Well, this week I've watched all five Dirty Harry movies, and apart from feeling a bit ill, and suddenly becoming a lot more right wing, gaining the belief that a punks rights includes only the right to be shot, it's been an interesting experience.
I love the first movie, the second is pretty good, the third one is okay but has some terrible cartoon punks in. The other two eighties movies are, well, shining examples of 80's action movies - high cheeseball, with extra sauce.
Obviously Harry is probably the major influence on Judge Dredd. But Dredd fills his own boots well enough.
Harry is also told in the first two movies that he's not supposed to be Judge, Jury and Executioner.
Oh and the first one was written by two Finks. R.M. Fink and Harry Julian Fink. They might have been brothers, but off the poster R.M. was also called Rita. Either way possibly an inspiration for our favourite family of fiends.
There are elements in the stories that might have inspired Dredd stories, it's hard to be sure I guess.
My favourite actor across the movies (apart from Clint) is Albert Popwell. From his biog it looks like he was one of the blaxploitation stars. He played the unlucky bank robber at the start of the first movie, JJ Wilson in Magnum Force, Mustapha in The Enforcer and Horace King in Sudden Impact. He was also in Coogan's Bluff, but not The Dead Pool alas. He sadly passed away in 1999.
Anyway, if anyone wants to brave them all, really I'd only reccommend the first three without heavy anaesthetic. Sudden Impact, directed by Clint is a hysterical embarresment, where everyone is directed as if they are clint eastwood. I actually nearly laughed at several of the overly dramatic scenes. Still, he's upped his game since.
The Dead Pool... urgh. Nice idea with the remote control car chase, but how can anyone drive at speed through a city and control a remote control car at the same time? And are you telling me that Clint can't outrace a battery driven car?
I too collect the above films Paul. My favourite opening scenes are from Magnum Force and the brilliant *Dirty Harry!
*The opening sequence of a new unknown charactor as the titles roll and the excellent drum/jazz riffing is a complete tidal-wave of talent. No dialogue no big bursting out onto the screen.Very smoothly done. The cartridge pick up with an underwhelming pen manouvre and this is all we have to go on that this man is the lead role.Par-excellance.
Treated a few guests to Dirty Harry on the weekend.A real end-of-party pleaser.
The Dead Pool - Jim Carrey and Lim Neeson, no?
"The Dead Pool - Jim Carrey and Lim Neeson, no? "
Yes?
Lol - the attack of the killer-toys. It truly was a sad ending for a great series.
SUDDEN IMPACT is a terrible movie, the story is by the numbers and a lot of the scenes don?t work. It hadn?t the uncomfortable deadpan seriousness of the the first three. I still like it though. "Make my day" has taken over "Do you feel lucky, punk?"
But I think they should have stopped after the first three.
Who did Jim Carrey play? I didn't even notice him.
He plays the rock dood at the beginnig who o.d.'s in his trailer. Check him out. Its bizarre I tell you.
Oh, really?
He DID look like a twat now I come to think of it.
I used to think that.
Or something like I see they've got some twat no-hoper so's not to overwhelm Clints star-facade.
I bet Carrey creamed his pants for the part, though.
I too am much liking Dirty Harry. It's got a bleak, nihilistic feel to it is awesome to behold. Surely they must have done it as a one off then thought better of it. The second one comes across well due to Clint's role reversal from vigilante to vigilante hunter. After that, there's the aforementioned sharp drop off.
It can only be a matter of time before a remake is in the offing. This can only be bad thing. I mean did you see what they did to Assault on Precinct 13?
I mean did you see what they did to Assault on Precinct 13?
No. And I don't intend to. I keep seeing copies of 'Assault on Precinct 13' dvd in shops and it is always this shitty remake. Why, oh why?
Funny, isn't it. I'll bet that the remake, which is still in the process of paying for itself, will cost about ?7.99. The original - made for far less money and with the costs now covered - will be on the shelves for ?17.99, or something.
Bah!
Go to 'Fopp'. If you've got one nearby. Here in Cardiff I got M (Fritz Lang), Brazil (Terry Gilliam) and Dark Star (John Carpenter) for ?17.
I hear Fopp is near me and has some darned good stuff on its shelves.
It can only be a matter of time before a remake is in the offing.
That would call for vigilante street justice.

Van Diesel IS 'Dirty' Harry Callaghan!
I love the "Harry" movies and the DVD box set is an essential part of my collection, I think I prefer the second movie "Magnum Force" over "Dirty Harry" itself, the third "The Enforcer" was really the last of the good Harry flicks, "Impact" and "Pool" still provide plenty of mayhem and nonsence, Clint is da man!
Some fave "Harryisms":
"nothing wrong with shooting, just as long as the right people get shot"
--------------
Callahan
"When an adult male is chasing a female with intent to commit rape I shoot the bastard. That's my policy"
Mayor
"Intent? How did you establish that?"
Callahan
"When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher's knife and a hard on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross"
--------------
"Tell you something, if everyone here could shoot as good I wouldn't care if the whole damn department was queer"
--------------
"a a bomb?" "here would you like to hold it"
--------------
Callahan
"Here's a seven point suppository"
Capt McKay "What do you mean?"
"Callahan: I mean stick it up your ass"
And The Enforcer was directed by.... James "Fargo" :-0
Ed
"Hey that guys peeping in on Hot Mary and her boyfriend"
hawhaw:)
"Van Diesel IS 'Dirty' Harry Callaghan!"
Well, that'd be better than Jude Law. Who it will be.
(It ought to be Ron Perlman. But then, he should be in every film. Alongside Rutger Hauer. Who is.)
