Hi all,
I was wondering if there are others out there planning to take a shot at this ?
http://thoughtbubblefestival.com/events/2000ad-portfolio-competition/ (http://thoughtbubblefestival.com/events/2000ad-portfolio-competition/)
Yeah, I was hoping to... if time allows....
Hi Jon,
Saw your recent work you defo should :) I'm also tempted but I'm gauging my time now. I owe it to my younger self to give it a shot. I thought this board would be heaving with entries in progress.
Heh, it probably is. Maybe it's not the canny thing to mention it? ;)
I know what you mean, though. I really need to tick "get published in the comic that's partly but significantly responsible for how things turned out for me" off the to-do list.
I like your stuff a lot, I hope you can find the time.
I missed out on it last year because I found out about it too late. Know about it well in advance this year, but I'm unlikely to be able to make a start until October. Still, after a few small press offerings and some forum competitions, four pages isn't quite the daunting task it once was... I hope...
All the best, anyway. No doubt see you in Leeds. :)
LOL

Same boat for me really. I wanted to do comics, studied classical animation, got in game development ....
I kinda got side tracked. I only saw this years announcement thanks to twitter.
Hopefully see you there then :)
I'm going to give it a go. It's a good choice of script as in that it's quite challenging. Most of the action happens in one room (which has to be consistent) and there's a lot design involved. Also, a lot of talking (lizard men) heads to keep interesting.
Good luck with it!
Dan
Hi Dan,
All valid points and my first thoughts too. Nothing like a challenge to sharpen up the skills :P I'll post work up once I'm happy to show it.
Hi,everyone...I'll be taking part of it,working on this script right now and it's got lots of fun stuff to draw. Great oportunity to get in the prog(for the luckiest bastard of all) but also great oportunity of learning once we'll be queuing with a bunch of blokes and gals with different approache on the same stuff, that's really cool.
Good luck folks!!

Good luck Bruno, you kick serious arse!

Thanks Owen....I'm not sure if I'm mastering the art of ass kicking,I'm able to slap a few butts though.
I'm really hoping to see a few of these entries. Bruno would be a good match for this, too.

So here it comes, Bolt...I could find only a single scene from the original though. I have no idea how it looks like...perhaps better this way...

YES. BRUNO STAHL FOR KING OF THE UNIVERSE.
Cheers,Crazyfox, but leave this king thang for the Camerons and Liefelds,I always dreamed of be an art droid...or a replicant, whatever comes first. :)
Aw, man, I really have to get started on this....
Nice work!
Wow, I've skimmed this thread a few times and missed that picture post from Bruno. Looks bloody great, that. Wish I could see it clearer,though....hint, hint. :P
Solid work Bruno, the story was in prog 1711. I had 2 shots similar on page one. Will consider revising these.

Cheers,I guess I won't search out for it,probably Tharg wants to see a different approach on the script so better not to know how Carpenter dealt with it.

In the end some panels of the script are so specific it's hard not to be totally different. My thinking at the moment is what's best for the story. If it happens to be similar then that's fine. It won't be a case of "copying" as I'm thinking through it all and have a different design sensability to Carpenter so it'll be fine.
It's the usual story of getting 100 artists to draw 100 horse. You get 100 different horses but they're all horses :)
I shall also have a go at this one - it's just too awesome a prize not to.
I don't want to give too much away of course but here's a couple of my fave panels from page 3:
Heh, had forgotten about this thread. Getting close now, I guess.
There's a good chance I won't make it cos my game's Alpha-ing on the same weekend, but here's a page anyway...

Indeed. There's a healthy dollop of Dermot Power in that arm in the final panel, too, if'n yer askin' me...
Cheers

The colour lighting work in that is breathtakingly good, Jon - gives a great sense of depth, just like in those early Higgins colour stories. Looking around for a clapping smiley...
Seeing that made me glad that I didn't waste my time entering! Do think that looks a wee bit too much like a judge's arm, though. Odd how such a small detail can jar. Really like the flashback effect.

Uh, yeah. The colour, you mean? It's more to do with my inability to use Adobe colour profiles properly. Or....yeah, that's what I meant to do!

