Title: City of Dredd - OUT NOW!
Post by: John Caliber on 16 May, 2011, 08:58:37 PM
CITY OF DREDD is now ON SALE in two hyper-powered formats:

Paperback:
http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/city-of-dredd/15735291

Download:
http://www.lulu.com/product/file-download/city-of-dredd/15735292

If members wish to promote it, here's the 'Press Release':

CITY OF DREDD is an unofficial guide to all the official Mega-City One locations to have ever featured in the vast JUDGE DREDD mythology and will overload the 'thrill-receptors' of even the most hard-core 'Dreddhead! In the year 2133AD, in the tumultuous decades after the GREAT ATOMIC WAR, the Earth's nations have been left devastated, falling into living nightmares where only the most brutal and phantasmagoric survive. The old world governments, fearful and corrupted, have been replaced by the JUDGES, an elite organisation part law-enforcer, part army, who rule with an iron fist. The Judges are more dangerous than the toughest criminal, alien invader or rampaging mutant horde, because only they have the LAW on their side! Among their number, one man with a resolve tougher than rockcrete has through the years of slaughter exemplified the very best and the worst that Mankind can offer. He is the ultimate law enforcer, the living legend that is JUDGE DREDD!

And the cover art:

There's no chance you (or Lulu) will take children in exchange?  Apparently I have to buy party food and birthday presents instead of City of Dredd this month.  Grrrrrr.

Very pleased to see today arrive! I have the pdf and already enjoying it!!

I have the earluer incarbations too, the three volume pdf Streets of MC1. That has already been a huge help in plitting fir Play Dredd. As has tge Progology. I'll be using this quite a bit throughout the year.

Banging in an order for the paperback too. Won't be actually using that as much as the pdf. But I will enjoy carefully browsing it.

And for anyone unable to order it today, it'll still be available tomorrow, next week, next month, etc. You won't be disappounted with it, well unless you don't like having loads of facts at your fingertips!

I can sell you a copy at a reduced price? I got a batch at a discount. I can do you one for £15 (incl. second class postage)? I don't have any physical copies - am waiting for Lulu to dispatch. It's not something I can repeat indefinitely, before the rest of you start sending begging letters.  :)

John, that's very generous of you, and many thanks, but hardly in your own best interests!  I'll hopefully have some more money by June, and I'll buy a copy the proper way then.  That, one hopes, is the beauty of POD - no fear of missing the boat.  Incidentally, I've had nothing but positive experiences with Lulu, and I'm really looking forward to this!

Yeah, i should add to that- if anyone's looking at this and is nervous about print on demand, or lulu, don't be. Ive ordered several things from them and have been blown away by the quality. In many ways the books have been superior to what's in the shops. They havent, for instance, shed all their pages after opening (hello IDW's trade collection of deadworld!). Im itching to order this, john, and it'll be the first thing i buy come payday.

Now get to work on 'Universe of Strontium Dog'. Come on, chop chop.

I've not had any personal experience with POD, so the previous comments do help calm my nerves somewhat. The production system leaves something to be desired, however. The dimensions they give for the cover and spine width are incorrect, which meant making over a dozen uploads (twenty minutes each time) of the cover art, nudging it back and forwards, to correctly align the spine (which contains text and a continuation of the generic megalopolis skyline).

Ordered it last night!

On the subject of Lulu, I bought TV expert Andrew Pixley's book on the Goodies (http://www.networkdvd.net/product_info.php?cPath=90&products_id=1260) last year.  It has similar dimensions to your book and is a whopping 602 pages.  It arrived with no problems and looks great.

My copy has arrived this afternoon. It looks better than I hoped for, and enjoys a top rate printing job, glossy cover, pin sharp text, adequate binding and decent interior paper. It's pretty heavy which is comforting. A second order, a batch of copies for my assistant Ivan Noel and the Nerve Centre has been shipped this afternoon. I'd assume other customers will see their copies dispatched early next week. Paying £6.99 shipping ensures a 'next day' delivery (at least mine did).

I'm a bit intimidated by the size of the book. I'm glad I didn't have a psi-flash of how big the finished article would be when I commenced work in April 2009, or else I'd have run in circles screaming before hastily undergoing a lobotomy by way of a screening of The Phantom Menace.

