In the early years I think that Johnny Alpha was always accompanied by Wulf Sternhammer on all of his adventures (from the Starlord stories until to his death in The Ragnarok Job). Can anyone tell me in what Strontium Dog stories the Gronk, Middenface McNulty and Durham Red also appear with Johnny?
Thanks.
i can find out for you but itll take awhile because all my starlords are packed away somewhere.there might be somewhere on this site where you can find out.
Hi there, best bet for that is to have a hunt around on the site. Look under the thrills menu and you should be able to get the info there. If you want to wait I'm sure some knowledgeable boarder is gonna show up in the next few hours.
Have checked out the site, which does list the likes of Wulf, Middenface and the Gronk as appearing in some of the stories, but I'm pretty sure this is not extensive. For example, Wulf and the Gronk are not listed for all the SD stories in which they appear.
So any more info would be much appreciated.
Johnny Alpha first meets Wulf Sternhammer, a Viking marauder, when he pursues the Max Bubba gang from 2170 back in time to the year 793 ('The Ragnarok Job' Progs 445 - 465).
Although Wulf is himself transported to Johnny's time, Johnny has at least one partner prior to Wulf, that being Sniffer Martinez, killed in 2173 (q.v. 'No Cure for Kansyr' Starzines 6 - 7).
During this time, Wulf is presumably fighting in the Trigon Wars (cf. 'The Killing' Progs 350 - 359)
In 2185, Wulf Sternhammer is killed by the Max Bubba gang (again, 'The Ragnarok Job'). Johnny Alpha, left for dead, wreaks vengeance but doesn't form a semi-regular partnership with Durham Red until 'Bitch' (Progs 525 - 529) and, later, Middenface McNulty in 'The Royal Affair' (Progs 532 - 536).
As for the Gronk's first appearance, I'd wait for The Watcher to impart his encyclopedic knowledge when he corrects everything I've got wrong.
i think the gronk and wulf are in it from the start if i remember rightly.i own a first printing of starlord iss1 so i have read it but its been a while ill just go check
wulf sturnhammer is in the first issue of starlord with johny ill have to search harder for the gronk
That Gronk doesn't make its appearance until 'Papa Por-Ka' (Starzines 3 - 5), its poor heartsies bursting at the climax. Not sure if it's the same Gronk (who could teach Lazarus a thing or two) that later accompanies Johnny unt Wulf.
youre correct there i have issue three and just cheked it and hes there alright, i thought he didnt appear till 2000ad. my favourite story is the one with the monkey men whats that one callled. the one where wulf sticks his socks in hitlers mouth is a great story i have a reprint of it what issues did it origanly appear in
So would I be correct in thinking Durham Red appears in all stories from 'Bitch' to 'Final Solution', and likewise Middenface appears in all stories from 'Royal Affair' to 'Final Solution'?
Also, I think the Gronk might appear in all stories from 'Galaxy Killers' to 'The Kid Knee Caper', but then only appears in 'Outlaw' and possibly 'Final Solution'. Any experts feel free to correct me.
The Gronk in Papa Porka is the ?real? Gronks brother
Going from memory, the Gronk appears in all the stories in Starlord from his first appearance in Two Faced Terror :
Then in 2000AD:
Galaxy Killers
Journey into Hell
Deaths Head
Schicklegruber Grab
I?m not sure if he appears in the first part of Portrait, speaking to Wulf?
Bad Boys Bust (at the end, IIRC)
The Gronk Affair (obviously!)
Kid Knee Caper
Outlaw
I don?t think we see him again until he?s a rubbish Ennis gronk
Not sure if it's the same Gronk (who could teach Lazarus a thing or two) that later accompanies Johnny unt Wulf.
It's a different gronk, who first appears in 'Two Faced Terror' in Starlord 12 - 15.
Working as a medical gronkses at a carnival, the gronk recognises that Wulf is wearing the skin of his brother, Gloppus.
Which is nice for him...
The last time we see the original Gronk is almost certainly in Outlaw - Alpha tells the Gronk to "Wait there"... presumably, he's still waiting!