So, the love child of John Higgins and Dermot Power. I'd heard the rumours, of course...
All similarities are unintentional, but years of assimilation and influence have to go somewhere. My trajectory as an 'artist' can be traced more or less directly from Star Wars, 2000 AD and that booklet that came with Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

Pfh! I don't think it would be a waste of time. For example, I get to claim the tax back on the whole trip to Leeds, should I make it.
I know what you mean about the arm, now that you single it out. If only that were the worst - or only - mistake...
*But it's just a list, really.
Lovely stuff Jon, the colours are fantastic and that break-in scene is *ahem* smashing! Great sense of action and a lovely mood set, good luck to ya!
I only started thinking about having a crack at this myself a few days ago, not sure if I could realistically put out four pages between now and next Friday though. Might put my head down on the weekend and give it a shot...
Aye, lovely stuff indeed Jon.

Thank you both. The encouragement I've had on this has been amazing, both here and over on my FB page.

Wow! I thought I could knock stuff out quickly, but if you manage to pull off such a Dillon-esque feat I'd dearly love to see it. Amazing!
Looking very good. Good luck for the event.
I know I would baulk at doing a stand up presentation (if that is the way it's done) Couple of stiff drinks might get me through.
Jon - In the first flashback frame, did you create the buildings by scanning a scalpel blade and handle and putting on an overlay?
Fantastic effect if you did - I now know how to create an instant cityscape!

Gah, is it? Hope not.
I've done some speaking/ presentations in universities and similar, so I suppose it's not the end of the world if that's the case. I once presented to a story-boarding course before realising halfway through that Dave McKean was sat at the rear of the room.
Just about got away with it.
Anyway, it's all a bit of fun, innit? Fulfilling a childhood ambition and all that.

Ha!
No.
I wish I planned anything that well. I had this idea that I was going to do everything in a very heavy black ink style with colour washes. Was gonna work it all out beforehand. Then I got sidetracked looking at some concept art, and this just kind of came out.
The city is the result of the way I seem to end up doing everything, sadly; scribbling wildly and then trying desperately to pull back form. The "decision" to work that way was largely because it's scalable. Mre time = a more polished image, but at least you have
something to start with.
My terrible working process can be seen here; https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.168391459916627.45182.105679529521154&type=3

Yeah I'd surprise myself to be honest. But I won't be doing a fully-painted style like you, and I've been (sneakily) roughing thumbs and ideas out during work the last week so who knows...

Sweet, good to see some of the entries for this. Solid job with the colours Jon, can't wait to see more.
My entry got paused at the refined thumbs stage which kills me but overtime at work and a due Masters Degree module come first I guess :(
I hope thoughtbubble and 2000ad do the same next year also so I can have a shot.

Well true, would be great so see more of these "horses" after the Con.
Great colour schemes on that page Jon.
A last glimpse before Leeds.See ya there folks.
Bruno, it was good to meet you briefly at the end there!
In the post-adrenal come down of the the portfolio comp I thought I'd put my pages up for posterity. As we only got to see the one page of each strip on the screen in the actual review, I thought it might be nice for everyone (on here at least) to reveal their hand now - if only to make sense of what the panel were saying in some cases.

Wow, everyone has submitted some amazing work for this, well done everyone!
I didnt get to go on the Sunday so don't know who won, does anyone know where we can see the winning entry?
Saturday was great. It was really interesting seeing how everyone had tackled the script and given their own spin on it. Peter Doherty was really generous with his time and spoke to a bunch of us for a while, giving us tips which was brilliant. Matt gave me some really constructive advice which was much appreciated.
I wasn't totally happy with my submission but I did learn a lot by doing it so it was a really positive experience, I hope they do a comp next year.
Anyway, here's the first page of my entry. I hope everyone else posts their stuff too, I saw some amazing work at TB!
Cheers
Dan

ah, thanks Jon! I hope we get to see his pages, he's got a lovely style. Well done to Will!
Did you get through as a finalist Jon? I hope so, those pages are bloody fantastic!
Thank you.
Yeah, I did. I think it was always very much a two-horse race though. :)
Nice work all, I was unaware of Wills work. Really interesting still I like it a lot.
Thanks for posting the pages Jon, the work reminds me a lot of 90's 2000AD. That's a good thing :)
The main thing that I noticed was the slightly stiff gestures, if these were improved and the drawings had more dynamism and "life" it would be great.
I better start doodling for next year.

Yeah, absolutely! Too eager to get going, not enough thought and planning. Poor panels and compositions too, and a lack of POV variety.
Luckily I'm a firm believer in learning the hard way.
Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it a lot.
