From February's winner
Allistermac -
QuoteRobots have had a long and illustrious life within the pages of the galaxy's greatest comic from the A.B.C. Warriors to Walter the Robot via Ro-Busters, Call-me-Kenneth and P14. This month lets celebrate the circuit board and render some robots. Draw your favourite robot character, draw your favourite character as they would look if they were a robot or create your own A.B.C. Warrior and have fun doing it.
Rules be thar:
- You can have as many entries as you want but bear in mind it'll split your vote so
IT MAY NOT BE WORTH IT.
- No entries from anything you've done previously - they have to been drawn
SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS- There
WILL BE PRIZES. ACTUAL PRIZES. For the first prize winner and for "Tharg's choice" so there's all to play for - !
YOU HAVE UNTIL THE 24th OF MARCH WHEN WE SHALL RIDE THE VOTING ELEPHANT
How's that for a slice of solid fried gold? I may have to blow a couple of deadlines to get an entry in this month!
Cheers
Jim
Nice. Wasn't there a robot one before? Not that I'm complaining, mind you. This competition makes up for the sad loss of readers' drawings on the Input page.
Is Tharg's choice really chosen by Tharg?

The very first art comp I held after picking up the baton from Amstor was 'Big Robots' back in January 2008 which was a little less well-defined than this splendid theme! Much kudos to CFM for keeping this fine board tradition going.
Cheers!
Jim
Note to mods: Could ye not sticky this please? I find it's beneficial to have it bobbing around down in the active topics - !
Making his first public appearance since the forced demolition of Meka-City, the Bling King of the Squared Ring addresses the rising tide of 'Ding-a-Ling Dem' sympathies in the citizenry...
So, what does the King of Droids make of the Art Comp's voting system and, specifically, WhitBloke's chances of getting this month's HM slot after all the other entrants get less flippant entries in..?
Thought I would throw in the first of potentially many ABC Warriors. First thing I have drawn on paper with an actual pen in a long time......forgot how stressful it was not having an "undo" button!
Cheers
Simon.
Ooooh Simon, that is beautiful work, love it man!!
Thanks Steven!
looking at it again, I might repost it tomorrow with a slight amendment........there is something I'm not entirely happy with.
Whitbloke - I actually considered doing Precious myself, but then settled for something else. Nice work!
Simon - That there is some gorgeous line work. Classic Hammerstein.
Unspecified ABC robot.

Hi everyone,
Long time lurker, seldom time poster. I have deadlines and family but pah! Can't pass up the chance to draw an ABC Warrior! I've done this while the little one sleeps, hope you enjoy. And now I really have to get back to work... :)
Apologies for the double post.....just wanted to amend something on the drawing that was bugging me.....this is the completed image. cheers. Simon.

Nice! Two classic Hammersteins there
Here's another Hammerstein to add to the mix -

Saw the third Hammerstein in the making on Facebook - great stuff!
Chris, BMB, Archie, Simon - that is some quality right there!!
I can't resist a robot comp!

JOE PINEAPPLES

That Steven Austin's not wrong, you know, and I just saw the Joe Pineapples. ABC... Absolutely... Brilliant... Contenders!
While some of us (well, okay, me) only enter the art competitions for the fun of it with what amounts to little more than fat-fingered cartoons that get diddled about with on Gimp, it's a regular pleasure to see the entries from others who enter with a clearly deserved sense of pride in their offerings unto the eyeballs of their fellow squaxx. There's already more than enough enjoyable style, skill and discipline in the five proper contender entries to date to make voting a right bugger again this month - and we've still got, what, over two weeks to go?!
Thanks for the thrill-boost between progs, guys. Best of luck when it comes time to get the votes you all so obviously deserve.
JT Peg........outstanding........that's all.
Jake that's awesome. Not an easy character to draw, our J.P. :-)
These comps are just getting better and better with everyone .Been checking my phone every day for new enteries and can say I am amazed at the standard on here just incredible. :D
Once again, Pegg wanders in out of nowhere and makes it look easy. Top job, lad.
Ahem. Didn't even mean to enter, wasn't even thinking of it but this just FELL OUT of my head. I couldn't stop it. Sign this is a good topic!

