Title: Half Life 2
Post by: petesbeats on 30 November, 2005, 01:04:58 AM
Just got this for the Xbox on saturday and spent a few hours on it.  Like a lot.  Turned it on last night though and forgot to save it on Saturday and have to do the first 3 hours gameplay all over again.  Bastid!

What do you think of the game?

I think it's superb, though to be honest it I think it peaks at the second driving section.

Have you been into Ravenholm?

Excellent game. Finished the PC version last Xmas, and I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the Lost Coast.

My PC mostly meets the minimum spec (just), but my pitiful 1.4Ghz CPU just isn't up to it.
Let's see what Santa Claus drops when I belt him with my crowbar, eh?

Art - XboX deals in the UK are great at the minute...some real bargains to be had...is it the same in the US?

I kind of meant the 360 - which is pretty rare at the moment.

I'd hold off for a while on the 360, tbh. I hear they've got an overheating problem at the mo that causes them to crash a lot.

Yeah, as per all these consoles I;m anticipating that in a few months time they'll cost $100 less and have all the teething issues rsolved. Still, if I had the money in my pocket and saw one in the store I'd probably buy it.

With the same amount of money as the cost of a 360, you'd probably be able to dramatically upgrade your PC, or even buy a completely new base unit.

As is the norm with me, I'm in no hurry at all to get any next gen consoles (I've only had a PS2 for the last year), but one thing I *am* eyeing up is the Game Boy Micro.

Back on topic, I played Half-Life 2 a few weeks ago and thought it was great; Ravenholm being one part that *really* sticks in my mind. :)

Any game where you get the ability to pick up circular saw blades and fire them at zombies -cutting them in half - wins a special place in my heart.

And the poison-crab carrying zombies freak me right out.

Wils -- I've got a Japanese GBA Micro in the red & gold Famicom colours. It's a gorgeous little piece of kit, and the screen is stunningly bright & sharp.

The big caveat is that the Nintendo DS can also play all GBA games, and has a growing library of bloody great games. Buy the Micro if you really just want a gorgeous little handheld for playing some great GBA games. If you're after games, Wi-Fi Mario Kart and touch-screen fun, buy the DS.

The 360 launch has been... interesting. What I've found surprising is that so far Microsoft aren't shouting about sales figures - usually a bad sign when it comes to a console launch. The issues over crashes & other faults have perhaps been a touch overblown, but it does appear that a significant number of launch units have some problems - possibly caused by an overheating PSU.

Even if I wanted one - and I've seen nothing that interests me about it so far - I wouldn't be touching it with a bargepole for a good few months yet. It's too damn expensive to be an early adopter, and judging by the reports of faults and duff launch games, not really worth the money yet.

Eventually, I can see us getting both, tbh (the DS for Malchi, the Micro for me) although I *would've* liked the Micro to support older GB games as well, as there are some great mono puzzly games that you'll never see made as Advance ones (Amazing Tater, for example).

I'm getting a 360 on friday(probably), my Dixons manager has my name on one for me! The cost doesn't bother me cos I just got a massive bonus and cashed in some shares so i'm feeling flush at the moment.

I'm also a sucker for launch day stuff.

And PDO looks like it might turn out ok after all.

I think a lot of these overheating problems are down to the user in the end. I assume most of us have seen the size of the 360's external psu. Something that size is going to need some serious room to breathe and my guess is that lots of the people suffering problems will be the ones who just stuffed it down the back of the TV.

I'd be suprised if the actual numbers of "faulty" units actually exceeded what are considered acceptable levels by console manufacturers.

Wils --

Well, the price is likely set to drop on the DS in the next few months & I'd definitely recommend it when it does. I was a bit disappointed to note that the Micro didn't support older GB titles, but I suppose the remodelling comes at a price. I'm going to pick up one of the new GBA SPs at some point - the models with the new, brighter screen - so I can start trawling through the GB/GBColour back catalogue.

James --

I've seen mixed reviews of PD0 but, given that many people were forced to review from early, buggy code because it was being worked on right to the last minute, it's difficult to know how much was improved for the release version. The Edge review hit on something that puts me off - namely, that the single-player mode is fairly light and not particularly well designed. While I enjoy multiplayer gaming, I still get the most out of the single-player modes - and the original PD had a pretty strong single-player campaign - so I can't see a game slanted in favour of multiplayer being my thing.

Megadeth --

Well, there is that to consider. However, this is supposed to be a home console, not a piece of delicate lab equipment. It should be able to cope with a certain level of mistreatment/misuse without fritzing, and I would hope that the engineers would have taken that into consideration.

I suspect the old saw about never buying the first version of any piece of hardware is accurate enough - it's the version the marketing department want out, not the version the engineers are happy with.

Reading what some owners of the 360 are having problems with, it appears that the power supply *is* the problem, it being that it doesn't like being put on the carpet.

Gamecubes seemed to suffer the same problem when they were released as well.
It could be some kind of static build-up maybe - my 'cube will die fairly quickly if it's directly on carpet without appearing to get too hot.

Amstor- As much as I like Edge I have decided they are a bit hardcore in their attitude sometimes. I'm in it for the enjoyment factor and I have found in the past that the games they rate very highly are the ones that you need to totally engross yourself in for months at a time to get the best out of. I've come to appreciate that an "EDGE 7" usually works for me.

Sure I can notice the poor points in bad game design and the shocking laziness of some developers/publishers banging out any old crap, but if I enjoy it then i'm gonna enjoy it.

I'll be sure to post a gloating thread here on saturday. If I get the machine that is.