Red reappears in Stone Killers and the Final Solution recap
McNulty reappears in Outlaw, Big bust of 49, Warzone, Royal Affair, the Rammy, Stone Killers, No go Job and Final solution - he might also put in a cameo in Rage.
Thanks, that pretty much covers my intial question I think. Just a couple more questions that require your expertise ...
Does the Gronk appear in 'The Doc Quince Case' (progs 190-193)?
I know for sure that Johnny is partner-less in 'Rage' (progs 469-489). Presumably, he is also partner-less in 'Incident on Mayger Minor' (progs 490-496), 'A Sorry Case' (progs 540-543) and 'Incident on Zeta' (prog 573)?
Does the Gronk appear in 'The Doc Quince Case' (progs 190-193)?
I'm not 100% sure without checking - the story leads on from Muties Luck, and Im sure the Gronk isnt in that, so I'd probably plump for no -wil check though.

Yep
I thought some of Johnny's other fellow S/D agents might be also be worth a mention since they sometimes aided him in his adventures.
Sniffer Martinez has already been mentioned, 'No Cure for Kansyr' (Starlord 6-7). I guess Kid Knee would also count, 'The Kid Knee Caper' (progs 228-233), as would Feral, 'The Final Solution' (progs 600-687).
Perhaps the most help Johnny had was in 'Outlaw' (progs 363-385). Apart from Wulf and the Gronk, backup was also provided by Middenface, Evans the Fist, the Torso from Newcastle, Spud Murphy and a few others - can you name them? I think a few of these were killed during the course of the action.
Are there any others you can think of that aided Johnny in any of the other storylines?
McNulty cameos in Ragnaraok and Rage , asking for cash for booze in the first and offering support hunting Max in the second.
backup was also provided by Middenface, Evans the Fist, the Torso from Newcastle, Spud Murphy and a few others - can you name them?
Going by fuzzy memory there was also Frinton Fuzz, Vince Scampi, Sideways Smith and some dwarf (name forgotten completely, Low Blow Eddie or something daft like that.)
Thanks Smiley. You sparked my memory. I think that the dwarf was a "low blow specialist" called Big Eddie Little. I think that Big Eddie, along with Spud, Sideways and Torso, was one of those killed during the course of the action.
Since Frinton was the son of one of the Mutant Army generals, can anyone fill in the names of any of Johnny's other fellow generals?
Here's what I can vaguely remember:-
2-headed Scotsman (can't remember his name - think he may have been leader before Johnny)
Middenface McNulty
Evans the Fist
Clacton Fuzz
George Moore, aka the Torso from Newcastle
Box ??? (can't remember his last name)
not sure if there were any others ...
Pretty sure he was called Box Paton. Can't remember the two-headed jock twin brother's names offhand. Had a pair of tam o' shanters and one got shot before the other, didn't he? General Armz was Johnny's leader, while two other soldiers I can remember offhand were Crabtree and Jimmy No-Nose.
Mutant Generals:
General Armz, commander of the Mutie Army's South-West division (killed during the Battle of Upminster)
Johnny Alpha (promoted after Armz is killed)
The Alexander Brothers (Tom and Jack), Highlands and Islands Division (killed during the Battle of Upminster)
Studs Boyce (William James Boyce), Midlands Division (killed escaping from prison)
Evans the Fist (Huw Rees Evans), Welsh Division
Clacton Fuzz (Claude Ince), South-East Division (killed escaping from prison)
Middenface McNulty (Archebald McNulty), Scotland
The Torso from Newcastle (George Moore), North-East Division (killed by the Stix brothers during 'Outlaw')
Mutant Soldiers:
Hiss, Cuss and Silent Weerd (killed during 'The Gronk Afair')
Box Paton (one of Armz's lieutenants, later one of Alpha's assassination squad, killed by Kreelman's bodyguard)
Beanpole (killed by a T-Gun during the Battle of Upminster)
Crabtree (killed making a suicide run during the Battle of Upminster)
Jimmy No-Nose (suicide bomber)
Dennis No-Nose (one of Alpha's assassination squad, killed by a T-Gun)
Nearly Normal Norman (one of Alpha's assassination squad)
Tripod Thompson (one of Alpha's assassination squad, shot in the legs)
Duckbill Higgs
D'oh! missed this thread!
