The best tip I know is - buy it second hand, from the back pages of one of the numerous specialist publications out there (I hear Peeping Digest is particularly good).

I got a cheapo from TKMax...it's not bad, the moon is big and it's quite interesting.  I'd go 2nd hand if you want to spend a couple of quid though as you might find it easier to sell it on without a loss if you get bored.

If I remember correctly from my star gazing days if you get a reflector telescope it needs to have a mirror size of at least 4 inches to get a quality image.

A refractor telescope I think needs to have a lens size of about 60mm or so.

The bigger the better.

Very often a good pair of binoculars will suit better than forking out for a telescope, and again the bigger the lens the better (it lets in more light so you then get a better, clearer image, or something like that).

I have a Tasco telescope I was about to Ebay, buyer collects.

Tasco 302911. Girlfriend fed up of it collecting dust.

Any serious offer considered. Any silly ones laughed at.
