Title: Icons: locking
Post by: Bolt-01 on 16 July, 2004, 07:43:35 PM
Wake is there any way that icons can be locked from being chosen if somebody has it?

There are a couple of boarders who use the same icon, and it is making it difficult for me (slow of thinking, and use the icons for ID shortcuts) to tell people apart.

I reckon I'm not the only person who feels like this, but is it possible?

In the past I've said no, because some icons are generic and suitable for multiple usage - or someone may want to use the same icon for more than one login. However, maybe that isn't a good enough reason. I'll think about coding it when I get back from holiday. Ask me again at the end of August if it hasn't happened.

Cheers,

Wake

What happens to the people who are sharing icons? Will one have to find a new icon? Is it possible to lock only unique icons? How much is a fair condition Hawk edition of Dan Dare 1 worth? Where are you going for your holidays? Have you been there before? Will you send me a postcard? Can we have a party whilst you're away? Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Can I kick it? What is your favourite colour?

Call it a 'need to know'...

I suggest a distinction.

If you make an icon, or one is made just for you, it should be yours alone.

Equally, if someone has really made one "their own" - and is recognisable by it over a long period of time, there is an arguable case that it should be kept for them.
However, I'm not entirely convinced on this one.

I am of the opinion, however, that if you use a generic icon from the site, it's there for general use.

Would I count as one of them?

The coding will be to stop people choosing duplicate icons and won't initially affect those already sharing - because many people currently share 'no icon'.

Fair condition in strict comic grading terms is pretty crap so the book isn't worth much - plus the original Hawk edition was the paperback as opposed the the Patrick Hawkey hardback with is worth about ?50 in very fine condition.

Well, Odds, yours is a good example.

If I was a Zenith fan and new to the site, I'd be annoyed if I couldn't have a Zenith icon.

Perhaps a good compromise would be that, if you adopt permanently a 2K character icon, you first ensure that an alternative icon featuring that character is available.

I know there are already other Zeniths on the site.

I suspect we're adding too many rules to our community with this idea.
We could benefit from debating it a little more.

Perhaps we should have some more contributions on this thread.

What would be the pros and cons of "locked" icons?

I think Wake's already in holiday mode. :-)

Have a good one, webmaster!

If icon locking was implemented then it would affect personal and generic icons alike (but as previously stated existing duplications would not be affected).

People have in the past been reccommended to change icon because they have picked one which is used by a regular boarder, so this is the 'do nothing' option. If someone chose a personal icon not available elsewhere on the site, then I would at the the request of the owner ask the new person to stop using it.

Little point.

Anyone choosing to use a generic icon from the board is probably (like me for a long time with the Devlin one) new to all this internet stuff, and confused by these odd "type >?:@icol into the talk room" type instructions".

So restricting their choice even further seems a bit harsh.

Unless - hey!  what about designing 200 more potential icons, Bolt?

Bolt, did you say somewhere that you might want a new icon, that reflected your idendity better?

If not, please forgive me, is so though, how about a Whistler icon?

I'm sure you'll be able to do better than this one though.

This one might be better

Why so big, the icons are the exact size as how I drew my eye- i guess wake can rescale it then.

Conexus: That is a definate possibility, needs a bit of scaling but it would work over on Review at that size.

Whistler for my icon.....

I've got till Wake gets back to think about it don't I?

how about this? paint is too primative to give information about pixels et all (unless i'm just not looking in the right place)

If you right click on an image & select properties it'll tell you - the one above is 31x35 - they need to be 32x32.

If you're in "Paint" - select 'Image' and then 'Atributes' - it'll tell you the size then (you can also ammend it from here, but it'll just lop off the right & bottom of the picture)

I've got one amended to the right proportions, I'm just waiting for Mr Wake to come back from his hols.

And I'm also looking into the ever popular seasonal variations.....
