Title: ...WEIRD FALSE MEMORIES...
Post by: ARRISARRIS on 10 October, 2004, 02:14:44 PM
...does anyone else get memories that are false, or you just  cant find out wether they were true or not, the thing im talking about is for example everyone until recently thought there was at least 30 odd episodes of Fawlty Towers, when really there is only 12...

...anyway on to my question, was there a Karate Kid 4? my other half just got a boxed set and it only has 1 - 3, but we could both swear blind there was a another, any thoughts chums?...

this happens to me from time to time. I notice it with incidents or things people say. For example, I had a clear and distinct memory of my friend explaining a New Age book on sexuality

but later he denied absolutely having ever done so.

One explanation is that the mind craves a good complete story. So if your disturbing false memory makes a good yarn, or completes a good yarn, it comes to seem real.  I think this is how Urban Legends and falkse quotations get started.

There was a 4th Karate Kid movie, with a girl in it.

That was 'the next karate kid' starring a buxom Hilary Swank (heh heh. Say it fast).

I do this memory thing all the time - and generally argue the point until I look like a giant spaz when I'm invariably proved wrong.

Once I convinced myself that Linda Barker was attractive and was kicking myself when her dead-eyed corpse face peered back from the screen.

Personally I blame the effect of teenage cider abuse in my brain.

I once believed I learnt to read from Transformers comics. Years later, being a nostalgic old fool, I found out on t'interweb that I was at school for at least a year when they came out.

Imagine if you'd learnt your entire moral code from the autobots. And considered the only way to solve arguments was to fight to the death using large humanoid machines. And if your brother had learnt the same from the decepticons.

Imagine the family dinners.

i certainly have plenty false memories, none of them involve tv or comix.

either false memories or previous incarnations. and according to my mother pretty much every memory i have is completely false. leading me to believe that she's actually a changeling parent & wasnae even there.

I have some occassionally. Generally alchohol fueled.

It could just be a slip into an alternate reality.
Like the one where I was Jack the Ripper killing Adam and Eve on the Titanic.

i'm sure i've done that.  jjust small things, like once i saw a bottle fall and i made out to grab it, but it hadn't fallen at all.  i looked like a div.  i'm sure it was falling in some aulternate reality.

There was this one time that a mug fell and crashed at my feet whilst I was walking down the street.
Looking around, it came from nowhere...

I recall somebody telling me they thought Justin Timberlake was an outstanding singer/songwriter...

another kind of false memory I`m occasionally plagued with is when I see a movie which is terrible, then forget that I`ve seen it.
I think this comes about because I had hopes for it and thought it couldn`t have been that bad, or something.

I have this memory of killing a hooker with a hammer, and her eye got caught in the strap of my watch, so I pulled and pulled until her eye got ripped out of her skull and was just hanging off my wrist.
It's crazy, of course.  I've never worn a watch in my life.

WHOORE!

I was reallly REEEAALLY drunk this one night, like mixing drinks is verrrry bad for me, and we were walking up castle hill on the left hand side. Earlier I had tried to call a friend to come and pick me up, but my phone had died so I thought she wouldnt come. So we walked up the hill, and she drove past but I didnt see. According to her, I was on the OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD!!! IMPOSSIBLE!! I CLEARLY REMEMBER HAVING A BIG FUCKING HEAVY TRAFFIC CONE OVER MY SHOULDER, AND GETTING TOLD BY THE COPS TO PUT IT BACK, WHICH I DID, IN FRONT OF A BAKERY WHICH IS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE!!! yet my friend says that she saw me with the cone on the right.. yet when I WAS on the right, the cone I did not have! (I ran up the hill before my friends to make sure the indian didnt shut before they got there.)

Sorry for shouting. But its mad!

I have a childhood false memory of someone taking off the side of an aluminium swimming pool only to leave the water still standing up in the pool shape.
I`m pretty sure this didn`t actually happen

What's worse is when you have memories that you think are false and then relaise that yes, that did actually happen and now you must change your identity before They find you again.

I used to sometimes remember a scene in a film, or a bit of pop music that I'd only imagined, or sometimes I have dreamed that something happened, or that I was watching a film, and then remembered *the dream* as if it was something that really happened.

...actually - you know the film Scrooged, with Bill Murry? His fondest memories were actually things he'd seen on tv, and were actually episodes of Lassie and Little House on the Prairie that he'd confused with his own childhood.

On another thread, we were talking about the provenance of the Spear of Destiny, and I had a vague recollection of someone in a museum in a tv history documentary or a trailer holding the supposedly genuine artefact.

My girlfriend was kind enough to point out that it was John Hurt in the Hellboy movie...

(I'm going to start looking for a good rest home immediately. You don't want to leave these things to chance...)

I will return with additional false memories soon.

I am absolutely certain I saw an episode of H.R. Pufnstuf as a child in which Pufnstuf and Jimmy had a potato sack race.  Unless there's a magical 18th episode they never showed again and skipped on the DVD box set, this never happened.

shit ! you know how memories get replayed a lot & refreshed & feel familiar ?

well reading this thread just triggered a buried one which i've never seen in all these years & its accompanied by that slightly queezy feeling of genuine flashbacks... only its a totally triveal tv one,  marine boy ? was there a cartoon called marine boy ? was it manga style, some blond boy, the sea , music theme tune, big eyes, i think i was in love with him. wtf?

I often get the strangest feeling that I'm living out events from a dream I had when I was fifteen, what's more I remember telling my best friend all about this dream at the time, how years and tears passed in the dream and it was all as real as real can be...from time to time I get tantalising flashes of deja vu that I link back to that dream...I'm sure it's just my mind playing tricks but can't help wondering if I'll wake up one morning and be fifteen again....Aaaaagh!  The Horror!

well, i met some people this summer, by fluke, tho they were actually looking for me, we chatted they asked me to do some workshops at this centre they are running, i'll swear i had a dream that night about the building, the exhibition they had on & being handed a cuppo tea... so there i was today  , deja vu central, at their centre exactly as... tho it wasnt just deja vu, it was this conviction that it had been a dream & i'd told people about the dream..

anywey, i havent had a decent nights sleep in a weeks & have been eating shite, so i guess my heads just tripping out. wierd tho.

Sounds familiar.
I had a dream the night before new years eve about 4 years ago.
I still get deja vu from it.

That dream influenced a decision at the time.
So has it became a self fullfilling prothecy?

ahhh indeed we get intuitions & wierd hunches & act upon them " it was fate gov'"... when really these are delusional thoughts driven by deep seated neurosis in denial of self determination. we are hell bent on repetition of dysfunctional cycles in the name of some great mystery.

but i still believe in fairies. and any decisions i make are determined by elder gods.
