of my all time favourite books. Love it.
I am the system: Cracking piece of drawing. A lovely play on words. "My Grandma, what a big hole in the head you have" :)
Well done.
Looking forward to seeing everyone else's.
All the best.
Those are both fantastic. Zarjazzer, I would actually read that if Tharg was to commision it! :P

My CD disc is at the ready! :D Cheers! i was originally going to try a version of Moby Dick but it would have been way beyond my very meagre talent. Wouldn't be a bad tale maybe with sunken treasures, insane crew, cthulhu style beasties and irradiated undead zombie pirates.(So we can poke fun at Pirates of the Caribbean :))
David Frankum glad you like it and I hope you'll be entering this comp too.I think it's a cool idea with lots of scope for anyone,(even me) to have a go.
IATS YES :D

Couldn't even spell my own name right, speaks volumes regarding my lettering ability eh?
Back then, of course, let
tering was done by hand AND the comics were made out of metal...made to last. AND they were clockwork, none of this electric nonsense you have these days...AND another thing...blah, blah, blah, blah...Really enjoying the entries so far - KEEP 'EM COMING!
QuoteGUILTY:
He's far too modest, with out Jake, Rufus and Grainne there wouldnt have been a '79.
Logan- have you ever thought about putting out pdf's of those comics. There would be some very interested folk out there these days.

That's a shame Jake, maybe next time.
Love the Dredd! Was it for anything specific or just something awesome for your own amusement. It can't just be me that thinks that it's easily a Prog worthy depiction of Old Chinny Chinface.
Just for fun - haven't done any 'old skool' black and white stuff for years, just wanted to see if I still could.

I still say lets finish Hestons' first 'epic' sometime, WR, it had some real laughs in there... Whatever happened to that artist Henry Flint!?
JTPegg - Would you like to draw my entry for me? That is one hell of an image. I don't wish to sound disrespectful towards anyone but that is one of the best pieces of comic artwork I have ever seen. I've just been sitting here for ages staring at it. Fantastic!
Bolt -01 - Ha Ha! Brilliant. Really made me chuckle. Part of the Mega- City One education curriculum. I love Mean Machines really happy face.
I have got my idea for this project all sketched out. I am though really busy- in a good way. If I remain on course with my deadlines I'll draw it up and post it. Some really neat ideas out there. Wicked! Must crack on...
... but first I'm going to stare at JTPegg's Dredd for a few more hours...
David - your stuff ROCKS, do your own! I suspect I'm not the only one looking forward to it...
Hit those deadlines... HARD!

If I knew how to convert the two issues then Id have no problem with them being out there.

I'd love to do Heston #3, it was a great idea. Still think that a Harry Heston Special would be great, the first two episodes plus a new installment and extras.

You could, for example, make a CBZ very easily - just make sure the pages are number 01-onwards, zip it and change the extension to CBZ. Something like Calibre will allow you to convert it to a PDF. Or dropbox it to me and I'll sort it out.

Wish we'd started a new thread now.
Bristol it is- I'm looking forward to that. And start a new thread when you've something to announce- Thread drift is a hallmark of this place.
Cracking entries so far - IATS, Bolt-01 and JT - that Dredd is, as Dave H says - pretty mych comics perfection. a Jaw dropping Dredd.
Who knows, I may even have a bash myself this time.
I know it's still off topic, but I have to say just read those Harry Heston's and was seriously impressed. The reveal at the end of ep1 would be classic 2000ad if it was official.
Love to see this back.
Dunk!
Brilliant stuff- "Nothing impresses the Ape Judge".
There is now a thread devoted to the hopeful resurgence of 'Class of '79' and 'Harry Heston'. It can be found at the link below. Enjoy!