Ha ha! That's brilliant!
I have an idea for a new ABC Warrior/Possible Volgan war-bot.
Whether my art skills measure up is another thing...

A quick warm up sketch that go outta control... Couldn't decide on whether to have it as a cover or not, so here's both...
I'll link up a decent res version some time soon

I hate your talent people, I hate you all!
What program (if any) do some of you use when editing your pictures on a PC?
Yeah id like to know cause mine are just on scraps of paper and scanned onto forum page as they are.
That Pineapples is outrageous! Good stuff from everyone else. If only I still had my old Acorn Electron I could bust out the Hammerstein head I spent hours painstakingly planning out on graph paper before coding:

There's a variety of programs you can use, but the art industry standard is Adobe Photoshop, or you could use Adobe Illustrator for its vector abilities (vectors allow the image to be scaled to any size without distortion). They cost a small fortune, so you might want to try a trial version or a cheaper equivalent that maybe someone else can point you to.
Gimp is a solid free one to try http://www.gimp.org/
and Mangastudio is cheaper than photoshop, more comic specific and used by a wide range of pros and droids http://manga.smithmicro.com/
For colouring though I've yet to find anything quite as good as Photoshop :( Give gimp a go though!

Mr Holden seems fairly confident that the re-written colour features in Manga Studio 5 will enable him to pretty much retire Photoshop for colouring duties.
Edit: we should probably take this off the art comp thread. Sorry.Cheers
Jim
On a slight tangent, if I manage to find some time (I wish!) away from personal projects, I'm definitely going to throw together some Zbrush art for a future competition. (Google Zbrush images to see where I'm going with this...)

My entry, a Robo-Robo Hunter.

Thanks Cosh!
I use photoshop, mainly cos I know it inside and out. Manga Studio I trial'ed but the interface was so foreign that it felt cumbersome. I'm sure it could be a good program but I couldn't get my head around it the couple times I dabbled. Painter looks really good, I've been holding off of trial'ing it until I have time to give it a proper go.
Some drokkin' zarjaz entries so far Squaxx!
Here's a very quick one featuring everyone's favourite little nicotine pumping robotic amigo, Stoagie!
It's been a while since I last had chance to enter the art comp, but how could I resist drawing robots. Here's my 'hat in the ring' Slaine Mech Roth. :D
Stew.
:o
I may have just splooged over my keyboard give me a sec...
awesome.
This is the first time I have entered this competition, so here is a picture of Mongrol

Wonderful! Reminds me of the animated ABC Warriors trailer.
thanks Owen, would you mid sending me a FB message or something explaining in words of one syllable how you did that?
Cheers.
(looking sheepish and embarrased)
Thanks Steve, I did use that as a reference point along with some other versions.
Can't partake in this month's comp due to PC death. Good job really as there are some jaw-detachingly awesome entries. Wouldn't have stood a chance. Great work everyone.
Fukkinell, the standard is ridiculously high this month. Top work, all.
Bob thats class. :o
Molch-R that is indeed class, i'll eat your brains first!
I'm working on my entry right now, quite happy with how it's turning out.
Thanks Darren
Holy shit!!! Am embarressed at the scrappy doodle I entered, pen and paper are truely dead.you lot are art gods :o

Have faith in the lowly Pen and Paper Beadle68, when the power's down and all the computers/tablets/phones are kaput the pen will remain mighty.
As for the entries so far they are pretty spiffing, my crappy sketch may make it before the deadline if just for the idea. :)
Thanks for the comments its just I have these ideas and would love to be able to colour and texture them like the others, will have to work out how to use gimp only downloaded it other night :).The standard I remember back in the early years of the prog when it was printed on what can only be described as recycled bog paper were no were near as outstanding as these master pieces , you all should be very proud
OK! I said I would enter this time and I shall (I cannot resist a chance to draw robots).
Deadlock! Grand Wizard of the Knights Martial.

For anyone who is interested in the process of art (like I am): this was sketched out on paper, before being inked and painted on tracing paper. I painted on the back of the tracing paper behind the inks using acrylics, and then added the highlights on top of the tracing paper.
My rather piss worthy entry, Robo-Lenny.
I see what Dark Jimbo was saying about scanning-n-binning. Not sure I wan't to look back and these cluttering my room. Ah well, progress. And no, no hands, I still can't draw them for spit.

