Title: Rogue trooper and other questions.
Post by: JimBob on 15 May, 2002, 05:36:11 PM
Something which has been bugging me recently. I remember a crap 1980's cartoon with a villains hench man who was basically a mauve Rogue Trooper. Anyone out their able to tell me what the show is?
aAnd on the subject of rubbish I watched when hopped up on Kia-ora was their some jap puppet show about space ships and flying robots in the early 80's? No one seems to remember this but it's really stuck in my head, it was possibly called Space Fleet? I'm fairly sure the villain changed sex for some reason though this may be the tartazine talking. Back then i was banned from the too rough 2000 Ad and weaned on the Eagle. Any one know of any web sites for the 80's photo story "classic",particularly Doomlord? And has Eric Bradbury ever worked on 2000 Ad? Used to love hte strips he drew in Eagle.
Apologise form the rambling, I'm working nights at the moment and the insomnia is killing me.

Ah Doomlord... where art thou?

Yeah, Eric Bradbury did a few of the Tharg stoties and some other bits and pieces.  Alas he is no longer with us.

The original caption to this was "Squeal like a human City Boy."

I remember this! The Dictators of Zrag had their 'niff-giver' guns or something that fired smell at people. The funny thing is, I heard that the police are developing a riot gun that fires smell at people too - you shoot a group of rioters with it and they all smell so bad that they run away from each other. Classic.

I'd want one.

The puppet show was Star Fleet, a manga style 'Thunderbirds' that used rods rather than strings. There is a great website with some footage from the show, type Star Fleet into google and skim through about 3 pages of Star Trek crap and you'll find it.

In fact, here's the link.

Yay. On Doomlord my Dad used to roll his eyes in the back of his head like Doomlords victims and say he was going to suck my brains out. And my girlfriend wonders why I'm weird.

That Commander Makara was such a babe.

Anyway, having a memory like a whutsit, I've forgotten the name of the first artist who drew Doomlord. Italian chap, IIRC. Did the Deathlords in a non-Debbie way.

Ah Star Fleet - fantastic stuff - I remember watching everyt episode (Saturday mornings) but missed the very last episode (had to go shopping for my mum!)

If I remember correctly a large space ship thing was heading towards earth to invade / destory it - damn I've never found out how it ended, I'm heading straight over on the link :)

Staaaaaaar Fleet de de de de de de  - was the theme choon!!

Battle of the Planets anyone?

mmmh so they don't sing "Staaaaaaaar Fleet" in the credits - must be my failing memory.

Excellent site Jacob! BTW - have I seen x-bomber somewhere else - did a bloke in an x-bomber costume feature in a beastie boys video? The one with beasties dressed up in white?

The search for merchandise starts today!

Battle of The Planets. Cannae wait for the comic book that's coming out soon.

Must admit I didn't know till last year that Battle of The Planets was a heavily edited manga series.

Greetings one and all.  Glad you're enjoying SFXB - say hello to the webmaster!  Funnily enough I was nosing round the other night trying to figure out which issue Johnny Alpha died in - turns out I didn't quite have it in my collection!

To answer some queries - the lyrics version of the theme tune is on the closing credits, not the intro which is why you may have missed them but still know them.  There's a full episode, in fairly low quality, on the site at the moment.  Battle of the Planets, particularly the version we see with 7 Zark 7 is a seriously butchered version of the original Gatchaman series.  Some discussion of BOTP on my site's forum, along with Terrahawks and the like.  Feel free to drop by.

Oh, and finally - in another of life's little coincidences, I once played Alien War / Laser Quest with the 2000 AD team having won a competition in Comics International, mid 1990s.  I came across my 2000 AD badge when I was digging through some stuff last night.  S'funny old world!

Great site, I'm kind of pleased to see I had the good taste to prefer this to Terra Hawks, specially as my taste back then was seriously odd; prefering Eagle to 2000 Ad, the Action Force inserts being my favourite part of Battle. Looks like I got my choice of militaristic puppets right though.

Do you mean the 'Intergalactic' video? I thought that this was just a rip off of old Godzilla type movies and of that Power Rangers nonsense - The big red X robot from Star Fleet was probably inspired by all the old cheesy Japanese monster/sci-fi flicks.

Dai X actually IS one of those cheesy Japanese monsters!  He was designed by Go Nagai who's famous for coming up with manga's concept of human controlled mecha and is responsible for various anime series like Devilman.  Star Fleet is actually a dubbed and slightly edited version of X Bomber, which was the show's name in Japan.  More details on the site...  Brian May used Dai X for one of the sleeves of the various releases of his Star Fleet theme cover, incidentally.
