Title: Dredd movie blah
Post by: Trough on 17 May, 2002, 06:10:49 AM
Hello!

Trough here again, after seemingly months of trawling through rants about Scojo's script.

Hmm!  All this blah about Dredd casting reminds me of the old "should-Joanna-Lumley-play-the-next-Doctor" kerfuffle amongst Who fans.  In the end, she wasn't bad, but Hugh Grant was much better.

I think Mr Perlman would be quite a good choice, as it goes.  Or maybe Kurt Russell (as Dredd, that is, not the Doctor.  Then again... er, no).

Personally, I have little faith in these films getting made.  Surely potential backers will simply remember the Stallone movie and laugh?  Let's face it, if someone came to you and asked you to back their remake of Waterworld (different misadventure, same year), would you take them seriously?  Comic and console game sales aside, there can't be an obvious profit to be made.  Can there?

Give it another five-10 years to forget about the Stallone horror, and then we might have a viable franchise.

In the meantime, surely the real focus should be on other 2K properties, like Stronty Dog (I was going to refer to him as Mr Dog, but that's dog food - or should it be Caesar?  James Mason anyone?).

Waterworld doesn`t have years of good progs behind it.  Just Mad Max and Kevin Costner`s egomania.
  Joanna Lumley for Dredd!

That's the problem with the Meg - you'll need huge budgets to get it looking lifelike.  Any the big money film makers usually just spin out dross (like the Sly movie).

WHY DON'T THEY JUST GIVE THE BUTTON MAN TRILOGY TO FILM FOUR?

That'd be blummin' brilliant!

Now Button Man - THERE'S a potentially cracking franchise.  Hear hear.

Mr K, you're right about Dredd having years of good progs behind it, but the fact is, no-one really knows what it is.  The other comic characters that have been filmed are more than just comics - they're effectively cultural icons that people recognise instantly, even if they're not comic readers.

Sadly, Dredd doesn't elicit that kind of popular awareness.  Therefore your average backer isn't going to pour funds into something that isn't a dead-cert profit-winner.

I agree with Mr Dead Oddboygirl (sorry to hear about your sad demise by the way), in that a proper Dredd movie will probably demand a shedload of investment before we even get around to casting.

Trough, making annoyingly loud clicking noises by toying with his abacus

PS:  Joanna Lumley gets my vote as Dredd, with David McCallum as Judge Death and Gareth Hunt as Hershey.

Hmm.  I have finally gone completely insane.

Lifelike, the mega city streets just looked like a dark studio.  Where did all the money go?

Maybe if we ask George Lucas ever so nicely he'll let us have any unused footage of the CGI city that Epissedoff Two opened with.

So long as we don't get him to do the story or script...

Re James Mason ... does the following mean anything to you....

"oh look over there is it a badger with a machine gun"

"hairnets and dogfood"

"the uzi's got more firepower than a banjo but your f**ked if you try picking out a tune on the uzi"