So, er, yeah. What they said...
Yeah, I remember the Weerd brothers - more S/D agents gone bad! But I think that maybe only Hiss and Cuss appeared in 'Portrait of a Mutant', with Silent only appearing in 'The Gronk Affair'?
Not sure if this should really be a different thread, but since it's directly SD-related I'll leave it in this one. I'm trying to compile a list of villains to appear in each of the stories.
Here's what I have so far, but there are still plenty of gaps to fill in (especially for later stories) ...
'Galaxy Killers' - ???
'Journey Into Hell' - ???
'Death's Head' - ???
'Schicklgruber Grab' - Stix (first name?)
'Mutie's Luck' - ???
'Doc Quince Case' - ???
'Bad Boys Bust' - ???
'Portrait of a Mutant' - Nelson Bunker Kreelman
'Gronk Affair' - Hiss, Cuss and Silent Weerd
'Kid Knee Caper' - the Mutator
'Moses Incident' - Malak Brood
'The Killing' - the Osmongs, + others?
'Outlaw' - Kreelman, Stix brothers (first names?)
'Big Bust of 49' - Xen the Brainwraith, + others?
'Slavers of Drule' - the Slavers of Drule! (not sure if they were specifically named)
'Ragnarok Job' - Max Bubba + gang (names?)
'Rage' - Max Bubba + surviving gang (names?)
'Incident on Mayger Minor' - ???
'Bitch' - ???
'Royal Affair' - ???
'Sorry Case' - ???
'The Rammy' - ???
'Stone Killers' - ???
'Incident on Zeta' - ???
'No-Go Job' - ???
'Final Solution' - ???
A long list I know, but hopefully the experts will have the answers!
What's all this for, Dogfan?
Fanboy curiosity, or are you writing a book?
I started work on this SD timeline, which may be of some use. Obviously, it's not finished yet...
Link: Timeline - work in progress
Like the timeline Noisybast, can't wait to see it complete.
The questions are mainly out of curiosity, His Lordship rac - that and reliving old (and dimming) childhood memories. I pretty much read all the stories from 'Portrait of a Mutant' through to 'Rage', but don't know too much about the earlier or later stories.
It would be nice to see a dedicated Strontium Dog site though, with perhaps an A-Z of its weird and wonderful characters and in which stories/progs they appeared - perhaps something along the lines of the old Judge Dredd A-Z.
OTTOMH, the Weerd Bros. are also in Journey into Hell. The rival agents in Schicklegruber Grab are Big Cynthia, Armstrong Jones and Slabhead, and Max Bubba's surviving henchmen are Impetigo Jones and Brute Mosely. And don't forget Steelkreeg the Android in The Killing.
There were three rival agents in Bitch, but the memorable one was Doc Death. Man, I hated that he was never seen again.

My site's geared more towards the UT2004 mod I'm working on, but there's a few character bios on there. I'm sure more content will appear in time...

Those members of the Bubba gang definately sound familiar now. I think one of those that was killed by Johnny in 'The Ragnarok Job' was Banana-Nose Geest, but I can't remember if there might have been a few others.
Were there more than three Stix brothers? I know there was one that died in 'The Schicklegruber Grab' and another two in 'Outlaw'.
I'd place the Kreeler Conspiracy in 2169 (not 2179 as stated in the strip, as this isnt "at the start of his bounty hunting career". There are vague inconsistencies in the story (Kreelman as President of Earth), but these can be explained by it being the work of a historian droid whos filling in some blanks and wibbling the facts a little - the 2169 date also explains Wulfs non-presence.
