Title: The Final Programme
Post by: Mudcrab on 17 May, 2002, 09:22:40 PM
Nope, nothing to do with the last issue of tooth. I got this film on video after years of searching. It's a film of the Michael Moorcock book of the same name, the first Jerry Cornelius book. Anyone seen it? Anyway, very bizarre film but there's one bit in a bar where there are people in big inflatable balls bouncing around a 'people size' pinball table. Wey hey I thought, it's Pin-Boing!!! Which was in the Meg VERY recently. Certainly wasn't copying Boing, cos the film was made in 1972. I also thought that Jerry's needle gun looked a bit like a Lawgiver, then I told myself to stop seeing 2000ad related things everywhere and seek some professional help!

I've been looking for that for ages.

Didn't realise you could still get it.

Is it worth looking for any longer? As in, is it actually any good? And does the guy they have playing Jerry makethe grade?

I eventually got it on ebay from the states. It's NTSC so I've had to watch it at a mates house, as most newer TV's can show NTSC. Just makes it B&W on a normal telly.

I thought it was pretty good overall. It's got the same feel as the book and seems to stay pretty close to the story, although I've been meaning to read it again to see how close. It keeps you fascinated to see what the hell's going on anyway, which is how I remember the book. It's easy to spot the Elric parallels (Frank keeping Catherine in a 'sorcerous' sleep and Frank/Jerry's needle guns being the 2 black swords). Jon Finch is pretty good as Cornelius, looks very like Jim Morrison, but then that was a common look at the time. His attitude though, is pretty much like Jerry. There's quite a few good bits and on the whole it's better than I'd imagined, the only thing letting it down is the 'cheapness' of it, but as it's from the 70's thats not surprising. A few silly bits that are just on the borderline of being crap and hilarious at the same time. I've watched it twice now and enjoyed it more the second time so in conclusion I'd say it's well worth it if you're a Moorcock fan, even just out of interest. The closest thing to it I can think of would be Barbarella for the silliness of it, but not nearly 'as silly' if you know what I mean.

Hope that helped!

It's great for such lines as

"Nah, I'm thinking of getting rid of the old house. Yeah, blow it all up. Napalm I think"

I'm not sure what I think of the ending. It's the same as the book but somewhat different IIRC, but it is funny.

This is a FANTASTIC movie.  I was so thrilled when I got it.  I taped it off a mate who'd taped it of tv.

One of my ALL TIME FAVOURITE MOVIES, this has to be seen to be believed.  It's just so great.  This is definitely one to get on DVD if it ever surfaces.  A genuinely strange movie which captures the feel of Jerry Cornelius perfectly.

ALL TIME CLASSIC!

Now I'm going to get my needle gun and run amok.

Cheers!

i remember staying up until 2 oclock in the morning to watch it on telly when i was about 14 or 15.

the only things that stayed in my mind were my disappointment in how scanty the nudity was & being unconvinced by the ape costume at the end. as i said, i was 14 or 15 at the time, & i remember having similar reservations about carry on emmanuelle (except for the bit about the ape suit, i hastily add), which i recently saw again & had a bit of a knowing chuckle over.

>my disappointment in how scanty the nudity was

quite possibly this line should read "...my disappointment in how scant the nudity was..."

love to see the final programme again now, however.
