hi guys,

long time no speak...

ages and ages ago i got some great gibson art of sam slade in day of the droids and have now got around to thinking about displaying it in frames on my bedroom wall.

any advice on how to do this as i'm worried about the sunlight fading the artwork over time and have considered getting a copy of the artwork framed and archiving the original....any ideas or comments?

Black and white art is probably not that likely to fade if hung indoors. You can buy UV resistant glass for frames, though the easiest option (which I hope works for the sake of my Black Siddha page) is put the art up on a wall which never gets direct sunlight.

My Frank Hampson Dan Dare page gets no sunlight at all, and I hope isn't going to fade from the fluorescent tubes in my office.

Seriously though-There are very good frames in Atlantic Homecare( they have that in the UK ?)
now for about 18 euros, which is about 11 sterling?- they're poster sized so they should accomodate most comic art

These use plastic instead of glass- I don't know if that is an advantage or not

I have a Day of the Droids page framed this way myself!

now, i just have to spend all day in my bedroom to ensure no direct sunlight hits the walls!  ;o)

I came home the other day to find my little collection all nicely framed and put on the wall by Mrs WoD...how good was that...

except for the Cabs piece as it is 'too violent' apparently...

I'd love to get my work framed but theres no room, too many pieces to choose from and our walls are especially weak.

I do have a couple of pieces in frames though to protect them. Cheap large (ie big enough for DOD artwork) are hard to find and I'd end up spending hundreds just buying frames. Much rather spend that money on more artwork :)

I've got more pieces of artwork then frames/wallspace - so I rotate them every now & then.

I think Ive got my first piece of art to collect at the post office today so I really appreciate this thread.

I think it's great that we are now all able to buy original artwork so easily online. Especially from Wake :) but on Ebay as well.

If only I'd had money and known about it earlier!

I remember the Carlos pages for the Apocalypse War GN's being on Ebay a few years ago and they went for an amount I can't remember but I think it was something I thought was mad then but would consider reasonable now. Was probably Rufus who bought them ;)

i have mine on the walls.

non reflective glass. best way with B&W is a lovely quite wide boarder in black it offsets the contrast wonderfully.

with a frame not overly bulky but but perhaps in not natural tone. i used a silver leaf to great effect on one piece of bad company.

a truly stunning effect i saw was the orignal art work next too the page of comic it finally became.

i am not into collecting art to put in dark portfillo holders.
i say display it and enjoy it for what i represents. not in direct sun light but at the end of the day. its ART and deserves its place of exhibition.

though wake and rufus of course would need a wing of the national gallery to display their collections. but us mere mortals with a handful of pieces should be leave the archiving to such people and display and enjoy our passion.

I got my second piece of artwork yesterday. My first is a Blackhawk page from 1979, the second is a Kev Walker page it bought from Fatbaydale.

I just need to get them both framed at weekend so thanks for the advice guys.

Mine has a bloomin Christmas tree in it for crying out loud...I would have thought that it would have gone some way to cancelling out the commandos...

But you can't keep the Christmas Tree up this late after Christmas...

I own three pages which i keep meaning to get framed right.Right now they are in some cheap plastic frames which i surpose are ok.All three are black and white and i find that a light gray is pretty good as a border colour.

I own the megazine 4.10 cover art by Henry Flint.It was the first art I bought and still my fav piece.
A page of Lenny Zero from meg 4.2.Its the second Lenny Zero story(Dead Zero)part two,page 3.
And from 2000ad prog 1274 a page of Shakara.Its the first page of part three,where half the page is given to a shot of Shakara wrapped up in tentacles.My fav drawing out of the whole story of Shakara.
Both Henry Flint pages are signed by him.

well, i bit the bullet and took them to be framed on saturday.  a nice black border with a brushed graphite coloured aluminium frame.  went for standard glass though as the UV stuff added another ?80 to the price (4 frames) and they are never in direct sunlight anyway.....

i pick them up this weekend

bloody expenisve in the UK isnt it. i forget that.
i pay in S$ what you pay in sterling. but its S$3 to the pound.

i only hope you dont share my another trait off mine.
as in the framed pictures will now sit under the bed for a few months until you get around to putting them up.

I know that if I got any of mine framed I'd be doing exactly the same thing as you DD but they'd be stacked up against a wall rather than under my bed.

What would be the best way to get images of them onto a computer.

I've got something like 20 pieces now of varying size, far too many to frame but not enough for me to buy a portfolio just at the moment. Maybe when the pay rise comes through.

I've usually got one piece propped up on my smallest bookcase and used to rotate them pretty frequently but since getting the best page of Cabals *evah!* that's been up constantly. Still takes my breath away, though when I woke up from a fever dream after falling ill with influenza few months ago I looked across the room and thought the main image was a terrible, huge spider come to steal my soul.

And whilst we're on the subject of art a mate of mine just bought a shed load of Carl Critchlow pages, 40 odd pages of painted art and will probably flogging a page or two. Any interest or any chance of listing them here.

40 pages?? How on earth do people manage to get so many pages? Mug the artists? ;) Carry around a huge wedge of cash at conventions?

Getting a proper portfolio case is a VERY good idea. It's when you have 3 or 4 that it starts to take up more room.
Once you've got more than a few you need a proper storage system.

The trick is to buy in bulk at discount prices and then sell some of the pages at the asking price to recoup what you've spent. Or so he tells me.

I always get my pages mounted on acid free board and then always use UV protection glass. It is expensive but how can you replace the page if it fades? ALLWAYS keep out of direct sunlight and NEVER hang above a radiator or other heat source.
Now my wall space is limited i also store in art portfolios. These should be very sturdy and lockable (i think)and always separate pages if in the same insert with acid free paper.
If anyone is interested, i have a few pages i am prepared to sell at sensible prices. Please look in my gallery. All the stuff marked for trade i will sell if offered a sensible price :-)

I guess knowing what sort of price artists are willing to sell for in bulk is a good start. And then having that money spare as well :)

Would anyone cut down a piece of artwork to frame it?

The two I have are different sizes, so they will look shite next to each other on the wall.

If you're just trimming white board, that's okay - but don't think of touching the ink/pencils!

I have trimmed borders for artwork for framing (because I bought a frame that was a couple of millimeteres too short) or for fitting into a portfolio - an inch came off the bottom of all my Filby Case and two remaining Day of the Droids pages to fit them into an oversized portfolio I imported from the States. I try and avoid removing anything written by the artist, but sometimes some writing is lost.

there would be quite a bit that would need to be chopped off on one of them (at the top) but it would not touch them artwork.
