Title: This old thread is wearing a bit thin. . .
Post by: 2000AD Online on 14 May, 2002, 08:23:05 PM
Scojo,

you rightly bemoan the fact people have focused primarily on your dialogue, although I'm hardly surprised by this. Had a synopsis been provided then a better evaluation of plot and structure might have been forthcoming. If the dialogue is as bad as people think then it becomes all the more dificult to see beyond it, especially in something in which dialogue is so prevalent.

It's really quite inexcusable your not supplying a synopsis regardless of what you might think and say. How can those of us who aren't biased against you offer a fair opinion when you're not giving us a fair chance to do so in the first place?

Not that it matters now. Unfortunately, I think you've alienated a good few people who were more than prepared to give you a chance.

Which is a shame.

Right. Enough of all this cut and paste malarkey.

It's good to know that the anti-Scojo posse will just be able to ignore his posts with the killfile option, thus saving the rest of us from the arguments.

By the way, a synopsis would be great, and also try to actually format your script properly. And dialogue generally is clunky on the first draft.

But hey, as Mr Ford said to Mr Lucas, "George, you can write this shit, but you can't say it.", so there's hope yet. Good special effects and action can make up for dodgy dialogue. Just stay clear of the Mega City 1 equivalent of Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks.

Whit, I have pasted my reply to you here:
You seem to have posted your thread twice before!:)

Mrwhit,

At the risk or repeating myself, I don't agree with this "my dialogue is bad" line. Sorry, I really, really don't. If you read my "Watcher, why you are so wrong" thread, you can see why I do have some justification.

Maybe you would read that thread. Hand on heart, does Watcher's line sound better than mine?

Is it more threatening? Is the line better suited to the context of the scene?

Of course it isn't.

So as I say, this bad dialogue stuff really doesn't wash with me. Maybe some lines are expostional. I agree. But there has to be some in a dredd script. And Wagner DID the same in the first part of Sin City at the judge meeting. Read it again. See?

So if you lot are gonna condemn me, why not John as well?

So these criticisms are unfair.

With respect MrWhit, your synopsis point is invalid. Jason K wanted to read my script. He never asked for a synopsis. So I never wrote one.
So why put one up on the site?

Oh MrWhit, I think you just said it all:

"How can those of us who aren't biased against you offer a fair opinion..."

BIASED.

So the truth is out at last.

Thanks MrWhit for confirming what I thought all along.

Scojo:
Well done on your A grade for GCSE.
When you move on to A-Levels you'll find you can't get good marks for saying "biased" like you could at school.  Everyone is biased towards something.  Everyone has motives for everything.  You have to ask WHY is someone biased, and HOW RELEVANT the source is.

By the way - my last comment might just sound bitchy but that was actual advice given to me in my first lesson when I got to 6th form history class.  So it's not really a "look how childish Scojo is" insult but just passing on good advice that I have received.  (I..E..C..? Yup that's right.)  Any way what do I know, I got an N in my A-Level history because I was crap at revision & couldn't write decent essays to save my UCAS entry form.

Stomm!

A levels, GCE's (they added the "S" after I left), UCCA forms *yep , they added the "S" to that later too.

Brings back such sweet memories of a youth long departed.

sigh.