John, I won't worry about answering the questions you asked me about Lulu as you've now got your own answer first-hand.

The photos look fantastic.  I know the writers will continue to invent their own street and block names forevermore, but I can imagine this being used as an in-house reference (to a degree).  I'm sure no one has a really firm idea of the MC1 boundaries or sector zoning, so to have something concrete they can look at will probably help define things, especially if there's a free one knocking about the office.  It certainly puts the "13 volume" MC1 Archive to shame.

Looking at the photos made me think about the book more, and raised a few questions in my mind.

Did you ever find instances where a block name had been used more than once, independantly of each other?  I suppose if they were contradictory (e.g. a Ronnie Reagan block existing in one story after it had been destroyed in another) it would be easy to assume they were in different sectors, or rebuilt, etc.

Are you considering whether to supplement the book in future?  If so, do you think you would simply issue PDF addendums, or would you revise the book?

Also, does BEYOND THE CITY OF DREDD simply cover locations on Earth (and in the sky, and on the moon) or does it cover other planets etc as well?  I recall you mentioning space locations somewhere but I couldn't find the reference.  I imagine non-Earth locations would be too few to require a book of their own (though I'm sure someone will prove me wrong).

Will BEYOND THE CITY... include any maps?  I'd particularly love to see a double page Cursed Earth map showing key townships and perhaps the famous route to MC2.  I think an improved world map would also be welcome.

Yes, there were a new duplications. Some have been merged because neither had been locked down in a specific area of the city. Some share the same name, but have entirely different functions (multiple 'Jungle's, 'Maze's, etc). Some locations are documented as having been destroyed, but reappear later miraculously restored. The latter I suggested had simply been repaired.

QuoteAre you considering whether to supplement the book in future?  If so, do you think you would simply issue PDF addendums, or would you revise the book?

There is a parallel PDF-only version of CITY OF DREDD that continues to be updated every week, as new material is made available. Free copies go out to my colleagues on the PLAY DREDD group who help me run the roleplaying games, which is mainly why CITY OF DREDD came into being. The Directory and Progology chapters of CoD are freely available from the PLAY DREDD website and will continue to be updated. I could always revise the paperback in a couple of years. It depends how many I sell as to how enthusiastic I can get about going through another round of hellish edits. It really is a book too large for one man to proof.

QuoteAlso, does BEYOND THE CITY OF DREDD simply cover locations on Earth (and in the sky, and on the moon) or does it cover other planets etc as well?  I recall you mentioning space locations somewhere but I couldn't find the reference.

If it's outside MC1's wall, it will feature in the sequel paperback, including all Earth locations, outer space and otherdimensions.

QuoteWill BEYOND THE CITY... include any maps?  I'd particularly love to see a double page Cursed Earth map showing key townships and perhaps the famous route to MC2.  I think an improved world map would also be welcome.

Yes, there will be a few maps including a world map and one of the Cursed Earth. I know some locations are locales in name only, with no clue as to where they should be sited on a map. I did experience a technical glitch with the city map in CITY OF DREDD, which resulted in it being of a smaller resolution than I would have liked. The text however is pin sharp and the map itself is acceptable, after I resampled it. The maps for BTCoD will look different, concerned as they are with a greater density of locations.

I was stunned by the photos, that is one eye-catching tome.

I've seen early versions of Beyond, being a member of Play Dredd and that is one book I am really looking forward to. I think it is better than CoD, and CoD is a must have for my MC1 set games.

In a 'distance from Earth' style it wouldn't be that challenging, though it'd almost all be estimated beyond the Moon and Mars I guess.  But a literal map, rather challenging.

Planar map, sure why not, no one can say you are wrong...

I ordered five copies last week and noticed some slight shifting of the cover art, which appears to be a variation caused during the guilotining process. Sometimes the cover is a few milimetres lower, others the same distance shifted sideways. Nothing major. I've seen it happen all the time with books from the big publishers.

I would be obliged if customers could post reviews up on Lulu concerning CITY OF DREDD?

