Title: Questions about 2000AD and Rebellion?
Post by: brettcollins on 31 January, 2005, 06:32:15 AM
I just started getting the 2000ad trades from Dc and I love them, but I do have a question about something.  What is the difference between 2000ad and Rebellion?  Does the Dc deal bring the Rebellion trades over too.  I only ask because I just saw the cover to a rebellion trade not to long ago and I thought it looked amazing.  It was a big floating head vampire guy(I think), and I just thought it looked really cool.  I think it had fiends in the name, but I could be totally wrong.  I just want to find out more about that and to see what it was about.  Sorry for my ignorance on the subject and I would greatly appreciate any help.

Ah, that would be Fiends of the Eastern Front!

A great world war 2 vampire story, with art by Carlos Ezquerra.  Lots of fans of that on this site!

Rebellion is primarily a games-development company that owns all of the IP to do with 2000 AD. The DC deal does not incorporate European-only trades (and, in fact, technically speaking, the European trades cannot be sold outside of Europe).

The trade you're referring to is "Fiends of the Eastern Front".

There's a one-page 'developer's profile' feature on Rebellion in this month's Edge.  Interesting list of the other stuff the company own as well as the 2000AD side of things - a motion-capture studio, a film production company.

I know for a fact the motion-capture studio is quite a nice little earner on the side, with film, TV and advert makers frequently hiring it out.

Rebellion is primarily a games-development company that owns all of the IP to do with 2000 AD.

Included in that formulation is the (true) implication that, put simply, Rebellion owns 2000AD.

It's not a very flattering photo of the boys in the article though.

Thing is, in order to see that profile, I'd have to buy Edge. And that'd just make me feel dirty.

2000AD is the name of the weekly anthology comic.

Rebellion is the name of the company that owns the comic.

DC are collaborating with Rebellion to bring out these new trades in both the US and the UK (with slightly differing text on the covers, such as whether to use a '?' or a '$' on the price)

As well as these DC/Reb books, Rebellion are also putting out 'full-size' trades (2000AD comic is approx. A4 in size, so the DC/Reb books have been reduced in dimensions) only for sale in Europe

I *think* Fiends of the Eastern Front will be printed in the Europe Rebellion series, but you probably could still get it via Amazon etc - although it's not due to be published until April, IIRC.

Some of the DC trades have no reference to DC whatsoever on them though...

I know what you mean about Edge.  Its superior, holier-than-thou, seen-it-all-done-it-all, "yawn, not this again!" tone seems purpose -made to get right up your nose.

Of course, this is only because I usually have absolutely no idea what they're talking about in some of the articles.

Sometimes you read the review, and are still left wondering, "yes, but is the game any good?"

I notice the number of pages of job ads has taken a sharp decline in the last few months.  Signs of trouble in the UK games industry?

6 years ago EDGE's job vacancy section ran to about 12 pages.

Now it has 1 1/2 of agency ads and not even the full page ones of old.

Trouble in the UK games industry?

Nah.

I like Edge, mainly thanks to the more mature approach and articles on the state industry as a whole (and things like the marketing techniques employed).  I guess it can be a bit up its own arse, but not so much that I find it offensive (unlike SFX).  Would prefer it if it was just a little more inclusive of the gamer rather than the 'developer' but it is still the only games mag I buy regularly.

Well, it is supposed to be a mag for the industry or dedicated serious gamer, rather than the punter in the street who just wants to find out the lastest cheat codes for GTA: San Andreas.

As for head-up-its-own-arseness, it reminds me to a certain extent of the NME in the early-mid eighties, where a review of, say, a Kate Bush gig by Paul Morley or Pat Kane would somehow manage to reference the work of Kirkegaard and Man Ray.

btw, if anyone's got any GTA:SA cheat codes - like, especially a mission skip - feel free to pass 'em on...

Great guide-site here GR - don't think there's any mission-skip cheats though.

The maps for spray tags / unique photos are very useful though (although I'm missing one photo & I don't know which one I've missed DAMMIT!)

Krust - it was me that was stuck on the flying school. I eventually beat it after hours of practice!

No, I've been stuck on the flying school for weeks.  Only managed to do two of them so far.

Moved onto playing Call of Duty instead.  You get to drive a T-34 in it!  Art would love it.

I bought the first Edge after the redesign, and have vowed to never waste my money on it again. It's so unbelievably humourless, and the journalism has been on the slide since the old team got booted. Erm, I mean "resigned".

