I cheated on the cube, but got the RPG quite quickly...thank goodnes as the office had ground to a hault.

but what exactly am I supposed to be doing ? what's the point of the games ? and how do I know if i've done it or not ?

OK, the basic premise for all three GROWs is to add each item from the side menus in the right order, so as to "evolve" the sphere/cube/tiny fantasy kingdom.
You'll know when you've done it, because it'll do... stuff. Honest - you'll know it when you see it.
Well that's just it - the first two appear to have an apparent narrative logic, the sphere is abstract trial and error..
Struggling with Vanilla now. Annoying tree growing game.
Best so far is a pitiful 7.5ft!
nearly four hours later, had to cheat !! stupid cube was sending me mad......
now for the RPG !!

Fascinating...........I await the movie(starring Scarlet Johanssen, Liv Tyler, Angelina Jolie and Bruce Willis) with eager anticipation.