Artwork done... Hmmm... can't remember how to put it on... Photobucket... I recall it had to be a certain width, or am I making that up? Cut and paste a http address? Help! I've got a mind like a Goldfish :-[
Resize the image in photobucket to whatever size you think appropriate David. Then, use the img tags (it's the picture symbol below the B for bold on your post reply page). So you use the share window you can reach by hovering your cursor over the image in your photobucket album and drag the Direct Link in between the img tags on the post you're making here.
Oh, hang on. If you're just trying to get it onto photobucket then hit "upload now" and then the green "select images and video" button thing and then select the file from your own computer. Then, do all the malarkey in the last post.
Wicked! Many thanks. Will put it on tomorrow. Thanks again :D

Brilliant entries but I have a plan that'll blow these out of the water!!
Anyone up for a 4 page entry?* Guaranteed to win and get you sex with ladies (or the gender of your choice, can't guarantee species though as I'm banned from Britain's zoos after an unfortunate gorilla chloroforming incident). It'd need a cartoony style.
* One the FQP chaps might recognise - one that so stunning it made them shuffle their feet and pretend to reading a good book when I mentioned, an idea so awesome they questioned my sanity because it must have come from the mind of a deranged genius!! You will laugh, you will weep and you will wonder if you should have asked for a nookie deposit up front (or round the back if that is your cup of tea).
PS: Might not be 4 pages, I'd need to find my notes - it could be 3, just with the awesome power of 4.
PPS: We might actually be able to boil it down to one image I suppose, if pushed. It is something we could negotiate once you've seen the idea.
PPPS: It has a theme tune.
I know these art comps are supposed to be 1 pagers, but I think multi-pagers would actually be a good idea for this particular prog, what with being a 2000 AD take on children's stories, etc. The Ginberbread Dredd story being a good example.
Not that a strip can't be one page, but it would be rather limiting.
Hmmm, multi pagers in the art comp would be fine by me, but if any one thinks it should be a single image or page make yourself heard. As I say, all good as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry, the last word should be 'competition.' rather than 'prog'. Trust me to get two completely different words mixed up.
I am happy for the comp to be multi pages etc. Anything goes :)
Saying that, when I was drawing my entry I fancied drawing the whole story- replacing the bear with Nemesis.
Mangamax edging it for me...only because I have fond memories of 'Asterix In Britain' from my youth  Those poor Pirates

Doesn't necessarily have to be in the art comp. If people have projects that they're working on that don't fit in the comp or some other thread then just start a new thread (Creative Common is good for that sort of thing) or direct us to your blog or whatever. We're all comic fans and love to see what people are up to.

Toni - Superb! Absolute genius! You've hit the nail right on the head there. Fan- bloody- tastic! :D Since I was a kid, I've loved Eric Carle's style and you've pulled it off brilliantly. Not an easy style to re create. Well done, sir.

I'm actually very surprised (and pleased) at how these turned out. I'm not a great drawer but when I do draw it's on paper. I had a raft of ideas for the comp but as I don't have a scanner (or, before yesterday, a photobucket account) I thought I'd need some help. As no one responded I started roughing some ideas out in Paint to show some theoretical eventual volunteer what I was thinking of, but they turned out much better than expected. Sadly, I keep coming back here to look at them!
I was going to add an explanation just in case, but I thought it was just more wittering on about myself and didn't bother. I still have a few more ideas up my sleeve so I thought it wouldn't matter if I still got an approach after all.
There are some fantastic entries this time round. I wish I had the time to do up my idea - someone draw a Where's Wally Squad picture for me!
Ha ha! That woulda been brilliant Davey!

That's meant to be Otto Sump but it looks more like Two-face so I'm going to pretend it's some random Sump clinic employee.
Actually, that would work better if it said "SUMPS Product Testing Lab" and the duck was restrained on a table with Otto looming over him.
As is pretty obvious, I didn't put a huge amount of time into this one...

That's fantastic Mike. I love how you've done it as one of those pillowy-type books. Anf you say you didn't put much time into it!
I had a couple of similar ideas...

Rattlestein isn't finished but my drawing doesn't get too much better than this anyhow!

OK chaps, here my entry (Kerrin, can you class this as a single entry and not a multiple one?)
I wish History was taught like this when I was at school. And probably the funnies program on TV... Horrible Histories.
So I give you not just a single book, but a whole frickin series.... Frightful Futures!! I could have gone on and on with Dastardly Droids, Galactic Gladiators, Barmy Berserkers , etc etc.

Awesome effort folks! Some truly wonderful pieces this time. Choosing a top three out of this lot will be a delightfully difficult task.
Voting thread long soon. More than likely tomorrow evening.
Cheers!
