Title: Windows Update Disc needed
Post by: WoD on 21 November, 2004, 11:47:01 PM
Like a lemon I gave someone a loan of the Windows update disc that Microsoft used to do (they have now stopped doing it) and I can't get it back.  This means that I now have two PCs which are desperate for updating and shouldn't be used online without it, so me mum (and now mum-in-law) are without PCs...which kind of sucks.

So...does anyone have a copy I could BORROW..I will quickly copy and return the orginal along with my everlasting thanks.

The disc in question covered all the updates for windows; 98, Millenium, XP etc. Up to around February this year (I think) and it's not the XP service Pack 2 disc.  It also came bundled with a free trial of a anti-virus and firewall package, in case this helps to jog memories.

If you do have it, and I can borrow it, email me and I'll send you my addy.

Many, many thanks...

WoD.

I've never seen such a CD let alone used one - I only ever perform Windows Update via the net.

Obvious suggestion - and I know MS 'customer support' is often inpenetrable - but have you called them?

not called them Mat, but did find out on their page that the disc is no longer available.

The problem I have is that I can take the PCs back to factory settings, but then the update downloads are so massive that the cost would be crazy and the time it would take equally bad.  Serves me right for being Mr Nice and lending the bloody thing out to someone I didn't know!

Can you take the machines around to somewhere that has broadband? Shouldn't take long to download the updates that way, so the window of opportunity for potential attack will be pretty minimal.

Also, whilst it pays to be careful, don't be too paranoid about all the nasties out there, or else it'll stop you doing anything.

A decent virus checker & firewall will stop 99.9%of those nasties anyway - I didn't get windows XP SP2 upgrade for ages and I had no troubles in the intervening time.
