Title: tekkie probs and funky monitors
Post by: Tanky on 15 September, 2004, 02:25:26 AM
Greetings board!
Well, i very nearly have a shiny new pc (with a funky flat telly an' everythin!) However, me and my talented tekkie mate are having a bit of a mare, and i reckon someone here's bound to know whats goin on.

Whenever we switch the newly assembled beast on, a message appears on the funky lookin monitor that says 'no cable'. except there is one. i can see it from here. We've also tested the monitor, video card, leads, and RAM to no avail.
So what's wrong? whaddaya say? can anyone help me get back online without waiting til a housemate goes out?!
luv tanky x

Two possibilities
1.  faulty monitor - tested by plugging into another base unit.  If it doesnt work its the monitor
2.  faulty video card - tested by plugging in a working monitor to PC - if it fails its the video card.

Id suggest its likely to be hardware problem and not drivers as, when a PC switches on its not using windows drivers but VGA...  (or something I prolly cant remeber the name of)

Any probs you should know my work email address pop me a mail.  If you dont, post it on thread

I've had my super-fandangled computer for about 8 months and since day 1 it's always said a 'network cable is unplugged' - however it has never stopped me doing naything I need to do - and like yourself I see nothing unplugged.

Not much help but at least you know you aren't alone.

it depends what it is.  If you have a modem the network cable wont be connected, thats what you use for broadband. Also if you have wireless youll get the same message on the network card.

Im not sure if that helps, but in essence you arent using the card.  If its XP you can just right mouse click and select disable which should make it go away

(Of course there may be something wrong with the software which means everything I said is completely wrong.  Unlikely, but possible)

Is the message only when you switch on? i.e. does it go away after 10 seconds or so??

If so then it is just the monitor saying that it has been switched on but can't find the computer it's attached to - basically the video card hasn't woken up yet.  No problem.

If it continues to say No Monitor, and doesn't show you what you want, then summits broke - take it back to the shop.

Is there two VGA ports? My came with the standard one and one on the graphics card and plugging the monitor into the standard one doesnt work.
