Cover versions are a bit hit & miss, some radically different some so similar as to be pointless. & then of course there are all those awful heavy metal versions of pop songs etc. But I really like this one!
Rolling in the Deep - Adele Acoustic Cover (Jorge and Alexa Narvaez) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtawDJtcRg8)
PS - is there no way to embed youtube clips on here?
For me, the masters will always be Tragedy, the all metal tribute to the Bee Gees. I've seen them twice no less.

This, in turn, has reminded me of GABBA. (http://www.gabba.co.uk/news.html)
A Ramones look(and sound)alike band performing the hits of ABBA.
Can there be anything more delicious than that?
My favourite cover version is Boney M's rendition of 'No Woman, No Cry'.
Not a fan of Coldplay, but this is amazing.
Willie Nelson - Scientist. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v525UGbA448 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v525UGbA448)

I remember Johnny Cash releasing that song and both myself and the wife looking at each other and said he wasn't long for this world
A truely awesome song sadly near the end more so that not only had his wife starred in the video but she to had not long died before him :(
Pete Yorn is certainly my favourite artist of these last ten or so years and he's done a few decent covers (There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, Ever Fallen In Love? Moonriver, Bizarre Love Triangle, I Wanna Be Adored etc) but I get double excited when he covers The Boss...

Both are superb but I prefer the late great Captain's.
Unfortunately some people off of the internet seem to think it was written by the Black Keys.
"I left Angola

Go walking down my street
Knock on my baby's door
My baby come out
She asks me who I am

Since 1942
And I'll tell you Mr. Ugly,
He didn't look like you"

Red rag to a bull that is :D Not sure what/who you mean by that exactly (though I have a feeling there's plenty I'd agree with), but in any case, here's a collection of some favourite covers of mine from over the years. I'll try to avoid the more obscure, but then that's relative. This may go on a bit, but of course you're entitled to ignore the entire thing ;)

The Green Manalishi (Fleetwood Mac) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB19kSIrFNc)
Youth of America (Wipers) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iwvjikOSRs)
Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA8H_Mnfilw) - Somewhat in the category of "so similar as to be pointless", but it's got Leif Garret singing, Dale Crover was the drummer on Nirvana's first demo before they introduced Dave Grohl to them, so it's allowed. Also, if you've ever heard a pub band (or anyone in fact) covering this, you'll know that Grohl's drumming is not easy to match.
Johnny Cash (R.I.P)

Cash's cover of Hurt, together with the video, is one of the most affecting things I've ever seen.

The Dreadful Shadows cover Twist In My Sobriety by Tanita Tikaram (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hEj7rtaUf0)

Since so many Johnny Cash songs have been mentioned but this one has been omitted I'll add his version of 'Mercy Seat' to the list. Simply stunning. The only reason I didn't include it specifically in my list is Nick Cave's original is so good as well and I like me covers to add to stuff.

Surely the best cover the Sisters of Mercy did was 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme' by ABBA, but then they have a huge list of live covers from over the years. They also did 'Always look on the Bright side of life' at Reading Festival in 1991, which was just brilliant and closely followd by 'He's got he Whole World in his Hand'.
As for other covers.
Faith No Mores Version of 'Lets Lynch the Landlord' by the Dead Kennedys

Virus 100 quality record, mostly. There are a few versions that are just too straight to be interesting, but some of them are really out ther. That Disposable Heros verison of California Uber Alles is also on it.
You ever see Alice Donut do it live? The drummer played trombone so the singer played drums and hence it became in instrumental version.
Others that now spring to mind include
Sepultura's version of 'The Hunt' by New Model Army
Fields of the Nephilims version of 'In Every Dream Home a Heartache' by Roxy Music, because it's insanely dark.
Mudhoney's verison of 'Revolution' by Spacemen 3
Everyone I've mentioned are all songs I think are generally better versions of the original, and the originals are all songs I like. The Hunt in particular, always kicks off at gigs when that gets played :-)

Best found on 'March to the Fuzz' which is one the best compliations you well ever buy. One disc of 'greatest hits' and another of B-sides and oddities, including several other great covers. Orignially it was on the B-side of the 'This Gift' 12".

Lawnmower Deth "Kids In America" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJz6_PEu6Iw) - gloriously thrashy nonsense which has possibly the most endearingly crap video of all time.
Goes well with this one - Turisas - "Ra Ra Rasputin" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLo02AquUCs) - a Finnish metal Bony M cover.
And finally, my favourites the Cardiacs do "Suzannah's Still Alive" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YMs5QwHmMc) by The Kinks.

