What a boring load of crap. Apart from the preview of next weeks episode.
Starts off as looking like a crap spoof of current TV and then there is hope :-)

Bit of a mixed bag, that episode. Some great moments, especially with the Doctor and Margaret the Slitheen, but some really iffy bits with the "Whobie Gang" at the beginning.

Overall, it was pretty good fun, but not one of the best so far.

BTW - what a fucking spoiler! Why the reveal of the Daleks in the teaser? Still, good to see the buggers back! :-D

Righty-ho, then.

Fairly good, as a general character-exploring doohickey in the vibe of 'inside the spaceship' and the like. Was probably too appreciative for my own good over the first bit, even the bit where they all walk in unison to the Mayor's office, like some kind of trans-dimensional A-Team.

Bad Wolf reference - didn't everyone else think we were going to learn something important when the Doc clocked on the all the Bad Wolfery? Classy piece of 'wait-and-see' manoevering.

Next week's preview - was lookin' good, and I understand why they did it, but I was somewhat annoyed that a big mob of Daleks turned out not to be dead after all. Obviously, Daleks, like sex, sell, but I'd just rather've found out the normal way.

Yes, a lot of the speeches reminded me of this board funnily enough, but still an enjoyable episode in many ways.

Next week looked THE fucking business.

Now there won't be any long emotional whinging coversations with these bastards.

"Yes, a lot of the speeches reminded me of this board funnily enough"

???

Next week does look bloody great, though. I know there's been a lot of moaning about the TV refs, but it looks like it's going to be handled well, and the look of the various droids is nifty.

I do hope that we're not going to have a "it's all been a dream" moment about the previous episodes, and that "Bad Wolf" just turns out to be some kind of "time echo" hinting at the reappearance of the Daleks.

;)

hennyway loved the bad wolf big up.

The clincher was done very trad Dr who style. The bit where shes got them by the short and curlies, then the TARDIS protects itself!
The awareness of the timemachine and the Dr's relative awe of it.I like those small familiarities.
Nice to see the action centred at the heart of the TARDIS and if the whole story was there to swing it into this finale, I can forgive a Slitheen crying on the loo.

Don't mind me, just letting myself get annoyed by the slitheen.

I generally liked the Doctor a lot in this episode, and I even enjoyed his manic nonsense when he had the flashing headlight on, it really made me chuckle.

A shame Micky blubbed, he was doing quite well until then.
Title: Re: ...NEW WHO TONIGHT, EPISODE 11...
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 05 June, 2005, 02:11:59 AM
Ah, no worries. I'm actually quite fond of the Slitheen, daft though they may be. They're certainly far better new creatures than nearly anything from the McCoy years, and they are quite ghastly at heart (the speech from the Doctor about speaking with lips of a dead woman making this point nicely).

The headlight bit was good. Quite liked the staging of that moment, with the Doctor in the background, quite separate from the others & just chiming in. Made him seem more like an eccentric uncle, and that's how I've always seen the Doctor.

BTW - after having the Dalek reveal spoiled, I nipped over to the Outpost Gallifrey forums to have a nose around. There are some pics from the Sun posted there showing a fucking stunning shot of *thousands* of the bastards, lined up in what looks like a Dalek saucer. Very, very cool :-)

It's one of the beauties of CGI, you can probably just as easily show a 1000 of the buggers in formation as seven going up a corridor.

I liked those moments in the tardis as well.  I think you got a feeling he really was different to the others.

It wasn't overdone either.
Yet to see them stop off at an alien truckers cafe for asteroid dwelling glymph eggs and andromeda pulses in uranium ocean sponge sauce.

So there was a good balance of menace, scifi and good ol' brit desperation!

If this whole Bad Wolf plot line turns out to be Daleks afterall... Well, I won't be happy!

This episode was a bit up and down, with parts both good and bad. I liked the Doctor in it though...

I've got to say I injoyed this episode alot more then the preview from last week suggested,I would.I don't think they went too overboard with the farting and the dinner bit was great.
The next weeks looks good.I'm not to sure about the Anne Robinson robot, but the ending, even if it does spoil the surprize, looks fantastic. It would be great if Davros turns up at some .point

Oh, definitely - and with mechanical creatures like the Daleks, you can largely avoid the problems that you run into with organic creatures like, for example, the Slitheen.

"Feeling he was really different to the others" is exactly right. In some ways it reminded me of the ending of "The Green Death", with Pertwee's Doctor leaving quietly and setting off on his own.

"Is it a cliffhanger episode 12-13?"

Episodes 12-13 are two parts of one large episode, so I expect there will be some kind of a cliffhanger between the two. There's also some speculation that there will be a cliffhanger of sorts at the end of episode 13, leaving viewers waiting to see what happens in the Christmas special...

The Fear Factor section should answers a few questions, parent boarders may have had concerning children watching the show.

Found it more enjoyable than the components suggested i would - the return of Mickey and Slitheen worked a lot better here than their preivious appearance would have suggested... convinces me even more that the direction of the first block was squiffy.

Eccleston has definitely improved as hes gone on, but  still feel hes uncomfortable with the sci-fi elements of the show.  He'll put great emotion into an..erm.. emotional speech, but he still seems slightly embarassed when talking about time rifts and the end of the world..

Nicely convenient get out for the Doctor at the end there, though!

Watcher --

IIRC, the Aliens of London / World War Three two-parter was the first of the new series to be filmed. Perhaps that had something to do with the uneven nature of that particular story?

