Title: Captain Scarlet - He is indestructable - you are not!
Post by: paulvonscott on 12 February, 2005, 04:27:06 AM
So, anyone know when it's on?  The advert looked quite cool.  I'm not a Gerry Anderson fan as such (except for Space 1999) but I am intrigued!

Cool, cheers Frazer.

I have to get up early tomorrow, and I should be back in time to give it a go.  I heard a Captain Scarlet Comic was also due out, not sure if that's still happening.

Is this a new Scarlet or reruns of the originals? Either way I'll be happy, saturday morns have been shite since they stopped showing Dan Dare and Beastwars- prime shared quality time for a dad and his little lad :)
Regards Jim.

Heh, this is the new 'Hypermarianation' one in rather tasty CGI.

I enjoyed the odd episode of Dare I saw, the dvd is cheap, but it doesn't have all the shows on.

HYPERmarianation eh?!  I am totally there dude!
BTW I bought Dare on VHS as a xmas prezzie for my dad, it hasn't got all the shows on either but it still rocks. If the DVD is the same selection and you can get it cheap I'd advise you to treat yourself  to a copy soon.
Yours, stiff upper lippedly, Jim.

Hmmm.  I got a better impression of Dan Dare when it was on telly than I did when I watched the dvd - when I watched that, I thought the show went from average to total bumcakes.

i watched a dan dare that had the most shocking editing, scenes did not fit together, was weird. one where mekon came to ask for help or something. well impressed by some effects though.

I remember reading that Gerry Anderson was making it in Sheperton or Pinewood studios at the same time the Thunderbirds (which he completely disowned) was being made. People kept walking past his studio carrying big bits of Thunderbird set.

Tuned in a bit late, but if it's one of these shows 'somewhere' in a big pile of shit kids programming, then I'm not going to bother with it.  Seems like madness to me!

By looking at my sky programme planner it looks like Cpt Scarlett will be appearing at the same time 10.30.

Seeing as I'm at work at this time, it looks like I'll never see this series, so I'll never know how it compares to my boyhood favourite.

I frecking rocked to be honest... althouhg they split the episode over some rubbish involving some fat bloke from Blue (I think) and gunge... Think I'll stick a tape in next week so I can fast forward through it (instead of reading the paper muttering 'kids today!' like Victor Meldrew)

not bad, will certainly watch further episodes.
my only quibble the opening title music could have had more oomph.

Right, off the top of me head...

Big big spoilers natch...

Captains Black and Scarlet go to mars to investigate some mysterious radio signals. They discover a mysteron city. The city launches some sort of probe thing. Black immediately fires back (there are in some sort of tank). City is destroyed (almost). We get the voice of the mysterons telling them that they hate earth's violence and they are going to destroy them.  A green glowing sphere chases after them as they retreat. It hits the ground to form the two famous glowing circles and attacks them. The two rings go into the tank. Black is dead, Scarlet is critical. We have black's funeral. Scarlet dies. But is reborn with glowing green eyes as the Mysterons take him over. Scatlet sabotages the Angel's flying sky-base thing. He is shot by Captain Blue and falls through a plasma stream. He's now back to 'normal' mind wise but his body has been replaced on a cellular level and he's now indestructible. He also realises on a psychic level that Black is not-dead. Scarlet escapes from t he Sky base to a ground base and steals a car. He's chases by Blue on a motorbike. Scarlet leads Blue to the churchyard where Black was buried. They see the open grave with the coffin burst open from the inside. Meanwhile, Black under the control of the mysterons kills a fat industrialist by putting his limo with him trapped in it in a car crusher... continued next week!

COR!

That's not far off the original, is it?  I'll probably have to buy it when it comes out on DVD if it doesn't get repeated...

Cheers.

I switched over just before it started - which meant that I got to see a blonde bombo dressed as a french maid having big creamy cakes hurled at her until her knickers fell off. Saturday morning TV isn't quite the way I remember it...

>That's not far off the original, is it?

I've not seen the early episodes of the original so I could not really tell you.

