Title: BUYING COMICS
Post by: Will I. Cooling on 01 February, 2005, 08:19:24 PM
Friday is pay day and in honour of this momentous event I would like to buy some comics, obviously there's the Rebellion TPBs (which seem not to be reaching the comic/book stores, maybe Titan weren't so bad after all). Anyway what would people's opinion's be on the following:

Cerebus Volume 1
Strangers in Paradise 1
The Mirror of Love
Dan Dare TPB
Charley's War TPB (specificly does the tpb format/extras make it a worthwhile purchase even though I've got the singles)
Best Humanoids/DC Trade- I'm thinking of one set in the future with someone trying to become the next Genghis Khan but I can't find the right title.

Thanks for the help

Will

All sounds good for the most part, Will.

Except Humanoids. I don't know what that is.

I wouldn't bother with The Mirror of Love either. If it's what I think it is, it's a reworked version of something Alan Moore did for Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia (AARGH!) a million years ago. The reviews weren't good, and it was reckoned to be the most coy and mawkish thing in the original benefit anthology. You might be better off tracking down an original copy of AARGH! instead.

Don't buy Strangers in Paradise volume 1, buy the first volume of the compendium editions. It's a little bit more expensive but has a lot more content, and gives you a much better impression of the series.

Cerebus Vol 1 was brilliant, I read it when it came out.
Charley's war...well, you know what that's like from reading the Megazine. I love it, but I'd go for Cerebus myself.
Vintage Dan Dare has great charm.....

happy shopping

Well problems with the bank screwed me over(forgot account sub charge...overdrawn...nasty...lost all the extra money I made working overnights for the last week of paycycle) so bye bye cerebus, dan dare, The O Men and charely's war. More importantly, it looks I'm not going to be able to get the Buddy Holly and Roy Orbinson CDs I wanted...bollocks, bollocks!!!!

I did get Robo-Hunter, Shimura, Kingdom of the Wicked, How Loathesome and The Mirror of Love (sorry Usher, its came very heavily recommended...its the same poem you're thinking of but with photograpy, etc). I was going to get Bad Company but its heavily delayed at the moment so I got Newt Grinich's new book instead, as you do.*

Anyone else wanna say what comics they've got recently?

*I'm not helping myself I am Floyd? lol

Will, can you give us a precis of How Loathsome at some point? It looked kind of interesting but I didn't think I could justify adding to my financial burden by picking up another series.

Just to say that the Cerebus titles are getting a price hike in the near future...

Sure, I'll prob do a full review of it at some point (not until the end of the month though-its part of the second order with Kingdon of the Wicked and The Mirror of Love...so I won't get it until the 15th/16th at the earliest.

I think it may have finished for the mo anyway, the trades quite cheap...9pounds if you're willing to wait for paperback (I wasn't so it cost me 13).

Thanks for the tip on Cerebus David...I'm wondering whether to wait until I've completed Transmet and Invisbles before starting another collecting attempt...not sure yet.