Hi Guys,
New to the whole forum and the forum competitions but thought it would be fun to put myself in the ring :)
Here's my entry Robot Judge Death!
Gave myself a challenge to do this in under a time limit, hope people like it.
Thanks guys

Bloody hell! One well done first post later! Thats damn fine good sir, I feel prity crappy after all this steller stuff chaps.

Nice Job Ben, what was your time limit out of interest? I'm hoping a long time
Talking of which, any chance of an extension Mr.Organiser? The last Sunday of March is next week... ;)
'Fraid not Stu sir, that's the way the months roll - if I ended it next Sunday folk wouldn't have any time to vote - !
Wow, very cool Ben.
Excellent Death rework there, Ben.
Loved the subject and would have loved to have got an entry in this time, but alas I knew time would not allow. Then snow and inspiration hit and so here we go. Snow-jaws

With possible apologies as I have this nagging feeling that someone has done something similar, if not for the art comp. before. If so I'm sorry I didn't mean to plagiarise!
LMAO! That is brilliant, both in thought and execution!
Well I fully appreciate when you look at all the brilliant previous entries the need to fanny around with mine seems silly BUT please understand Snow-jaws sits just outside the kitchen window and as I was doing the dishes this evening it was really BUGGING me. A couple of things (the bewildered look on his face and wonky antenna) worked well for a freezing snow-jaws but I knew a few minor adjustments would make him more like his... well if not namesake then should I say punsake. So I couldn't resist fannying around. Here's the fussed with Snow-jaws.

Snow-Jaws?
Skullmo suggested i stop by, and check out this thread. And im glad he did.
Some seriously good art (and snow!) on show here. Brilliant stuff!,
Someone posted Bob Molesworth's Mongrol on Tumblr and I had to check out the thread. Everything is fantastic. I have been so busy or else I would have contributed a little something.

Nide one. Top dollar that.
I did a snow Dredd head from side profile once. I think I posted it somewhere on the board as will as some sand sculpts.

Great entries all. Here's mine. A faulty Mechanismo droid attending a paintball game. :D

I really can't see a clear winner here, this has been a beautiful month :D
Remember, IT ENDS TONIGHT at midnight!!
Unbelieveable is all I can say for all who have entered :o , am in shock!!!!
Darren WTF! :o that is amazing! And the Judge Death, I want to see him in the Prog!

Thank you sir, likewise. :-). Keep seeing that Death reposted all over the place, too. Great stuff!
There are some stunning entries there...
I think i'll 'borrow' CFM's idea...and consume your brains. Line up now, good little offal dishes.
Seriously, this is going to be a hard vote. To many excelent entries.
Thanks for all the kind words guys, lots of good entries! Been fun being apart of my first forum competition.
Snowy afternoon, spent the last hour or so trying out my new Bamboo in Sketch Pad on the iPad. I drew this droid, and then brought it into the Dredd Universe by giving it a Justice Department look, but don't entirely know what it could be used for? Tutor, sparring bot, admin...? Just thought I'd throw it into the mix, it's just a sketch and the anatomy is not perfect... But what the heck.
Awesome Mr LARF.
We've now got a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/2000adartcomp
Which may or may not seem a little superfluous, but it's a good way of centring everything - linked straight through to artist's galleries, the entries as they happen - ON YOUR TIMELINE AS IF THE FORUM ART COMPETITION WAS SOMEHOW A FRIEND!
What I will say, is if your art is up there and you're on FB and I've just credited your forum name, let me know who you are ;)
Liked and contacted. ;)
Good call.
Buggerit, ran out of time this month, amazing entries kudo's to all.
Here's the part pencils for what would have been my entry Terri the human ABC Warrior, apologies for the poor photo as the A3 paper is to big for my scanner.

filip
Well here's my entry, by the skin of it's teeth.
Inspired by the fact that since my baby daughter was born 18 months ago all of Daddy's toys (collectible figures) have been packed away and I'm surrounded by her little toys.
So I thought abc learning cubes would be cool as mini ABC Warriors.
Completed using old fashioned pen and paper. With more time and ability I'd like to add more texture and colour to the lil bots.
Loving the competitions as a kick up the ass to do some drawing.
Thanks CFM
