Title: Computer Techy help required!!!
Post by: Buddy on 19 October, 2004, 12:34:34 AM
O.K.
So I installed the Dredd v Death game on my PC. (finally tracked down a copy, thanks, you know who you are).

So when I go to play the damn thing I get a message saying (to the effect of): access timed out on drive.

Appears that it can't recognise the disk in the drive.

Doesn't tell me there is no disk in drive just can't access it.

Dirve works with other disks.

Anyone else had this problem or know what the problem might be?

Ta.

you probably need to instal a new vidio driver.

Link: here

...but it let you access the drive to install the game?

Sounds like a faulty CD try it in someone else's PC. (Or, if you've got a CD drive and a DVD drive try it in the other drive).

Don't think it's a faulty CD. It successfully installed in the first place, it's just not kicking in when I click on the desktop icon for the game.

I'll try the video driver when I get home.

and if that dosn't work then uninstall it, delet all the DvD files and reinstall it

having and uptodate vidio card is always good news

"timed out on accessing drive" would usually refer to the cd rather than a video driver.

Still could be faulty CD - most computer games allow a certain amount of their data to be transferred to the hard disc but still require access to the CD to make sure you're using a legitimate copy of the game. Not sure if this is what DvD does but it's not uncommon. It could be this hidden data is scratched. Still suggest you try CD in someone elses computer.

Course you could always email someone at Rebellion :)

It is a legit copy, isn't it...?

Yep - it's legit.  Could have been damaged in transit I guess, but try the graphic card driver update first.  Plus make sure you've patched the game to the latest version.  You do have the right disc in the drive (stupid question I know - but I've done this before when the game comes on two discs)?.  You could also check to see what resources are being used if you are running anything else in the background (antivirus, firewall etc. and turn them off if you're not connected)

And once you've done all of that buy yourself a Playstation 2 and never worry about viruses or device drivers ever again.

(And also buy yourself a mac)

Cos Macs rule (but sadly lack Dredd Vs Death).

Considering buying an XBOX and as for macs, I use them in work and have no end of trouble with them, constantly crashing etc... and thery're about three time the price of a comparable PC.

Hmmm, what OS they using?  If they are still using varients of 9 or below I'd beleive you.  If they are on X then wtf!  Get your techies to upgrade them!

Used to be true, but not any more.  If you tray and spec up the new PowerMacs they still are more expensive, but not anywhere near as bad as they were (You used to be able to fly to New York, buy a Mac and still have change left, for the price of a UK Mac).

OS 9 it is!!! Just this morning I've crashed 4 times. Pain in tha ass!!!

Been promised an upgrade for ages (actually someone is comming today to look at them).

But upgrades cost the company money and considering I've had no pay rise AT ALL in 3 years and my co-worker in my department hasn't had one since he started 4 YEARS AGO it looks like the company has no intention of spending any cash if at all possible.

"Cos Macs rule"

Of course, you can have an Audi TT and still drive it like my granny would...

Did the packaging look knocked about at all? Should have been fine.

Taking the thread way off beam for one last post...

There really is no reason why any mac at all should not now be running MAc OS X.  There has been no software missing for X for about a year since Quark came out.  And as that was pish you should have moved to InDesign before waiting.

I have only just abandoned a Blue and White G3 which was perfectly happy running 10.3.5.  In fact I haven't abandoned it at all - It will be going to mum and dads to replace their (younger) PC in email and internet duties.

In terms of cost, not upgrading the OS will have cost them more than the site license...

I have a techy question - my brother was having a slanging match with some guy on a messageboard/forum, and suddenly this message kept coming up on his computer about how a virus was trying to install itself in a folder on his hard drive.  I reckon it was just coincidental, but he reckons it was deliberate.
Is my brother a paranoid looney, or is that even remotely possible?  From what I understand, there isn't any way to contact other forum members via e-mail, or sendmail, or whatever, so I'm not convinced...

Looney.  But it can be done via IP address which most forums log but done make public.

Does that help??

I've worked with PCs for close to 15 years and I've had my mac (powerbook running OS X) and I'm a complete convert - it's both more reliable (I've had a couple of crashes but they've been pretty easy to both figure out the cause and reset without upsetting the computer), easier to use (again, 15 years of PC experience, DOS to Windows - I'm no idiot on a PC) and just plain nicer. When you've owned a powerbook you'll never want to pick up a horrible plastic PC again. Incidentally new iBooks out from ? 740 - really good value.

Still not convinced. I use a mac powerbook on occasion at home, when on the interweb I find the browser tends to muck up a few page layouts, having text over-run images, that sort of thing.

Anyway, getting back to the point of the thread... Think I'll treat myself to an XBOX and avoid any computer upgrading nightmares when wanting to play a new game. Or any game.

I also find that work I do on my PC is no better or worse that work I do on a mac (except the PC don't crash as much so generally it's finished quicker and I end up with more hair on my head, not that I've that much left to pull out).

all right what are the specs of your computer what is the operating system, processor speed, main RAM, Graphics Card RAM

as an example these are the specs for my pc

Operating System: Windows XP Home
Processor Speed: 2.7 Ghz
Msin RAM: 512 MB
Graphics Card RAM: 64MB

The minimum specs for Dredd Vs Death are as follows

Operating Systems: will work with 98/2000/ME/XP (will not work with windows NT)
Minimum Processor Speed: 1.2 Ghz
Main RAM required: 128 MB
Graphics Card RAM required: 32MB (T & L capabilities are an advantage)

hope this helps

'Incidentally new iBooks out from ? 740 - really good value'

Until you drop it and find out how much it's going to cost to get it repaired (and when I say repaired, I really mean replaced).  It's not as if you can even wander down to PC World and pick the bits up yourself.  "What's that, you say?  Three day delivery?  What am I supposed to do until then?"

;)

That said, I've heard nothing but good things about OS X and might even be tempted to change the next time I upgrade.  Maybe.

:)
