Title: Anyone good with laser printers? Drum issues.
Post by: paulvonscott on 19 October, 2004, 03:05:12 AM
I have this laser printer, it has it's problems, but does me fine.

Now, I keep getting a message up saying the black drum is exhausted.  Fine, I have another.  but the thing is, I seem to be able to still do decent copies by just bypassing the warning.  Is the drum really exhausted, or just tired.  Or am I potentially damaging the printer?  I'd like to know.  I'd rather not screw the printer, but then again I'd quite like to get my money's worth!

Any help appreciated.

Doh!  Read the manual Paul!

I keep forgetting I have this.  Sorry everyone ;)

Surprisingly it helped.  The Drum warning comes up after 12900 pages, but you can keep going until you eventually notice defects in your copies.

Lovely!

Cheers

Well, drums have a life expectancy (of x thousand of pages) but this is typically based on y% coverage. Since no-one ever does that exactly right it's not uncommon for your laser to think it's about to give up the ghost but for it to still work for awhile (think of it like the warning guage on a cars petrol tank). I'd buy a drum so that if it stops working in the middle of a print run you can replace it and get up and running quickly.

Cheers TechnoPeeJay!

It's good to know the facts behind the info.

I was worried, because I don't think I'd done that many pages, then again, I tired to print the whole comic on this thing last time (big big mistake, lots of grief)

I do have a spare drum, all eventualities have been catered for etc.  Well, not all but a few of em.

The last page of Solar Wind has been printed.  Let the drunken collation begin!  Ye-hah!

Aargh! I've stapled my hand...

Cheers

HTH

IIRC most drums/toners are quoted with a life expectancy based on 5% coverage (which is rather like a normal letter). Printing comics with lots of black will obviously skew that figure, a page of Timson's will obviously head towards 98.437% black so that'd clearly reduce your rate. :P

(Other hint for toner, if you're getting a very poor print quality take it out and gently sway it - so that you level the toner out on the inside of the cartridge, toner is like very fine dust and can actually end up all on one side).

Well, to be honest it was too much for my printer, and as it is the copyshop guy does a great job with the copies anyway.

Timson composes his artwork by putting doen a black sheet in front of him, and delicately scraping away a few bits.

As I just do the covers and the reverse of the covers, I can make sure I'm not printing too much black on the reverse.

Cheers for the tips (no, not that one).