Pretty sure Alice Donut have been in active for some time, sadly. I saw them about 3 or 4 times in the 90's, singer and habit of getting naked on stage pretty much everytime.
Sepultura's version is something to behold, it really is good.
Hang the Pope, Nuclear Assault. Forgotten all about that.
Lawnmower Deth, one of the silliest bands ever :-)
Going to have to rummage through my record collection. Must be something by the Cramps, about half of everything they ever released was a cover.

Toy Dolls 'The Devil Went Down to Scunthorpe' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9qk7oefBBo
Rammstein 'Das Model' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFYltf-kw-A
Iron Horse 'The Unforgiven' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuQkzAg-WYU
The Damned 'The Citadel' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4OfBpJf0g4
filip
A few that I always like to throw into the mix when this comes up, although I've been beaten to the punch on Los Colorados and Nina Gordon.
A new one first. Not just a great cover, but probably my favourite record of the year so far. Neneh Cherry & The Thing - Dream Baby Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpXGIPv29QE)

It's a good 'un and no mistake. You may be familiar with Spacemen 3's reciprocal cover of When Tomorrow Hits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPkpqfx-TW8), which always seemed slightly redundant as the original was written as a deliberate aping of the Spacemen 3 sound. Nice guitar sound though.

Just thought of another- The Breeders covering Sebadohs 'Freed Pig'. The song was written by Lou Barlow and is about his departure from Dinosaur Jr, so quite a clever cover by Kim Deal post Pixies.

I'm a bit of a sucker for covers, so here are a few:
Lowry covers "Africa" (Toto) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1ZIM2BCcpc)
The Ooks Of Hazzard do "Kids" (MGMT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6QXIGGTi-w))
Universal Poplab do "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" (Morrissey) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6Zzu2_6mI0)
Janice Whaley does "Accept Yourself" (The Smiths) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfXme8GySyU)
Rage does "Run To You" (Bryan Adams) (warning, gets a bit rave-y, flashing strobes etc) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5d6KWHsmPk)
Alison Brown & Sam Bush do "Everyday I Write The Book" (Elvis Costello) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zf9cN4ifXjE)
The Associates do "Love Hangover" (Diana Ross) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKQTwvoeZjo)
And finally, my fave song of all time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7apkXKEEwms) - Pet Shop Boys doing "Always On My Mind" (Elvis) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrzAyBfcin4). The epitome of the cover version as far as I'm concerned. Two different versions there, 'cos they did it definitively twice.

Awesome tune where abouts in sunderland did you live????
oooph, just remembered another (but can't search for link at the mo) - On his '1000 years of Popular Music' album, Richard Thompson did an awesome cover of Britney Spears' "Oops I did it again" - though it does contain the feeblest audience singalong I've ever heard!

As far as eccentric Slayer covers go, I've always liked this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2FvK54LWCg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2FvK54LWCg)
Apparently they slightly changed the lyrics because Tom refused to sing the word 'love' or variants thereon.
Creaming Jesus's take on Temple of Love but the Sisters of Mercy is always worth listening to, as they renamed it 'Temple of Shite'. I should say I am a huge Sisters fan but there you go.
Creamers version of 'A Forest' is also great.
Revolting Cocks also do a great and hugely sleezy version of 'Do You Think I'm Sexy' There was a limited version of the 12" and cd which came in a sleeve full of KY jelly. Having had one for about twenty years or so I can reliable inform you that KY Jelly is perishable!

I watched guy I went to University with, who was also from the North East and huge fan of the Toy Dolls, clear half a student union bar leaping around to this like the drunkest person you've ever seen. At least ten tables turned over and god knows how many drinks. Me and my mate had to carry him out in the end. He thought he was in a club in Newcastle called the Riverside. We were in Wolverhampton!

Talking of Muppets reminded me of an album a friend of mine once had- Kermit Unpigged (great pun!). It was The Muppets doing various covers with a couple of famous voices thrown in, my favourite track being Wild Thing because it started with Kermit performing it on a ukelele but then Animal took over the track. I was going to search for the song online but was worried it may not be as good as I remembered, so here's another Pete Yorn cover as he does The Smiths with a slightly extended jam session at the end

It's hard to know what to think about this one. I've never heard the original and jazz always seems to be about building on other people's themes anyway. I've been listening to it a lot this weekend and I love it: The MC5 - Starship (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uyNCg5D-Ow).