If any of you have blogs concerning 2000AD-themed products, you're welcome to point some heads towards the book's location - every little really does help the cult of Judge Dredd:

My PLAY DREDD thread: http://excoboard.com/PlayDredd/148346/1784060 has a copy of the back cover text at the top of the page, and a small cover graphic. For better quality photos of the finished item, there are photos at the bottom of the thread of the finished product 'in hand'. You are welcome to copy them for advertisement purposes.

Starting to read through this and as usual its excellent! make sure you buy a copy.  :D

Although I do have a couple of questions..................

On the Cover the Statue of Liberty is (more or less) as it is today, wasn't it shown in one Dredd story that the Judge Statue (or City Hall???) was built towering over the Statue of Liberty? I seem to remember it being drawn by either Colin MacNeil or Ron Smith (although I'm probably wrong on that front as well!  :P)

Secondly in the Digits section it mentions 3119nd Street and then talks about 3112nd street, I'm guessing its a printing typo 9nd as opposed to 2nd.

Sorry to be a nit picker.......  :(

Still its a great piece or work and a credit to all involved.
Title: Re: City of Dredd - OUT NOW!
Post by: John Caliber on 28 May, 2011, 05:54:14 PM
The cover's a generic future New York, hence the Statue of Liberty stands alone. It's a suggestion of MC1 for copyright reasons rather than an attempt to be accurate.

There will be a few typos, as it's a very big book - actually too large a book - for one man to edit. It's seen several drafts and umpteen proofs over two years, but mistakes always get through during production and post-production. You just have to balance off the typos against the book's overall value which is infinitely greater.

However, keep notifying me of typos as I can make changes to the master file for an update one day.

I think that's the intended audience!

Presume the absence of recognisable Judgiana on the cover is copyright/IP related - I think the solution adopted is very elegant, the juxtaposition of Lady Liberty and the vast MegaCity evoking pretty much just one thing, while not being that thing.  Far better than most of the 'unofficial' guides to various genre properties, which usually sport generic spacecraft or starfields.

EDIT:  Aaargh, redundant.

So is it ok to point stuff out in this method or would it better / politer / nicer to send updates direct?

And I totally agree with a book this size there must be soooooo much to try to sort out, great value for money as it will take ages to read!  :D

I'm fine with any means of conveying typos to me, although it may be better for the thread to e-mail them or it becomes a drag for other boarders to scroll through.

Having just looked at the 3119 Street entry, the title's correct and the '3112' in the body incorrect. I've also removed the 'nd', 'rd' and 'st' suffixes from the street names with four or more digits to tidy them up.

And I totally agree with a book this size there must be soooooo much to try to sort out, great value for money as it will take ages to read!  :D

I worked on the book for two years and every time I revisit it, I have no memory of 80% of the contents so it'll likely keep me reading foreverrrrrrr....

Totally geekish question: Wagner has on occasion indulged in a spot of cross-continuity, i.e. HARLEM HEROES and STRONTIUM DOG. I presume said occasions are referenced?

Locations where Dredd and crossover characters met are listed. References to locales unique to earlier timelines (Gotham City) are present, but not afforded standalone entries as large components of those stories are whimsy rather than official Dreddworld continuity.

I will be issuing a high-resolution, full colour PDF-only version of CITY OF DREDD priced £10 (free postage to UK only - overseas P&P will incur a small charge) when the sequel paperback BEYOND CITY OF DREDD is published in a few weeks. The CoD PDF is the entire book, updated to include the latest Dredd stories, and contains corrected errata. The city map will also be in full colour, redrawn at a higher resolution. This PDF will be available only by post, supplied on a CD-ROM, in addition to some extra PDF freebies. More details at the appropriate time.

Reading between the lines, it appears that CITY OF DREDD'S POD Lulu.com is having admin or possibly financial problems which is making its users worried. I'm therefore cancelling my account with them on 31 July before I suffer losses due to marketing agreement I have paid for which they have not yet initiated. This will mean that CoD will no longer be available in paperback format, which is actually timely since it's turning out to be more profitable to offer it solely as a PDF, sold privately from my home address. I'm assuming that most of you who want the paperback already have it, but it's fair to give you notice that I will be taking it out of circulation. Thanks for your attention!