The CGI is pretty good - a vast improvement on the Dan Dare one. Not exactly Pixar but not bad. I found myself watching the show instead of picking fault with the animation

doesnt it lose a bit of its charm when it uses cgi and not puppets? i couldnt be bothered to watch it because i would of had to have sat threw aload of crap kid shows. is it sny good?
Title: Re: Captain Scarlet - He is indest...

I wouldn't be surprised if kids prefered watching the puppets, kids see CGI all the time now but a puppet show is more likely to be a curiosity to them. Thunderbirds is still a big hit when it's repeated though of course you can't make shows like it now cos it's just not the done thing.

I liked it. Apart from the theme that is, very dull & not a patch on the original. The CGI was great, definately enhanced by using motion capture rather than direct animation. A much better adaption than Dan Dare.

Grae.

Watched it and loved every minute. Liked the way all the vehicles still had the Gerry Anderson look albeit updated. Liked the fact that it hadn't been made too PC to suit modern kiddy audiences. Would agree with Pulger and Grae though, the theme tune is crap. Think they should have used the original and maybe updated it a bit. Finally, whoever decided to split the show into two parts should be shot. This is annoying on a cellular level indeed.
Regards Jim.
PS.  JEB- there is never, ever, ever a valid reason for posting pictures of Cheggers in the nip. That was nothing more than stomach-churning twisted evil worthy of the Trout himself!

Holly Willoubhy (SP??) from MOM is a delight to watch on a saturday morning (especially as she is prone to the odd 'pop out' and knicker flash).

Missed Captain Scarlet, will 'tune in' for that next week.

I hear Gerry Anderson may get the Thunderbirds rights back.

Because the film bombed so much the studio want to get rid of the thing and Gerry has his sights on a new CGI series at sometime in the future.

I thought it was quite good and was surprised that they had a scene with a guy getting crushed in a crusher thing, Probably shows that they realise alot of people watching were fans of the original and not just kids if only the maker of that awful Thunderbirds film had the same idea.

I managed to catch it even though it wasnt quite on at the same time.
My only quibble this wek was the usual bad guy explains everything before carrying out his evil plan.
If the bomb could split the planet in two why set the timer for 6 minutes instead of just pushing the button and ending it all.

It's quite simple Shaz, he didn't really wnat to destroy the world, it was just a cry for help.

Post by: Bico on 19 February, 2005, 10:58:17 PM
More importantly, why did they go to all the trouble of trying to get the bomb's remote control back so they could turn the bomb off?
Apart from why the villian would even build in such a feature  to the remote in the first place, how did Scarlet know it was there?  And how come blowing up the remote turned the bomb timer off?  And how did Scarlet know that coming into contact with ice-cold water would cause the Russian super-tank to explode into a million, million pieces?  Only there's quite a bit of cold water in Siberia, and I'm beginning to formulate a theory as to why the Soviet Union collapsed...

Caught most of it, thought it was very watchable.

Is it just me or have those 'Angel' pilots had collogen (sp) implants, a bit too pouty.

Disapointed that Captain Scarlet didn't sound like Carry Grant.

Loved the vehicle designs.
Especially the Nort tank that the Russians had. All they had to do was sit there, unharmed from by any weapon Scarlet could throw at them, for 6 minutes, and the world would have exploded. But no, they had to chase him onto the ice, didn't they..?

Yeah, thought the vehicle designs were great.

CGI good all round, except for the mouth movements.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Dredd or Stronty Dog done like this.

Enjoyable though it was I thought some of the direction was a bit off... some of the dog-fighing was a bit confusing. And I could have done without the revolving strap-lines promoting competions and telling me the next part is on after the break.. Christ kids telly these days.

I finally managed to see this this morning and I *really* enjoyed it. My only small gripe was the English characters referring to Lieutenant Green as 'Loo-tenant' Green, which just sounded wrong to me.

*Definitely* going to try and see next week's, though. :)

Title: Re: Captain Scarlet - He is indest...
Post by: Wils on 26 February, 2005, 10:43:18 PM
There's nothing geeky about that at all. To me, it sounds as wrong as someone English saying "I'm gonna put the trashcan out on the sidewalk, you goddamn muthafucker" instead of "I'm putting the bin out on the path, you twat".

Apart from anything else, the American pronunciation makes it sound like they rent out toilets. ;)