The Sad Case story first introduces Wulf to Kid Knee, so it's before the Kid Knee Caper (obviously!) - I'd say perhaps after Journey into hell and sometime before Roadhouse, as by that story ISTR Wulf is getting a bit peeved with all this dimensional malarky! :) The Headly Foot job mentions that Foot is related to Kid Knee and wulf knows who Alphas talking about, so thats sometime after this I'd say
I think that Tax dodge shows accounts for Alpha covering bounties up to and including Hitler? I'll check this one out tomorrow, but I reckon that puts the story as just prior to Portrait of a Mutant.
Traitor to his Kind must happen post Portrait, as Wulf knows about Kreelman... It's hard to say where it fits, as no mention is made about Kreelmans whereabouts - Possibly post-Outlaw?
"think that Tax dodge shows accounts for Alpha covering bounties up to and including Hitler?"
It does yeah, but I think that list was designed by someone other than Wagner. I think it was a joke image that inspired the actual story so timeline-wise it cant really be relied upon.
"It does yeah, but I think that list was designed by someone other than Wagner. I think it was a joke image that inspired the actual story so timeline-wise it cant really be relied upon."
True, but since it was used as the intro to the story, I reckon that gives it enough clout to dictate the time period the story is set at
The list in the tax dodge is as follows:
Methane Ronson, G12/--00!, Dwindling Edwards, Sharb, Onan the barbarian, Beestlt Gang, Oris k'pu'pu, Max Quirxx, Kansyr, Billy Jo, Sadan, The Brain, Harry Gross, Rat Eyes Reagan, Willy Blanko, Adolf Schicklgruber, Doctor Leviathan Quince, Bubo and the bad boys.
The page was made by James Norton.
I would have posted thin in my first thread but I didn't expect to find the prog so quickly.
Yeah, it was in a dogsbreath originally
Not so much of a continuity question, but were there any stories other than 'Portrait of a Mutant' and 'The Ragnarok Job' where the bulk of the story was told in flashback (and was Wulf featured in any of them)?
This question is for pre- "Final Solution" stories, rather than any of the newer ones.
Some of my pre 600 tooth history is blurred at best so can i ask one question in reguards to an answer given?
Hiss, Cuss and Silent Weerd (killed during 'The Gronk Afair')
How the heck did they get out of the hell dimension from "journey into hell"?
How the heck did they get out of the hell dimension from "journey into hell"?
According to part 3 of 'The Gronk Affair':
'But the Weerd Brothers did escape for the hell dimension!'
So, that clears that up...
When "The Devil" destroyed the Hell-dimension all the prisoners were probably transported back home just like Johnny and Wulf were. Alternatively the Weerd brothers could have got the tickets to home in the city of Hate and got sent back by Mr Sun and Mr Moon.
What a weerd sentence.
Yeah, I remember the Weerd brothers - more S/D agents gone bad! But I think that maybe only Hiss and Cuss appeared in 'Portrait of a Mutant', with Silent only appearing in 'The Gronk Affair'?
Hiss and Cuss are part of Alpha's assassination squad - Silent doesn't appear to be at the battle of Upminster, but is present when the brothers first appear in an earlier episode.
The Bubba Gang:
First gang seen during the flashback story:
Max Bubba - gunned down at the end of 'Rage'
Brute Moseley - crushed and left to die in a rockfall during 'Rage'
Impetigo Jones - eaten by crabs during 'Rage'
Skull - Machine gunned during 'The Ragnorak Job'
Lowdown O'Phee - Machine gunned during 'The Ragnorak Job'
Banananose Geest - skull crushed by der Happy Stick during 'The Ragnorak Job'
Second Gang
About a dozen un-named ones are killed during the gunbattle in the first episode, and four others die when Wulf briefly escapes during 'The Ragnorak Job'
Tattoo - chucked off a cliff during 'Rage'
Lester Fester - Thrown onto a bonfire during 'Rage'
Nev No-Neck - stabbed to death during 'Rage'
The remaining seven are gunned down in the Chum Monastery during 'Rage'
Thanks Lobo. I remember Tattoo, but had pretty much forgotten the others.
Have been trying to think of a few more memorable S/D agents. Two of which I think appeared in 'Outlaw' - Pimply Smith and Smelly Quinn. Anyone think of any others?