Nooooo!  I've been saving my PayPal pennies to order a hard copy and I'm nearly there!  If I place an order next week do you think it will happen before you pull out?

That said, this sounds like a right mess.  Sorry to see such a great project get messed around like this.

I can order a few copies myself to hold in stock; that way, you can order directly from me for the same price and be assured of a copy dispatched within 24 working hours of receipt of payment (if by Paypal; cheques and money orders are accepted, although the former requires a few days to clear). Let me know and I'll get my bulk order placed ASAP. Nobody's under an obligation to buy immediately just because I'm making this purchase.

Before I forget (if I haven't already mentioned it): anybody who has already purchased a copy of either the paperback or PDF of CITY OF DREDD (and can provide proof of this ... not sure exactly how just yet), is automatically entitled to a FREE PDF of the full colour, fully-updated PDF edition of CITY OF DREDD, due out in a few weeks.

Common sense has prevailed this morning (phew). I won't be stocking any copies of the paperback and risk losing even more money. I advise anybody wanting to buy a copy of the CoD paperback to place an order before Sunday 24 July. I assume that Lulu will - by the time I request to withdraw the book from circulation on 31 July - refund orders that they are not able to fulfill in time. Their POD processing operations seem to be functioning formally. It's one of those businesses that have their priorities backwards - they can happily print and profit from books, but serve the actual book authors offhandedly.

I wonder - if customers of the forthcoming PDF colour version were to wish to print it out at their local copyshop - if it would work out chaper than via an online POD service? I was quoted around £90 (!!!!) to print one copy of CoD in colour by Lulu.com.

Not likely to be any more hardcopies, James, but future PDF versions will be of a high, press-quality resolution, so customers can choose to take the file to a digital printshop.

John, what does that mean for BEYOND THE CITY...?  Is it likely to be PDF only?

I know they date, but I'd still prefer a physical copy on the shelf.
Title: Re: City of Dredd - OUT NOW!

Yes, BEYOND CITY OF DREDD is PDF-only. Having to deal with Lulu.com has been a hassle too far. I've also suffered from not being able to publicise CITY OF DREDD because of ill health, so hardly anybody even knows it exists. No sense going through the same degree of disappointment with the sequel.

On a positive note, pdfs allow me to produce a much better-looking package, and to publish larger world/regional maps in full colour. Being high resolution files, the PDFs can be printed at a copyshop if readers wish to do so. Because they are primarily research documents, pdfs for me are entirely superior, since I can find all the information I want in seconds, going straight to the relevent entries, instead of spending hours flipping pages.

The 'cut-off' date's just a recommendation in case somebody for example decides to buy a copy on Thursday-Friday next week, probably too late for Lulu to process. I've no doubt they'll refund any unfilfilled orders. There's a probability of still being able to makes purchases that will be completed this coming Mon-Tuesday.

I still reckon you should get in touch with Tharg's minions and try to get this done with them. Just looking at that one book and the amount of work you put into it I'm sure they would at least listen to what you could do for them and more importantly us the fans :D

The reason the Mongoose series failed (if it has failed) is because of all the mistakes, half hearted work and design of the series, in my opinion!
Title: Re: City of Dredd - OUT NOW!
Post by: John Caliber on 24 July, 2011, 05:06:10 AM
I approached Rebellion about publishing CITY OF DREDD, but they declined to be involved, because of the project's likely small sales figures not making it viable for them - which I agree with to an extent, but I believe it has legs as a licensed product produced by an outside agent such as myself who genuinely cares about the material. They declined to publicise CITY OF DREDD in 2000AD (I suggested offering some copies as competition prizes) because of its unofficial status. A Catch 22 situation. C'est la vie  ;)

However, the non-profit PDFs I produce can contain all the illustrations I fancy which I draw myself (nothing scanned from the official materials, however - this is my own decision), so it's an odd situation to be in! My heart really is in PDFs and eBooks, an area that 2000AD should be pushing hard towards. I had a latter featured in a fairly recent issue of 2000AD about making digital progs available at the same time as hardcopies, which only revealed what I suspected, that digital versions are being held back deliberately. I believe this is going to prove unhealthy for the 2000AD brand, especially now as the major publishers are doing exactly the opposite. This is not intended to be a 'go' at 2000AD, just reinforcing my own justification for going the electronic publishing route - it's also a hell of a lot cheaper and profitable per unit for smaller publishers like myself.

