Title: Dan Dare
Post by: Leigh S on 27 September, 2004, 02:48:21 AM
The original and best... I've read a few of the old Hawk Dan Dare collections (later stories like Reign of the robots), but today I've just finished reading the new Titan collections of the first Dan Dare story - how good is it?

OK, so the whole idea of a solar system full of aliens is a bit redundant nowadys, but it's so well written and beautifully illustrated that it stands up very well, despite the bits that have dated.

I still kind of side with the Treens, though - the Earth wants their food and in return will promise to leave the Treens alone?  Sounds like extortion to me - I'm with the Mekon!

Hahahaha... it is all rather Imperialistic innit? That said, The Mekon and his goons did shoot down the Earth rockets before they even landed and had a chance to ask for help.

It's all tremendous fun and whilst the script does a time seem very old skool it really is a joy to read. Sadly book 2 has been put back. Out next month now I believe (until it gets delayed again).

Another recommendation here - not only is it great fun, but Titan have produced a fantastic package. It's a quality collection, and I can't wait for more to be released.

While we're on Titan's new stuff, check out the Modesty Blaise & James Bond newspaper strips they're collecting. Fantastic stuff that should be on any comic reader's bookshelves. Titan are really going great guns reprinting classic Brit comics at the moment, so get your paws in your wallets and support them whenever you can!

Yeah, I wouldn't normally agree with Dirty Frank in public but he's right. These are great reads, the Blaise and Bond books are great fun. Buy them now!

I was weaned on to comics by my father with the Dragon's Dream editions of Man From Nowhere/Rogue Planet/Reign of the Robots.  As a result I now have three tatty editions.  Shames that, as if they were in good nick they'd be worth a few bob.

Got the first few Hawk editions when they came out.   Should really find out what I am missing and plug the gaps with the Titans.

The ending og Reign... still gets me every time.  Never did get Ship that Lived either...

I believe the intention is to run and run until it's all out there. But I guess economics will play a part. Certainly anyone with ?20 spare should consider buying the first two from Amazon. As collections go they're vastly superier to the Hawk books. Beautiful little collectiona and the introductions from Dave Gibbons and Terry Jones are very well written. Wonderfully warm appreciations of Frank Hampsons work that are hard to argue with once you've read the contents.

The Hawk books were incomplete, iirc, due to Keith Watson's artwork alternating between colour and black and white.

Any word yet as to when Titan is gonna be reprinting The Man who Drew Tomorrow?

It's well worth checking out the Dan Dare and Modesty Blaise Titan reprints, as they are certainly excellent packages, well put together. I believe the intention is to reprint all the Hampson Dare stuff in order (and somewhat cheaper than the current Don Lawrence Trigan Empire reprints).

All we need now is to get Titan to start reprinting some Frank Bellamy stuff (Fraser of Africa, The Happy Warrior, and Bellamy's Garth stuff would be a good start).

Fraser of Africa is superb. I got a copy recently (had a second copy taken out of my hand!) and it's amongst the best comic art I've ever seen. Astonishing, perfect, beautiful.

Has it?  Oh! I'm guessing Amazon were just slow to get it in then as I preordered it months ago!

Amazon are so cack (although sometimes they're quite good. Just slow).
