As i understand it these are "legal" because the site is hosted in Warezistan, where IP laws do not exist. Whether that's truly the same as being actually "legal" is subject to some debate. It's certainly not anymore ethical than grabbing the files off of your favorite P2P service for free.

This site is no different from buying pirated software from China. If you don't care about piracy, that's fine, but no-one should delude themself that Allofmp3 is anything other than illegal. The record label owners I know are certainly not happy with that site, seeing as they don't see anything at all from it.

Poor, starving executives.  Someone should think of their suffering.
No-one should have to go through life with only three pool boys.

It's based in Russia, whose antiquated IP laws can't deal with this kind of website. Either that or the authorities there just don't care. Well, it's a bit of both, I guess.

Not all record label owners are massively rich, dude. The one I know lives very modestly in London, living from month to month. People using the likes of Allofmp3 as some kind of anti-establishment protest (well, claiming to) should bear in mind that it hurts indie labels and artists as much as majors.

Define the word "Free" again?

Congratulations,
Your account (mr****) has been created.

You will receive a confirmation e-mail at mr****@hotmail.com shortly.
To download music from our catalog at less than $0.20 per average track, please prepay your balance.
The minumum payment of $10 will let you download about 10 full albums or more than 100 songs.
(More precisely, you will be charged $0.02, only two cents of a US dollar, for each Megabyte of downloaded music.)

Also, considering you pay a charge for this thing, it's somewhat dodgier than using P2P stuff. After all, that's sharing and without getting into the whole debate, it's better than funding Grud-Knows-What over in Sov City.

I'd like to point out that most music I've ever downloaded 'illegally' has been stuff I already have on vinyl, plus just the odd thing to try out. I'd use iTunes but I think it's overpriced for something when you have no tangible (quality) product at the end of the day. Haven't used P2P for music since Napster though. MP3.com used to be good for raking about to find unknown stuff, but now it's been taken over by the big boys and it sucks.

And precisely zero of which will ever make its way back to the artists.

If anyone wants to send me all their credit card details, I'll send them back some free songs. Probably.