The thing is, you can have decent journalism and humour, as evidenced by the likes of Zzap!64, Crash, Amiga Power, and Arcade (even games? makes a brave stab at this now and again), but it appears few readers really care about this these days. Also, it'd be nice if some of the mags dropped all the previews and news crap, and added some actual features once in a while, but hey-ho.

The whole industry seems to have forgotten it's aim is to entertain.

What we need is Kill! Kill! Gaming! Look out for it! Coming soon! Etc.

Crash! was my all time fave..

I'd be happier if the games magazines dropped the bloody DVDs or 'free' books they put on the covers, or at least do a version without that was cheaper.

At least with Edge I get something that I learn something from and it has more depth than the average mag.  I agree it's lost a little since the re-vamp.  Maybe I'll give games another look, this seemed to be more like Edge for the slightly more casual gamer, but I only picked it up once.

On another note, do you tend to agree with the scores more in one mag than in another?  I tend to agree in the main with Edge, but the two other places I look at are Digitiser (pg 374 on C4 teletext) and then on gamespy.com.  Official magazines or ones with too many 'exclusives' are just pointless.

I generally flick through Edge's reviews in the shop, they're good, and this month they wrote an article on how Prnce of Persia should of changed the world, but didn't, which I liked.

Other than that ... zzz.

Thanks everyone for the help.  So is it possible for me to get the Rebellion trades from Amazon Dead Oddboy, even though I live in America.  I am just curious since I am starting to look for comics without spandex heroes in them.  I had heard a little bit about Rebellion and I have always been a fan of Sci-fi and horror, so I thought I might enjoy their comics.  Thanks again for all the help.

Well it should be possible... use www.amazon.co.uk rather than www.amazon.com - you'll probably have to pay more in p+p, but it should be possible - don't quote me on that though!

"I had heard a little bit about Rebellion and I have always been a fan of Sci-fi and horror, so I thought I might enjoy their comics."

Brett 2000AD (and the Megazine) should be right up your street.  There have been two superhero stories in all of 2000AD's 27 year history, and both of those were very different from the usual superhero story.  The rest is all SF action weirdness and fun.  You should enjoy a lot of the TPB's.

Bad Company is a must!  And try Robohunter too.

2000AD is published weekly, and should be available in US comic shops - you might have to ask them to order it in though.

Alternatively, you can subscribe via this site - ?11.45 (sterling) per month outside of Europe. Might be worth signing up for a month & seeing if you like the current stuff - although you'll be coming in very late in the day for most of the stories.

So far I have gotten or have ordered almost all the tpbs through the DC deal.  I am just so glad that DC and 2000ad made that deal since there have been some pretty cool stuff so far.  Nikolai Dante has been my favorite one so far.  I was also pleasantly surprised by Robohunter.  I can not wait for Bad Company to come out.  I just heard from some people that the Rebellion side of things had some more cool stuff and I thought I would try to find out about some of it.  Also WoD it is perfectly okay, things like that are what make this board so fun to read.

The UK Games Industry has been pretty unsettled for the last year or so, a lot of the smaller companies went under or were bought out, and some of the larger companies have had problems as well (Argonaut for example)

I was working for Climax London, but our team got laid off at Christmas when the project was canned.

The trend seems to be to hire contactors rather than permanent staff so they can ramp up and down staff without worrying about redundancy payments etc. Salaries have remained pretty static (or decreased) in the past couple of years as the job market has changed. The weak dollar hasn't helped UK developers either.

It's not just the UK though, EA LA have laid off 60 people recently.

The next couple of years are going to be interesting - the next-gen consoles PS3/Xbox2 are going to require higher quality art which will be more expensive to produce. There's already talk of outsourcing art/creating art procedurally/an increase in game prices to cover this.

Bad Company is most definitely out already, Brett!  It shipped on the 19th and I can't wait for time to sit and read it again.

If you'd like to know what's available and what's coming, you could do worse than my own little site...

Sorry I should have explained better.  I order my comics from a online comic shop.  Since I do this I get my comics at the end of the month.  I should get Bad Company, ABC Warriors, and the new Sinister Dexter trades on Wed.  I can not wait to read them.  I already have your site bookmarked gmslegion.  It is great and I always go there when a new series comes out to see what it is about.  It is incredibly helpful and a great site.

Krusty - that's because you didn't buy them in America.
DC are publishing the DC/Rebellion books in the US
Rebellion are publishing the DC/Rebellion books in the UK
The insignia on the covers differs as such - below is the US cover of the Dante book - the UK version has the regular 2K logo, instead of the circular 'stamp' logo.
