Title: Decent Vids I've watched recently.
Post by: paulvonscott on 11 June, 2005, 04:16:41 PM
Creep is a good british horror movie (with a lovely German in the leed role), got a bit too horrible for me at one or two points (you'll know).

Garden State was a mix of nice romantic comedy with a return to a dark suburban landscape.  Written, directed and starred in by that kid from scrubs.  Unbelievable.

Finally got around to watching the Bourne Identity.  I'm not a big fan of thrillers, but this had the same woman in from creep, and run loa run, Franka Potente (I'm no stalker, but it may be time for Mila and Juliette to move down a couple of notches on the shrine) and overall a sort of Luc Besson enjoyable violence vibe.  Must watch the sequal now.

For dumb, by the numbers, but still providing some real laughs I saw Dodgeball.  The alternative ending (and commentary) really made me laugh.  Ah, best dvd extra, almost.

All these were recommended to me, as all the movies I picked were utter rubbish.  So if anyone else has any recomendations of good movies, why not post them here.

Mad Max 1.

Don't you think having built a shrine to female actors in your living room might be a bit of a turn off for prospective women?

If there are any prospective women, I tell them the shrine is the entrance to an ancient gold mine, haunted by the curse of the mighty chomwanowac, who gold plated his temple city in 804 AD.

And much as I like Mad Max, I've seen em, though I think the time may be approaching for a watchathon in the upcoming year. I'm surprised there's never been any special edition DVD's.

Was it the Max part or the Mad part that got you interested?

Franka Potente, um, doesn't feature much in the sequel.

I watched Dodgeball on an overnight flight to South Africa a couple of months ago. Got some nasty looks for laughing out loud in a plane full of tired grumpy people trying to sleep.

Way of The Gun is seconded.  Cracking crime thriller/modern day western crossover type thing. I recommend it heartily to everyone I see.

I warn them that it starts with a bout of ridiculously good swearing and cleverly point out the Butch and Sundance references*

*(that I've read about - I'm too thick to spot these things myself).

I have of late found Jim Carey hard to watch but Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind was a really welcome diversion.

A slightly more plausible back story to it than that other Charlie Kaufman film, Being John Malkovich,

little SPOILer-

It's a love story set in a world where people can pay to have other people (or pets in one instance) erased from their memories.

The sparing use of overtly Blockbuster CGI combined with some retro, low-fi camera trickery made this a pleasant change to all the
heavily effects laden movies I,ve sat through recently.

Better than Gattaca at 7.385 out of 10.. :)

Theres probably an awful lot of effects work going on in there that you're not seeing - Gondrys very good at using it in a subtly to great effect. If you ever get the chance check out his music video work, it's stunning.

++ Theres probably an awful lot of effects work going on in there that you're not seeing ++

S'pose that's what I meant by the CGI not being obviously In-yer-face-Hollywood like Constantine or ROTS, apart from perhaps when

*SPOILerette*

Clementine's VW disappears / dismantles itself or when the beach house collapses..

I think you become aware of subtler effects on a second or third viewing.

Who has Gondrys made video clips for?

I recently enjoyed watching the DVD of Nightmare Man (BBC, 1981) starring Celia Imrie, so much so that I even started a thread about it in case anyone else had seen in. I think Smiley had.

And I have just watched 'Saw', which was not at all bad, although I have to say it was a bit gruesome. There really is nothing worse than abduction and torture (brrrr!).

I watched the first hour of the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre last night, and found it decidedly unpleasant and quite anxiety-provoking. My heart rate still hadn't returned to normal a full hour after turning it off, and I only shook off my agitation properly when I ran myself a nice hot bath.

This morning I'm anxious again, which may or may not be to do with being unsettled by the film last night. I will watch the rest of the film another day, and I'm sure I'll find it just as disturbing an experience.

Nurse! Bring me my medication, please!