BEYOND CITY OF DREDD won't appear in paperback because of the unsatifsfactory ratio between large hassle of production and very small sales, and also I would have to produce naff b/w maps of a small size as opposed to full colour PDFs separate from the book which can be any size (they will be A3 or smaller, and can easily be printed out by your local copyshop - just give them the disc and they can do the job in minutes). Both forthcoming editions of CoD and BCoD will have two PDF versions - colour and b/w, the latter if customers wish to print them out relatively more cheaply. The maps will only be available in colour.

After this, other than updates now and then for the aforementioned PDFs (another adventage of the freedom of digital media), I will be writing and illustrating 'fanfic' Dredd materials which will be a real treat for Dreddheads. Unofficial and non-profit, sadly, but it's a case where a love of the material - for the moment - eclipses financial aspiration.

Title: Beyond City of Dredd Update
Post by: John Caliber on 25 July, 2011, 10:51:05 AM
BEYOND CITY OF DREDD (pdf) is nearing completion, so I dare risk announcing it will be published, a month ahead of schedule, sometime in August. I'll start a separate thread once it's completed. It will be priced £6.95, plus postage & packing. Should include a disc/plastic sleeve, and OPTIONAL custom disc label for an additional £0.75. It will feature two PDFs (Dreddworld and Dredd in Space) and separate world/regional maps.

Although I loved checking if there had ever been a Rutger Hauer block (there had) and lamented the (so far) lack of a MC1 Bosco Baracus block via City of Dredd, I am particularly drawn to the Cursed Earth stuff.  I didnt know that the "Space" book was due out at the same time, thats great news too.

I am looking forward to the release.

Personally, I prefer having cityblocks named after real people as opposed to their fictional aliases. I made a boo-boo by breaking this rule and naming a spaceport after Flash Gordon in an ancient and crappy RPG book; I took the liberty of excluding it from CITY OF DREDD. I don't imagine it's a deliberate omission anybody will weep over.

One of my favourites is Gil Gerard Memorial Spaceport, it still give me a puerile smirk whenever I read it.

Am really bummed not to have been reading this thread and only now seeing the print copy was pulled - would have loved it. Fraid I'm just not a pdf man (maybe when I get something thats easier to read pdfs on).

Also REALLY think Rebellion are missing out on this when marketing comes for the Dredd movie - look at how many books were available for Watchmen - the local waterstones was over-run with 'Art of' 'Guide to..' etc. A movie-tie-in City of Dredd with lots of Retro appeal and old artwork would surely sell to people who remember buying the prog in their teenage days.

Certainly, CITY OF DREDD would add additional 'brand awareness' to the shelves when the movie comes out. It would benefit from a new graphic design by a more able designer to give it zip.

Yes, lots of possibilities

The b/w versions supplied on the discs along with the 'full-featured' editions allow for cheaper printing; they can then be thermal bound by a copyshop. I have a thermal binder in the loft - I used to bind all the Dredd comic strips torn from 2000AD and the Megazine.

Good stuff! I was going to send it second class, but apparently First Class was the only option for its size/weight. It was then I discovered that Post Offices in the same area charge differently for exactly the same weight and size of parcels... a lucky dip whichever happens to charge the least on the day.

CITY OF DREDD, as scheduled, went out of print yesterday.

Updates on the PDF-only CITY OF DREDD and BEYOND CITY OF DREDD;

City of Dredd
The next edition has been moved to March 2012, a teeny-tiny degree closer to the DREDD 3D movie release date. It also gives me a much-need break from the project, which has been occupying my time since April 2009.

Beyond City of Dredd
I've completed several drafts of the manuscript, but I'm not satisfied with the end result. The problem arose when I began drawing the maps and found many irritating voids and questions concerning geopolitical relations between the world city-states. I've assigned a new release date of December 2011.
