Title: another nutty idea
Post by: Marbles on 25 January, 2005, 07:43:41 PM
how about the Meg printing a Dredd story without any speech balloons etc. then directing u to this site to download an mp3 file to hear the speech, noise effects etc. bit like those aural guided tours in museums you listen to on your headsets. would be a fun thing to do - mebbe in a xmas special or somesuch. get big finish involved.

marbles - always pushing the envelope!

Sounds a fun idea, but wouldn't this alienate readers who aren't on the Internet and the hearing impaired or deaf readers as well, though?

They needn't be alienated just because they're not involved, IMO.

I think it's a good idea, but I wouldn't be able to participate, having a PC with no sound card.

What the next step?

Scratch and sniff?

A lot of the pleasure form comics comes from filling in the gaps of what is actually depicted by engaging your own unique imagination. For example, we all imagine Dredd's voice differently (despite the movie and Audio CDs) and that makes reading comics a very personal and engrossing experience.

So, the more literal you make things, the less personal and engaging they become.

It's a bit like my over-riding problem with the new Star Wars films. Things like the Force and The Clone Wars were mentioned but never detailed. Thus, one's own imagination (maybe even only semi-consciously) conjured up amazing ideas and concepts about what these actually were. When Lucas explained the midichlorians and showed the War, there was no way they could compete.

Maybe that's the trick - give enough to stimulate your viewer's or reader's imaginations without swamping it.

I suppose there could have been a comic version of the Big Finish audios... but I think they have missed that trick

To continue...

It seems to me it could be considered a strange paradox that the art of Clint Langley and Dom Reardon are printed consecutively.

In Slaine, we have these unbelievably detailed, glorious and photo-realistic graphics (check out the woman in panels 4-8 on page 4 in this week's Prog) which are then followed by monochrome drawings that are almost like sketches.

So which is better?

Superficially, Slaine is, of course. You are literally shown the action as if there had been a camera pointed at it. The detail is surely unmatched and you can discover new things in each panel even if you look at it intently for a minute-or-so.

But the minimalist approach of Caballistics Inc. really draws you into the story, or more specifically - the text. The rough art is like a framework that you can embellish in your own way - with your own imagination - to complete the picture.

So, I guess there's as much skill in what's left out in Cabs, as what's put into Slaine. Neither are better than the other - they're both great art for different reasons. And it's a wonderful example of something that 2000AD can do so well, unlike any other comic.

Yeah...

Clint's stuff is more technical, Dom's is more expressive.

I did a flash animation of a Sin/Dex story a while back. I even added a soundtrack, but because I never got any volunteers to do voice overs for the characters, the story was never completed. However the Non-verbal animated version is out on the web somewhere. I'll try and track it down.

Yeh I mean a flash animation of the 2K art (minus speech balloons) with Big Finish style audio would be very interesting. You'd get to a place a bit like the BBC website Richard E Grant 'Dr Who' adventure but with miles better art.

I'm just saying it would a fun experiment, not anything more really. But hey, if its the future of comics, you heard it here first folks!

If you still looking for someone to do the voice over I step forward. Send me the script and I'll send you a sample of everyone in the play.

I wouldn't like to see it in the Meg, due to the exclusion thing, but it should be done.

Could easily be put on a CD-Rom coverdisk freebie...then it doesn't matter if you can't use it because it's a freebie bonus.

Yeah, one of the few impressions I can't do is irish, an Irish boarder would have to play finn

I don't know how Scots and Welsh boarders feel about the same matter, but Irish accents by even the very best impressionist always sound terrible to my native ears.  To hear a Terry Wogan, Bob Geldof or Gerry Adams impression (or indeed, an actual recording!) in particular is always painful.  Only Bono seems to be readily doable with any accuracy, and that's probably because he's a self-made mid-Atlantic caricature anyways.  So you're not alone there, maxx.

Anybody who wants a go at doing the vocals for the Sin/Dex Axed story, can read the comic (and hence see the dialog) here

I would need sounds files to be compressed, and in MP3 format- I'd suggest doing each line of dialog as a separate file- otherwise the file sizes would be too big.

I liked your animation, Dane, although I think it moved a bit too fast for comfort.