BTW, the Bad Wolf (http://www.badwolf.org.uk) sites have both been updated after tonight's episode. No new updates on the UNIT, Geocomtex or official Beeb sites yet...

Ooooooh, don't get me started on Ace in Curse of Fenric - that story did funny things to the 10-year-old version of me ...

Next you'll be telling me you *liked* that moment where Ace "seduces" the guard!

Well, the dialogue, even to the aforementioned 10-year-old, made NO sense whatsoever. But then the scene on the roof of the church more than made up for any clunky lines ;P

;-)

BTW - for anyone fortunate enough to have missed the aforementioned crap seduction dialogue, here's a taster:

Ace - Have to move faster than that if you want to keep up with me. Faster than light.

Guard - Faster than a second hand on a watch?

Ace - We're hardly moving yet. Sometimes I travel so fast I don't exist.

???

Hah, well, it doesn't work in written form. You have to be there to witness the look of pure amazement on this guy's face when he asks if she moves "faster than the second hand on a watch."

Pure-bloody-Shakespeare.

Heretic! I have NEVER hidden my love of the Aldred! ;P

Back on-original-tpopic, I'd like to place on record how much I actually liked this episode. So far, RTD's episodes have been a bit of a damp squib - nice dialogue but with little or no plot. Despite being slightly wary because of the comments on this thread (I can't resist a spoiler) I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday's episode. For the first time I think RTD developed a great balance between the characters, the plot and the comedy moments. Mickey actually became a bit more of a rounded character, rather than just useless. The suggestion that they'd been to places in between episodes was very welcome - as were the mentions of Who history with the TARDIS (and, I feel, quashing the claim that the new series is meant to 'ignore' the old) and I thought a great relationship has been struck with the three crew members. I like the fact RTD laid off the fart jokes for once, and the performance from the Slitheen major (I've met one or two majors who would qualify) was actually quite touching. Favourite bit though has to be when the Doc kept messing with her matter transporter ... is there anything a sonic screwdriver CAN'T do?!?!? ;)

Daleks in next episode = good.
Basing entire episode on pop culture references = bad.

Is Cardiff going to be inundated with location-spotting Dr Who tourists this summer?

For anyone who wants to know, the waterfront and restaurant scenes were filmed only a few hundred yards from the Millennium Centre. The plaza outside the Centre is entirely covered with wooden slats, which made it a bit strange when it started splitting like concrete in the episode. Maybe the CGI experts were working from incomplete information.

The boardroom where they had the power plant unveiling, the Mayor's office and the delightfully tiled ladies lavatory were all in one of the buildings of Cardiff University. The gents' lavatory in the foyer of the same building is almost identical but a mirror image, and with urinals. Notice that the portraits in the Mayor's rooms are of former Vice Principals of the University (Mayors don't usually sit for portraits wearing orange academic robes).

I, too, thought that spoiler at the end was a bit stupid. They only did that to convince waverers in the audience to watch next week, and tell their friends to watch it. As I said to my partner "I hope they don't appear just in the last 5 minutes of next week's episode after giving that away."

Didn't like this ep as much as the previous one. Agree that mickey actually came across as a character for a change, but the whole resolution of the episode was complete bollocks.

Plus - a space skateboarding alien? Is that what the Silver surfer started on?

Ah yes, that future! The one where academia is the path of choice for provincial politicians and wood breaks up just like concrete.

I've seen it dozens of times. Thanks for anchoring me firmly in reality, Paul.

That room that stood in for the Mayor's office is very nice, by the way. It's in almost constant daily use for meetings, seminars and get-togethers with wine and tortilla chips.

Didn't they use that wooden planking that's as strong as concrete, but also prone to mimic it whilst cracking, for the plaza bit outside the Millenium centre?

It was on Tomorrows World.

Clever stuff.

I'll have to agree with LMS on this one. I thought this was certainly RTD's best episode to date, and certainly one of my favourties so far.
RTD thoroughly indulged himself in awkward issue based tension which was a refreshing change from his previous camp "Carry On Up The Doctor" adventure that was Aliens of London.
The hitherto rarely explored idea of *why* it is that the Doc leaves and is unable to deal with all the consequences of his actions was an inciteful angle, as was the exploration of the kind of stress of flying about all over the universe places on relationships; positve and negative. I loved the way that the TARDIS gang were portrayed, with a not too cheesey but easily identifiable companionship and that Mickey seems to be building up a real and potentially nasty resentment to Roses' opportunities and adventures. The Mayor is agreeably a wonderful actress in this ep.
My particular favourite was the Doctor defeating each of the Slitheens defence mechanisms (breath spray.. fantatstic)and of course The Bad Wolf reference.

As for next week... Let's not get too carried away by the spoiler, I'm a bit wary myself of relying on the pop culture refs, but then if Id've judged this weeks episode on the strength of the spoiler I would never have watched it and subsequently would've been gutted.

:)

Anyone else think this is stupid...the restaurant the Dr and the Mayor had their meal in, Bistro 10, decided to change it's name about a month before the program aired.  I would have a waited a bit.  It's now an Italian restaurant.
Title: Re: ...NEW WHO TONIGHT, EPISODE 11...
Post by: House of Usher on 07 June, 2005, 05:10:37 PM
Ah, but if the restaurant changed hands, it's a marketing opportunity missed by the previous owners (who didn't hang onto the premises long enough to cash in), not the new ones, who didn't necessarily have the option of keeping the old name.
